With the Release of 40nm GPU's and im sure many people wondered what fits where, I gathered some simple info to help people know which card is better.
This is also a place to talk about new GPU's and upgrades. We always love for people to test with us![]()
GPU's in GREEN are 40nm GPU's they run half the TDP of most GPU's , they are the newest out.
I also made this thread since the new M17x and M15x will more then likely be using Nvidia cards and I figured people needed to know before they buy.

dang i was hoping for new info on newer enthusiast gt200 or gt300 cards... and mxm info...
-
and no Offical word on what MXM they are going to use. It could vary , just like the GTX 280m and GTX 260m both have a 2.1 MXM and a 3.0b MXM.
Depends who and what they decide to put it in -
cant wait for GT300 and I hope they are 40nm and MXM 3.0b so they will fit in our M17x's....
-
-
Did you even click the links on nvidia's website?
Under Specifications it clearly states "MXM 3.0b" see picAttached Files:

Oh.... My bad then
Why wouldn't the 300 be 3.0b?? Is there a new spec due out soon? -

Why wouldn't the 300 be 3.0b?? <-- idk but they have to change so freaking often... if not the clevo d901c folks could upgrade...
Is there a new spec due out soon? <-- i dont know... the gtx 280m's are a ripoff in the m17x... $300 cheaper to get gtx 260m sli...Click to expand... -
the characters in quote tags don't count towards the post's total, and you need 10 characters per post. no way around that.

Thats the reason i want the real ones for a real performance increase. -
HellCry said: ↑The current gtx 280m is based of the old 9800 series core and is not the real deal.. its barely better than the 9800m gtx.. <-- true true... nvidia needs to step up to the plate instead of giving us the crumbs, do they want ati to win?
Thats the reason i want the real ones for a real performance increase. <-- yeah a GT300 could give 2x+ power than GTX 280M (i actually heard 6-15x but thats a pure rumor so im gonna play it safe lol)Click to expand... -
Right now the GTX 280M is nothing special. Its better just to go with 260m SLI.Though, if I were to have single card, I would want the GTX 280M or Mobility 4870 over the 260.

looks like nvidia is playing it safe by trying the new architecture on the midranged cards first. They wouldnt want to make a highend card with this new design and have it screw up

Oh and better performance. -
Yeah, I'd "settle" for 4807's w/ GDDR5 in CF

Rorschach said: ↑Finally someone else gets it. All nvidia has done is found a way to convert last years high tdp gpu's down to low tdp midrange gpu's. Since they used a 128 bit bus, these cards will still have very similar memory bandwidths to the 9800m series.Click to expand...
BUT I still would rather have the new core architechture, die shrink, and lower tdp (less heat might = better oc). -
Why not just make a GDDR5 280M, call it the 295, and umm yeah.
-
How about Alienware just giving us the darn GDDR5 4870's, and umm yeah.

Because it's an Nvidia chipset, and Nvidia probably has an agreement set on the M17x.

Chaz has already confirmed with AW that ATI chips are coming for the M17x (and will use the same 9400/MCP79 chipset).
That, and my M17x user manual has BIOS optios listed specifically for the ATI cards -

nobodieshero said: ↑How is a MXM 3.0b slot a NVIDIA chipset only? We already know AW has 4850/4870's stockpiled, the only agreement that I could see with Nvidia is to delay the release of the DDR5's to get decent sales on the 260/280's.Click to expand...
Compatibility is one thing, business is another. The compatibility is there, but if you don't think Nvidia has the muscle to sway Alienware in a large market mover they have here, you're terribly mistaken. At least 80% of the 280Ms Nvidia produces will be in the M17x... -
anothergeek said: ↑And how do you know this? You've been to AW's warehouse and seen these stockpiled 4870s?

Chaz has confirmed with higher-ups at AW that the 4800's are working and will be an option soon.
On top of that the M17x user manual has BIOS settings specifically addressing the use of hybrid technology with ATI gpu's. -

lol He is correct
AW does infact have the 4850's I personally think the ones that were sold to Pmauak were actually one for the m17 and the guy got confused -

And AW reps and Chaz confirmed the M17x will get them
What more can you possibly need? -
i also remember quotes from E3 articals (from a wide array of sites) that AW specifically wanted the ability to use nVidia and ATI cards in the M17x.
another great selling point for fans of either brand.
(and no, i dont have links, just memory to serve...) -
Its in Youtube Videos and Chaz talked to the reps.
-
Let's not forget the M17x's own USER MANUAL everyone
