    Guys,

What is the normal idle/gaming temperatures for the 8800GTX in the m15x's?

I'm in the process of trying to troubleshoot one of my games and noticed that the GPU temperature does hit 80-83 while playing it.

    Thanks,

    - Denver

Most people say it's a bit high for a laptop, but for an m15x that's perfectly normal.

For me, idle was about 65C, while gaming, the temps would go to 88C max

    Thanks EvilWill32....

I thought that my issue could potentially be due to things getting too warm, but based on your numbers that doesn't appear to be the case.

Back to the drawing board :(

Hi DenverESullivan, the temperature for the GPU may run between 65C(Idle, normal use)-96C(extreme/prolonged gaming). The m15x also has a dedicated fan for the heat dispersed by the GPU on the right side of the system. Our m15x system users did experience an overheating issue when the system was first released but we've included a new BIOS to resolve the issue.

If you find that your system is overheating or are having any issues with it, you will want to visit us at My Hive Technical Support via the main support page from the Country the system was ordered from; or contact our support team at 1-800-494-3382, option 3 (US)/0800 279 9751 (International).

    Thanks Rose,

I didn't realize that the 8800m GTX chipset ran that hot...

My highest temperature during the game that's giving me issues is 85C, which - based on your response and that of others is normal. Correct?

Since I'm having no other issues and my problem seems confined to just this one game I'm guessing that my issue is just that the game's poorly written.... Wouldn't be the first piece of software nowdays that is.

FWIW -- I can honestly say that so far - even with the problems I've had with my machine - that this is truely the best notebook I've ever used. Also, Alienware has provided (me at least) with the best support I've EVER received from ANY vendor.

My M15X usually idles around 97C degrees. However if I load up Call of Duty 2 it usually jumps to around 117C degrees. M15X truely is a powerful and small laptop.

PS: Can someone explain why it always crashes about 20 minutes after I start up a game? Tried to open it up but the hinges are already cracked and I'm afraid the whole screen will fall off like the "E" key when I took it out of the Alienware box.

please visit the NBR Cooling Central for this answer. ;)

your system is shutting down since the videocard is reaching a threshold temperature and forces your entire system to shutdown in order to prevent further damage from overheating.

when was the last time you cleaned out the fans and vents of your system?

    Blackhalo,

Those temps are definitely way too high!

Remember, water boils at 100C. That's why you're crashing.

You probably should contact the support folks.
