Just tried this ...had backlight bleed just under the cam and down in the left hand corner ..very bright...didn't have backlight bleed before. I reinstalled 332.21.....no bleed. I didn't think that drivers would have that kind of effect.

The screen was also noticeably brighter with the beta. At least 2 notches using the Fn page up/dn function.

I have not encountered this side effect before. (sometimes I think these should be renamed "Gremlinware") :D

I just literally updated to the latest non-beta driver yesterday (332.xxx) to replace my 331.xxx, installed drivers and was coming to this board to post the question as to whether one should do that or rely on the Dell/Alienware update website to determine what drivers are needed?

I tried to use the Dell website to analyse my computer and it seemed to recommend a bunch of out of date drivers and after downloading them, the computer told me that they couldn't be installed because they're superseded by current drivers.

Lastly, Is it wise to download beta drivers? if there's a problem with them, is it easy to revert to current stable drivers or can you open up a can of worms and cause all sorts of problems?

Just a suggestion but maybe with the importance of graphics drivers to these computers, we can have a sticky thread keeping track of the latest recommended drivers in general?

To weird....I will have to run the test again....I don't see how my scores went down and yours went up on the same GPU minus the SLI of course heh. And while I am at it....maybe I should ask. When you guys are running your tests, which number are you going off of in the end? the combined score of just the GPU score which is kind of off the side and underneath the main score.

EDIT: Re-Ran the test and scored 5022 this time so pretty much right where I was before.

Also are you running a modified Vbios Fox? I can't get my core clock to go past 771 to save my life but I see you got 850 out of it.

Scores went up in 3DMark11 in Windows 8.1 as well. Here is a comparison I just ran. 332.21 WHQL versus the new beta. Single GPU, mild OC, stock CPU turbo max (no CPU OC).

    [IMG] [IMG]
You can compare CPU (Physics) and Graphics scores only to answer different questions that may arise, but at the end of the day the only score that matters is the overall benchmark score. Look again at the 3DMark11 screen shots. They are not run at 850. However, with GPU boost disabled, 850 becomes the new "stock" core clock speed for 780M.

Yes, I never use a stock vBIOS on my performance systems. They are always inferior, especially NVIDIA vBIOS. They have limitations that hold them back to make their rebrands look better, LOL. For example, 880M is the same GPU as 780M with more vRAM, higher stock clocks and higher stock voltage. GPU Boost needs to be disabled for the best results, too. There is no reason to run the GPU at a core clock speed less than the boost value for gaming, so there is no good reason for GPU boost to exist... it's just a marketing gimmick that sounds like something special and the reality is that it impairs performance. Running 945MHz on core is a very minor core OC for 780M (less than stock on 880M). When I am chasing numbers it is usually 1100MHz or higher.

Hope this helps. I merged the discussion in the M18x/AW18 sub-forum with this thread in the main forum for the benefit of the entire Alienware community.

Wow, even a slight OC increased it by 1100 points over what I am getting. I did flash the new vBios to my 780m but the only increase was from 5502 to 5503 on 3DMark lol......But I have not overclocked it at all. My 3D Mark 11 pulled 7702.

So I downloaded 3DMark and ran the Cloud Gate and Fire Strike tests.... the latter appears to be for PC's an order of magnitude more powerful than what I have..

Oddly, the test results seem to show the # of cards as 1, so I'm not sure why the SLI isn't being checked.

The Cloud Gate test gave me a score of 17044, apparently better than 69% of all results, while the Fire Strike (for Extreme gaming PCs) gave me a 4959 or better than 59% of "high performance gaming PCs" score. Both said my drivers were no approved (as I downloaded the beta's after reading your guys posts).

    http://www.3dmark.com/fs/1627830

Interestingly, when I sent the Fire Strike to "Extreme" mode, the frame rates were below 5 fps... so I aborted the test.. it was painful to watch. I assume that is a setting for Quad SLI, $10000 desktop machines.

And FWIW, the Ice Storm (Extreme setting) score was 109120, but I guess that's made for lower power GPUs.

Cool app... anything else it's useful for for the $24 price?

Ok, this merits a separate post, rather than an edit, and you'll all probably think I'm an idiot.. but I'm pretty sure I set my Nvidia control panel to enable SLI, but apparently after downloading the Beta drivers it was disabled..

Suffice it to say, I re-ran the two main tests and significant improvement. Up from 59-69 percentile, to 83%.

I've got a lot to learn, and re-learn about PC's... 12 years in the Mac wilderness has made me lazy! ;)

Just realized you all are referencing a 3DMark11, so I downloaded that one, the freeware version and got this result, after the first attempt giving me a black screen and an error...due to something not giving 3DMark11 access.

And here is the pay version (Advance) score... doesn't seem all that good in 1920x1080

No, we would never think you are an idiot. Everyone is a newbie at one point. You'll catch on quick, so no worries.

When you install a new video driver SLI always has to be re-enabled. Those scores are with stock clock speeds and I am assuming a stock vBIOS and they are normal for those conditions. It appears your machine is working correctly.
