I'm sure its been discussed but I've searched and could not find a thing.

    1. How high can the P8700 2.53ghz cpu be OC'ed to?
    2. If I want to OC the 2.53ghz to 2.8ghz, could I leave it like that without having any problems such as overheating the system or damaging the cpu (reducing its lifespan)?

    I want a 2.8ghz cpu without paying the extra $150 :D

all you have to do then is change the multiplier to 10.5 and leave everything else stock

I can not imagine NOT being able to hit 2.8 on a qx9300.....

If he's talking about saving money he must be talking about the P8700. Yes you should get up to 3Ghz with the P8700.

Well 2.53GHz is the stock rate on a Q9300....I've gotten mine at 2.93 GHZ without problems, and seen many others on here go even higher without having any issues. So you should be able to blow past 2.8GHz, if you are thinking about the Q9300....

I just OC'd my P8700 up to 3.125 (1250 FSB) except it only shows 2.96 in CPU-Z. Regardless, I'm happy with it.

what version CPU-Z? and is the multiplier set to 9.5 when it shows that? it may just be due to speed step throttling down for idle period

Newest CPU-Z, whatever that is and yeah the multi never goes over 9.5. Probably speedstep, is there any way to disable it? I don't really want to have it enabled since nowadays I'm plugged in most of the time.

So how long do you plan on leaving it OC'd at 3ghz? Forever :D ?

I was concerned with it going under 9.5. You fsb/4*9.5 is your cpu clock speed

but it will show as lower if the multiplier (9.5) is lower due to speedstep

In the M17x I am unsure where/how to disable speedstep. Pretty sure if you set minimum cpu utilization to 100% it always stays max clock

Haha nah, I toned it down to 2.8 where I will leave it.

I had it set to minimum 100%, max 100% and it still downclocks it at idle. I am running that windows performance thing right now with CPU-Z open and it says the core speed is 2798.9 (close enough to 2.8) but the multi is still 9.5...Not a huge deal since it runs at 2.8, I just find it weird..

EDIT: 2.53 gives me a CPU score of 5.4, 2.8 gives me a score of 5.6 in the Windows performance thing. Not that it matters, just posting to give people a frame of reference.

Does the p8600 (2.4GHz) have speedstep? Like if you OC it to 2.8GHz, will it show up on CPU-Z as 2.6GHz?

speedstep just changes the multi...cpu-z will report whatever the current speed, sometimes (when under load) it will be 2.8, other times (when idle) it may show 2.6

CPU-z will show what its running Speed step halfs the speed
