You know thats pretty bunk if the m15x and m17x doesent come with lcd lighting. The lighting system so far seems to be the only thing that sets them apart from other companies like sager/dell.
-
yes, it most certainly is. i'm sure the keyboard light is 1000x sexier though.
i don't use the laptop keyboard, so i would want it for strictly decrotive purposes.
and my offer still stands for the trade, if your laptop has no lights at all -
LOL, sorry mr water, As much as I appreciate your "generous offer" i must decline and,When it arrives, Phase 4 week3, I shall keep it, all 4gb and 2.8ghz.
-
that is if they send it to you after all of your complaining! you might get a slug hot glued to the processor slot, and a few spider babies instead of a video card
-
haha. No, they dude said he will give me a good discount and give me the backpack for free if I am not happy, so, I will be happy either way.
rep!!!!! cmon people, I give it.. -
THanks mrwater those pics look exactly liek mine. Thanks again. So maybe there will be hope.. Just a glimer lol.
-
Mrwater, thank you for the pictures. It put this issue into focus for me anyway...In roughly 3 days, there have been over 150 posts on a lighting feature that as cool as it looks you essentially have to be in the dark to appreciate. I understand why people are upset that (1) the rim lighting feature appears to have been advertised from the beginning for both the m15x and m17x; (2) the rim lighting feature went out on early "pre-configured" m15x models; (3) Alienware did not tell anyone that other models (even more expensive ones) would not have the rim lighting feature; and (4) Alienware's multiple different and conflicting answers leaves a lot to be desired and at least gives the impression that they may be trying to advertise one thing and deliver another and/or just tell customers what they want to hear in order to close a sale. With all that said, though, for me personally, I can't get that upset about lighting that I may only be able to see in the dark. I just don't work or play games in the dark that much. On the other hand, Alienware's response to the issue is of much greater concern.
-
Oh and at my work and school we always work in the dark, I would not mind being a little bit of a show off, its always nice, cuz cmon, we all got an alienware so we can look like the shiz. Everyone knows that alinware comps are sexy, and sexyness, was a big selling point for me on this one. If I could care less about it I would have just gotten an ugly ass computer with the same specs for way, way, less. -
-
You mean a Dell?
I kid, I kid.
-
-
I dunno man, with all these issues the Dell XPS 1730 is looking better and better. Not to mention that the dell with the extreme proc 2gigs of ram and dual 8800m GTX cards scored at 14,000 on 3dmark06.
-
The worst part is that I just got an ad booklet from Dell tonight with the 1730 and the WOW edition. I'm ashamed to say that I had never seen any pics of the lights on that laptop. Not as cool as Alienware, but still nice looking though.
-
omg, the wow edition is the BIGGEST rip off ever. They even took out the lcd's on the top for that whack ass paint job, it looks like a kid went into photoshop and slapped some decals on grey. They charge you soooo much for that paint job, you might as well get a voodoo. And besides, the 1730 weighs like 13 lbs and is HUGE, you seriously scrifice mobility at that point.

The real tests are games, and SLI isn't all that great:

I'd save your money.
Also, note that the M1730 is A HUGE MACHINE. And I mean huge. I tested it in November and it was one of the biggest notebooks I have ever seen/used.
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4085
Not portable at all and abysmal battery life. The m15x, based on the comparisons I have seen, would be very small next to it. The M1730 is definitely a nice notebook, but just be aware of its downsides. -
Yeah, I have sli in my desktop, and to be honest, there are a lot of times I need to turn it off to actually get a better gaming experience, this is due to the horrible optimization of sli, it is still a work in progress. Just be happy you dont have crossfire lol, my friend has it, and he has nothing but problems.
The 8800m gtx will be totally sufficent for your mobile needs,
If you on the other hand do not have a desktop and do not mind carrying that beast around, say hello to a really good workout wherever you go -
You never hear much about Crossfire, seems like a big bust for Ati.
Right now, I have NO computer at all. My desktop that I used to use is around 6-7 years old. Yeah. My dad never understood the need to upgrade so I was stuck with a useless piece of junk. I'm tired of waiting for the m17x so I'm tempted to get an m15x and then buy a desktop later on to use as my powerhouse (and media center too most likely). -
-
I just want a notebook for my school work, 3dmax and ofcourse Crysis moding/map making.

thanks for the pics mrwaters. I figured that was the case. it make more sense.. p.s. those lights are HOT!.
-
Hey apparently there IS a patch, there is another thread with a link to download the patch, someone there said it worked!!!!
-
Ya i tried it and it does work!!!!
-
yep, works perfectly
-
Ok everyone I am very happy about the outcome of this thread, If I did not start this mabye we would never have that wonderful patch from packer, So thank you to everyone for your tireless effort and it is great that this story has a happy ending.
-
YAY! Now absinthe can shut up about the stupid side lights.
although the value of my laptop just shot down, guess the trade is null and void right -
apparently so....
-
lol I knew you were the one concerned about this issue the most, so i thought it'll give you peace of mind, knowing that a patch exists.
So I guess I was correct the first time i posted, that the lights were already in the laptop. -
-
This is awesome news, I have just sent an email asking them to confirm that I will be receiving light tubes even if disabled, then I might pay for my order see what they say
-
Guys!! Engadget posted the story!! Holy crap...

Congrats everybody, you got an OFFICIAL response from Alienware:
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4243 -
That's great! Thanks for the update! I just wish they had stated that beforehand rather than giving out multiple stories.
-
yeah, or they could have sent a message along with everyones' computers. I mean, if they're gonna send me this message in my black support binder apologizing for the fact that my oh-so-valuable mesh "HAT" is backordered, they could have done the same about the lighting.
I say this not because I really cared about having or not having the light, but just because it would have prevented all this confusion. -

Yeah, they had to say something sometime...
-
jesus christ... all this fuss over a freakin light on a freakin overpriced laptop
-
How is it overpriced? Doesn't cost that much more than a Sager and it looks much better. The price seems just right to me.
-
So, I guess Magui70's sales rep was right the whole time. Pity no one believed the plausible and likely explanation and kept right on yelling.
Okay, I really didn't intend to insult there - but I just had the benefit of just reading the whole thread as a newcomer, but that's how it looks from the outside. -
-
Yeah I got that. I understand completely why that'd be so annoying and shows a scary lack of professionalism in the CS team for Alienware (I guess they get their guys from the same place as EA). It was more a question of why did no one try analysing the myriad answers to find the most likely ones and pursue them. It's easier to catch out sales staff when they think you got the right line.
-
sorry so lets get this right, for new laptops they have got the sidescreen lights working out of the box? or are they removed completely from the design and can never be turned on?
thanks
antony -
but yeah, the 'Lightpipe' (around the outside of the screen) comes by default.
the only lighting option is the keyboard... all 5 other 'zones' are included. -
Yea way to dig up this thread from the dead
. But anyways, yes you will get all 6 zones but don't forget that you have to buy the keyboard.
-
not on the m17x they don't. only five zones on the m17x. funny thing, the image used for the advanced alienfx theme creator is a silver ripley m17x with lightpipes (count the lies *chortle*)...
-
WOW I have not seen this thread in months...Good to see old faces I guess??? Let the man get his fusstrations out. You got to take into consideration that some people bought this machine for its pretty lights : )
