Hi all,
The M17x has been out for a little while now, I was just wondering if any of you knew when a NBR review was coming out? It would be nice as there don't seem to be any decent reviews out there on the internets.
I am currently an M17 owner considering getting an M17x, maybe some one can answer one of my greatest concerns now
What's the heat/noise like?
- M17 is very cool to work on, would expect this to apply for M17x
- M17 is noisy, usually have to underclock the CPU not to get annoyed in a quiet room while doing non-graphics intense tasks. Wondering how M17x stacks up here with stealth mode? In normal mode?
Cheers,
-
look in the M17x sticky...
there are several revues there and one Chaz did for NBR. -
Noise to me is not a problem either as i only hear a small hum from the fans as most of the time the machine does not get hot enough to need the fans very much with the exception of running some very demanding games such as Crysis but even then it's not bad at all, IMO.
This is a gaming maching for me so i never use stealth mode or power saver mode infact since i've had it the thing has never been unplugged from the wall. Only time it will be portable for me is when i go out of town which i do quite a bit for work. -
If you've got an M17 then the upgrade to an M17x probably won't be worth it unless you're loaded with cash. The M17 is thinner and lighter as well after all...and people have already said the screen on the M17x sucks
If you get the M17x, you may well regret it if the M17 gets 4850s...yes you will have better performance but at the cost of a lot of money -

i stand corrected...as far as an "actual" review from an NBR "reviewer" there has been none that i am aware of. you are correct that the link he did was for the hands on at the E3 program.
there have been several owners (GabeZ comes to mind) that have done self reviews of thier units and are also linked in the sticky.
apologies duane. -
No problem man. I'm actually curious as to when/if NBR will do an official review of this notebook.
Duane -
Chaz has stated he is waiting for the review unit to get to him.
i think he had mentioned the time frame, but i cannot recall...
i think soon though. -
Cool thanks. +rep

Thanks all. This forums members again prove that the greatest source of information available for the M17x, and alienware in general, is no doubt situated here.
Any way, my M17 probably going to my old man.If not, I'll likely keep it. To be honest, I am considering the M17x purely because of its looks. I'd be doing my Masters thesis on it, so if it is noisy/uncomfortable it would drive me nuts!
Just to think I only checked notebookcheck a few days ago for a review. Things happen quickly. Look forward to reading the NBR one, always informative. -
Chaz said i think august
...I'll Write up one as well -
cant wait Moo...being it appears as if it will be there tomorrow...
-
it will be
I'll try to have one up .. and just add by request but i must say i will be busy that first day :S -
Finally someone to test some of my theories
-
NP as long as the risk of frying is LOW im down
-
On a side note, NotebookCheck also mentions that their test machine packs a single 280m; is that a typo?

I'd like to see one by Cnet; they did one on the last model.
-
I was actually pretty surprised that Cnet didnt really have anything on it too. It's been bugging me.They had a post a while back saying AW might release a new lappy, but nothing came of it, there should be a bit more press about this. Most of the stuff on cnet's home page is kinda garbage. I think the m17x is a little more news worthy than which new iPhone app is out this week.
imo at least

cnet has a review on it and it was on the front page
Cnet reviewers are the worst i have seen period ... -
In any event, that's why you shouldn't depend on any one review; rather, you should seek out a variety of sources and opinions before you make a major purchase.
BTW Moo, you really must remember to mitigate your enthusiasm. Statements without supporting information doesn't help much and can diminish otherwise credible input. -
jut look @ the review and if you have any idea of what should be in a review then you will see why
my crappy review is better then theirs -
design
ergonomics
materials
keyboard layout
ports
screen
battery life
weight
performance
Also if you could throw in some nifty pictures of the product would be nice too! -
look in the review and see how much they list about gaming ?
They review it like a media notebook ...
They say its horrible on battery life since they didn't enable the 9400m
overall reviewing it as A GAMING note book they failed but as a media laptop they did a semi-good job -
design
ergonomics(????)
