There are no more options to pick ATi 4870s for the C2D m17x setup except for Nvidia 260m/280m's cards.
The ATi 4870s are available for m17x-R2 though.
I'm forseeing the Ati 5870s coming in Feb. (still dreaming)
This is for U.S.A. website

I think they just ran out of the allocation they had for the M17X R1. They will discontinue the M17X R1 soon.
-
R1 should've been pulled the moment R2 became available. I think it's dishonest of Dell to be selling a known defective product.
-
I'm sure there is a high volume of orders for the M17x-R2 so they're holding the GPU's for them. I can't imagine they'd keep the M17x-R1 around for too much longer anyway. Maybe they'll drop the price on it one more time.
-
x 2
I also think Dell should replace all the M17x-R1 with the R2 -
I dont understand whats up with the Dell website changing the options list all the time..
On their UK&Europe sites both, the only GPU option present is a single 4870..(not that you can call one choice an option...)
What happens to the people that place an order for i7+single ati..then see the website shows dual Ati available a week or so after theyve placed their order? -
they get screwed
-
yea they get screwed..
whats best is that in some countries where alienwares arent exactly popular(like my country singapore) the new options take so damn long to appear or they dont appear at all.
like for singapore, the ati 4870 arent even available here yet and the R2 isnt even heard of. even the tech stuff dont know theres a 4870 option for the r1 and they dont even know the existance of the R2. -
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
Thats Dell for ya. I bet all the sales rep take orders with scripts in hand. If it is not in the script, it's not available..lol -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
The R1 is definitely going away soon, you cant even see your lack of optical drive options, now a DVD drive is just "also included" lol

Youre dreaming my dream... -
some body is dropping Nvidia ....
/ well one can hope :/ -
The cards are already there, the question is whether or not they will be supported... And how fast will Dell react this time...
-
Kade Storm The Devil's Advocate
The UK website pulled the R1 the moment R2 was avaialabe. We're only offered the new i7 models with the Radeons, and from what I heard recently, even they had a shortage of crossfire cards so only single 4870s were availabe for build.
-
Same here in France, once they released R2 only the i7 procs and 4870s have been available. Dual cards were only available for about 2-3 days online so I had to call in my order to get the crossfire.
-
You don't think they'd drop Nvidia all together do you?
-
This is a message for all people outside U.S....
If the option is not in your country's website, just phone Dell, all options (tech. upgrades) can be ordered by phone. Also you can get a better bargain through the phone.
I got with my M17xR1 10% off and a backpack, so don't stare blind on the website (U.S have most of the options so check theirs).
The only thing which can't be done in Europe however is a custom nameplate?!? (I never figured out why but it's the truth, only some people have gotten them (excident?)) -
Seems all of you prefer ATI's GPUs.. Are ATI's GPU alot better compared to NVIDIA's 260/280?
-
Benchmarks show they give better performance. Also, unlike the nvidia cards they don't have stuttering and dpc latency issues. So over they are better.
-
I know, I have never placed an order online, I always bought them through a rep by phone. Dell's commission structure make reps give you discounts (or free upgrades) rather easily. I got 12% off on my R2 compared to online prices.
Well at the moment it is the only choice they offer, at least in Europe. And ATI has the latest and best mobile technology at the moment so why choose Nvidia? And the R1 has documented problems with the nvidia setup (combined with the duo cpus), so they don't have a good reputation right now (not that it is entierly their fault, as it isn't strictly a separate graphic card related problem). -
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
With Asus hogginh all the ATi Cards, Dell will definetly be dropping the new Nvidia Cards anyday, of course after they run out of the 260m/280m. I would rather see ATI though..

Dell also have a pretty huge contract with AMD, Im sure they wont be that far behind. Hopefully Dell realise they need GDDR5 this time!
-
FYI..I spoke to a dell representative this morning. Supposedly, 5870's in crossfire will be available for the M17x the 3rd week of February. This person had no information on pricing. I don't know how accurate this information is...we shall see.
-
Hope it's true. We will see.
-
Keeping my fingers crossed! I have been wanting to pull trigger on the M17x.
-
Driver updates and minor compatibility with certain games are the downside to ATi's. Sometimes a fix in a driver for a game takes months... Nvidia is usually less time, but I believe this will improve with ATi tightening their driver schedule.
-
Now I am getting excited lol

w00t w00t... -
Amen brother, amen...
-
Wonder if I can arrange for an upgrade of the cards if I ever get m17x with dual 4870's... anyone got advice on how to do this with Dellienware? Does having an EPP account help?
-
sigh i want the 5870's but i want a lappy now, sigh what to do what to do.
-
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
Enough time for me to play with the i7 + 4870s , return within 21 days, and do a final upgrade for the last time. lol
-
lol you'll say the same thing when nVidia announces their latest product in March that will be released in June. Then once again in June when ATi releases the successor to the 5870 and so on. -
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
I LOVE RED !!!! Regardless if nVidia is more powerful. Seriously though. RED for life !!!
ATi seem to be awoken from from the coma. They are finally opening up their eyes... you know what I mean? They are back to reality. lol -
lol it happens when the moon falls on earth
it's an amazing dream but it's impossible. especially for non us countries.. -

Guess HD 5870 is out on Alienware Valentine's Day Sale!
Something like: Huge Valentine's Day sale off!!! Up to 50% on any All Powerful system with HD 5870!!! Unleash the power of love today with Alienware M17x and HD 5870!!!
Edit: And we have another color choice: Chocolate Brown
-
that would be pretty freakin' epic
-
Dude I want a chocolate brown m17x.
-
I'm not a fan of either but I do prefer nVidia drivers overall and I usually have less compatibility/performance issues with them. Guess we'll see how ATi works out this time.
-
ATi drivers have improved by leaps and bounds.
nvidia used to be the gold standard. Not so much anymore. -
Wait and see people read nvidia is better andthen think it's true ...
Then they are shocked to find the truth -
ehh nvidia supports their notebook drivers, ati doesnt
we'll see if alienware pushes ati though for oem monthly releases -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
quite the oposite actually...ATI has much better notebook driver support as their drivers are good for everything, not like Nvidia where you need a different driver for every benchmark or game you want to do
-
just called and its 549 for 1 5870 and $1000 for 2 5870
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
called who and asked for what?
you do realize that no one is selling 5870s for notebooks..... -
Eurocom is charging $1044 for a pair of 5870s. Don't know if they have them in stock yet or not. If I can get $1000 for my 4870s I might consider it.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
eurocomm is known to lie about stuff......I think it is Crylo who hates them and has a thread about his experiences
I would wait until someone has them in their hands before getting too excited -
SillyHoney Headphone Enthusiast
What??? If Dell charge $1k for a dual 5870M on M17x I will definitely not get it
If its around $400 premium over 4870M I will be happy. -
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
Who did you called? What vendor? who? who ? -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
That was $1k for the cards alone, not on top of the current cost. The 4870s are about $1k for a set by themselves right now...
No more ATi 4870s for m17x only for m17x-R2
