"Dear Mr. Jayonhavok,
Thank you for contacting Alienware's Electronic Support Department.
I have fully investigated this matter with the departments in charge. There is no word up until now concerning the release of a modified chassis for the M15X mobile computer system.
Should you need fast answers, drivers, personal support, or further help, make sure to visit our Alienware Support Area at the following URL link: http://support.alienware.com/.

I pressed the issue, and here's email #2:
"Dear Mr. Jayonhavok,
Thank you for contacting Alienware's Electronic Support Department.
I do respectfully insist that there is no release of a modified chassis for the M15X mobile computer system. The confusion most likely comes from the fact that Alienware will be launching in the very near future a Silver Skullcap case design as an option to the current Ripley case.
If you have additional concerns do not hesitate to email us again. We will always be glad to help.

I hope this helps everyone...

Nice digging. Silver skullcap eh? That sounds very cool to me.
-
Wow!! Finally, they are releasing skullcap. It doesn't seem like black will come out though
-
Interesting. I like the Ripley design anyways
-
Sweet thats what I want anyway, lol my order has been stuck in phase 3 for almost 2 weeks so...changing my order is probably no big deal
-
interesting, but there seems to have been a lot more people who wanted black skullcap, not silver skullcap. We'll see if they bite
that said, I'm not entirely ready to let down the possibility of changes being made to the ripley chassis as this scenario does not explain why ripley cases were backordered for a full month. Yes, it's much more unlikely at this point, but I will reserve judgment until our latest generation of m15x owners receive their laptops. Honestly, the scale of the changes may not even warrant a notification to the AW staff (e.g. some AW suit coulda just told Quanta to change the plastic and be done with it), so we'll see.
Thanks for the update tho jay -
so the beast remains hot
-
so your guy's saying "silver skullcap". others are hearing about "black skullcap". so are they releasing everything? including "black ripley"?
-
-
Just wondering but can early adopters upgrade to these at all? I just ordered mine (due to be here by the end of july) not sure I necessarily care either way but perhaps..
-
-
expect to pay an upgrade cost in the hundreds though
-
Ouch, this is terrible news for most m15x users and future buyers...
-
i dont really see it as bad news. i actually wanted the m15x in silver ripley so im pretty satisfied. imo the skull cap seems to stand out a bit too much and it doesnt look like you can grip it as well.
-
I think eleron was referring to the fact that the new case was only referring to skullcap, not a higher-quality redesign
not that I necessarily agree with that position (still believe a redesign is possible) -
I honestly was hoping for a new higher quality chassis. I'm disappointed, but I guess we'll see how things go.
-
The CEO of Alienware Seid I should wait untel Monday and the skull cap will be listed. I will be ordering a laptop Tuseday.
-
they only do whatever are benefitcal to themselves.

Well, so be it. I would still hope that they'd be progressively improving the quality of their builds, to address any issues and problems that the system has. But, if the only options are silver Ripleys or skullcaps - then I'll stick with my Ripley order. I'd pass on a black skullcap, to be honest. But a black Ripley now... that'd be the perfect look. But it seems like they're sticking with silver for the m15x, and reserving black for the big-dog m17x. Can't afford one, and don't want the extra girth.

as production lines speed up they are able to hammer out flaws via tweaks to the plastic mixture and faulty molds /methods ..... while alienware may not have revised there CAD file mold or what ever that is the "design" for the m15x... factory's naturally as the produce more and more quantities of some thing have the ability to Bin more faulty cases and produce less mistakes..
The fact that the case errors like the hairline cracks etc seem to be disappearing fast... and the minority of case complaints to begin with.. (the original "higher quality chasis thread is number5 of a google search for "m15x case issues".... and had only what 5 or so users talking on it? if that..
fact is complaints with the m15x case are fairly low and im happy that skullcap is coming out soon. I will be jumping on a eather a black or silver matte skull cap case if the options are available in Australia. At first i was worried about the m15x being a faulty item however after the bios updates and how some users seemed to shut up complaintly but then only a select fue continued to complain endlessly i realised the issues had be largely fixed and have only been waiting for my local Alienware Resseller to get set up and running. if i do however run into alot of issues with the m15x i will eather be unlucky or just very fussy And ill be back on here explaining my issues and dislikes in the most mature way i positively can.. IMO using the NBR forum as a accurate sample space of user experience is planning for the worst nothing more lets get realistic.

Hmm so what is this new Silver Skullcap design? Can anyone post a picture so I can get some sort of Idea of what it will look like?
I'm not asking for the actual skullcap on the m15x, but something similar, maybe a previous model? -
http://www.itechnews.net/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/Alienware-Area-51-m9750-Laptop.jpg skullcap is the design pretty much all previous AW notebooks have had.
-
M15x in skullcap black\/
M17x in skullcap silver.. M15x in rip black\/
kind of clear why people are waiting for black.. and or skull cap ey.. ^_^ The contrast of the silver head and the lights look ALOT nicer with a black base paint job i think. -
yeah but that's reflective as hell. though i heard the production black will be matte. we'll see.
-
The photos chaz had taken of the notebook review m15x review where remarkable taken in a white room i think with strong controlled lighting made the notebook look almost matte and stunning... its worth a look
also i found this close up pic of the m17x.. while its from there website which is always highly photoshoped(altered) its clear than the scrn boarder is still gloss black like the current m15x but u can clearly see the base coat of the laptop a matte finish.
This should not be taken as fact however.

When I ask the question. I wanted to know when it would look more like the alienware area 51 5550I. Becuse It where I pick up the laptop and leaves no marks. That why I like the Area 51 5550I. Becuse Black was not glossy. It was Silver shiny and on Black that was not Glossy. Which made my laptop Look new for so long.
What I was told it will be a solid color. Black or Silver. -
Hot damn! Those black M15X machines make me drool. Way sexier then the silver. I wonder what it would cost me to upgrade? Probably too much.
-
haha Fr33m4n I am looking at the black M17X.
-
"Dear Mr. Jayonhavok,
Thank you for contacting Alienware's Electronic Support Department.
Unfortunately, the new case design has not been released yet. Additionally, it will not be offered as an upgrade but an option at purchasing time.
Should you need fast answers, drivers, personal support, or further help, make sure to visit our Alienware Support Area at the following URL link: http://support.alienware.com/." -
Thanks for asking them Jayonhavok. I'm perfectly happy with the Silver Ripley design, but it's too bad that you can't get it as an upgrade, alot of people are going to be dissapointed.
-
Considering almost everything that matters in this laptop is upgradable, Alienware can gets some good mileage out of this line, if somewhere down the road they offer upgrades to the design of the shell as well... Just my .02... -
umm jayonhavok sorry but all laptops are theoretically upgradeable like that.. thats due to standards in connections and components..
the reason why alienware wont let you upgrade a shell/chassis is because it clearly shows ware/age and damage and has 0 resale/repair use value for them.
I can almost certainly say they will require u to get a new system to get a new case based off preference. -
but I didn't think all laptops were upgradable... I coulda sworn a lot of builders hardwire components.... and if you were to upgrade yourself, it voids warranties.... eh... -
-
Expect a minimum of 500$ for the chassis then...I was looking to upgrade my chassis on my Sager, and after some rough calculations, it came close to 500$.
Of course, being an Alienware, yours will cost a tad more... -
-
-
yep, always willing to help
-
So how does this help it from becoming an oven with a keyboard?
If I wanted to buy something to cook my food, I'd get a Hamilton Beach Grill, not a skullcap m15x. Alienware, revise the chassis before your fanbase gets pissed. -
Cant access the customization screen on the m15x at the moment on the US Alienware site// http://www.alienware.co.uk/product_...sCode=PC-EU-LT-A51M15X-FC&SubCode=SKU-DEFAULT // Skullcap maybe?
even more strange, click on the m9750 laptop! -
the US site is completely down right now
-
"Alienware.com is undergoing maintenance to better serve you" If only it was legaly binding...
-
drumroll please...10 bucks says its the skullcap...
-
lol Id agree but i hope its the black..
-
The Moidock heard that the Skullcap will be released today.
-
Well someone there is certainly playing with the code that's for sure. It also taking AGES to render. Also no customisation on the UK site either now.
Addundum We also cannot buy the 9750 either at the moment from UK site.
No new m15x Chassis, it's just the Skullcap releasing soon!
