That's a stuck pixel. A dead pixel is a black dot on your screen.

If you think about how much a laptop gets bounced around in daily use even in a laptop bag I seriously doubt a dead or stuck pixel was the result of shipping. That had to occur prior to production, like when they constructed the screen itself. Hell I'd think that if it happened in shipping you'd either have a big dent in the back or a small crack in your screen to cause that, and since there are neither that leaves it being done in production.

And I'm telling you as someone who spent 3 years shipped systems across the country as a central distributor point for and insurance brokerage that it does happen. Temperature, and simply having hardware thunked down does cause stuck pixels to occur. During that job one of the things I did was to inspect the screen. I saw any stuck pixels I contacted dell and had a screen sent out....I was DCSE certed so I did the repairs myself. But the simple fact is that I was getting calls from the other end that systems were showing up with a handful of stuck pixels. Had them do the standard to unstick them but in reality it didn't work all the often.
    It happens.

So... is the touchpad just really bad because of the matte surface? Does it seem like it would get better over time as it slowly gets broken in?

I'm still amazed at how fast everyone who has recently placed their orders are getting them. I placed mine on the 4th, went through on the 5th, and my ETA is still the 29th. I'm also wondering how many systems are being reported as defective that got them so fast.

    CP from wiki

Assembly of desktop computers for the North American market takes place at Dell plants in Austin, Texas (original location), Lebanon TN (opened in 1999), Winston-Salem NC (opened in 2005) and at the Miami, Florida facility of its Alienware subsidiary. Dell servers come from Austin, TX.

Dell's desktop plant in Austin, Texas was shut down in 2008. It closed its desktop manufacturing in Labanon TN in early 2009. The last major U.S. plant in North Carolina is scheduled to close in January, 2010. It marks the end for most of Dell's personal computer manufacturing in the United States. It's expected that most of the work carried out in North Carolina will be transferred to contract manufacturers in Asia, though Dell said some of the work will move to its own factories overseas.[48]

Basically Dell is a company that takes US money and creates jobs abroad. Big surprise, everyone does it these days. No wonder our economy keeps tanking.

the M15 arrives in a box stamped "Made in China", where I believe all Alienware laptops now originate. Dell's xps line of laptop come from Malaysia.

If you are new to the board, don't read too much into the hysterics of some of our posters: the M15 is a great laptop. Those whining are a minority and often their "issues" are idiosyncratic and not widespread nor prevalent in all M15s.

You are unlikely to get a bad screen as Dell shipped all of them to one of our posters, for which we should all be thankful. Hopefully, he will end up with a perfect machine eventually for all his woes.

Aside from Joker's diagnosis of the power issue at full stress, there are no other design problems with the machine: all other "issues" have been resolved by driver updates, new Bios and tweaks that various posters have messed around and posted for others gain.

To my count, about 3 posters have actually quit on the system and sent their laptops back -- everyone else has satisfactorily resolved any questions and is productively using, gaming and surfing on the best 15 inch laptop available.

Sorry to hear Panda....that noise was very pronounced in the previous Dell XPS 13 (not studio) It was a motherboard problem which specifically pertaining to voltage. Lots of motherboards were fried cause of that. 2 of my friend had XPS 13 and both of them had their mobo swapped out 2-3 times. They had exact same screeching noise as you did. Return it, the one you have will fry, it's only a matter of time.

Mine runs silent so far.. crossing my finger.

Laptop is made in China....I'm Chinese..I know there's a silicone valley in china (of course its different name) where all laptops. Lenovo, HP, Dell, the WHOLE city is factory making computers and electronics.

Take a look where all our laptops are from.

    hi there

i keep it with lgsshedden and joker, who already mentioned not the be hysterical.

i received a wonderful machine, sorry for you panda :( and i´m totally happy, of course, the speakers could be better and also the lag of the touch pad.

personally i own 3 laptop now and working on 2 duty laptop´s and none of them can compete with the M15x and whenever i bring it to work, people are freaking out. the rig is fast and powerful and the design is awesome :)

so, every new reader here, be aware, if everything is alright with some owners machine, the won´t post here, they sit home (like me :) ) and are gaming like crazy :D incl me

but after following this thread, i felt to post my comments, so everybody can see, there are rig´s which are perfect.

of course, the problem joker figured out is something which has to be cleared and i´m sure DELL will do, i missed the bluetooth card because of a glitch in their website, i called and they solved the problem

so guys, problems which are going to be posted here are NOT in every machine

    Mine too...

    Silent
    Fast
    Quiet
LED beautiful and no dead pixel
    No screech
No body flex and no loose parts
Low Heat (peak gaming temp for GTX 260 is 60C)

Hate the touch pad tho but oh well.

I change my laptop twice a year so I have owned a fair share. If you want to buy and discouraged, don't. Try it out.

Now that's just plain funny. Continuing on from yesterday's adventures of "Where is the M15x going to ship to" Today's episode finds little Johnny calling up Fedex trying to understand why the delivery status is in RED and has a note on it saying "Delivery exception" What's that boy? Old man Jeffers is stuck down the well? Fedex can't read a shipping address?! Dogs and cats living together? Mass hysteria!?? *

That attempt yesterday to change the address did indeed occur. Much to Johnny's chagrin because apparently I confused the CRAP out of fedex. The address is a fedex airport depot. So the part went from the depot...got on a truck...and is going back to the depot for pickup...the question is when it will arrive....this is just funny. I wonder if this will get stuck in an infinite loop and I will have to wait beside the road and hijack a Fedex truck to get my laptop. :p

*This Ghostbuster moment was brought to you by irony...don't leave home without it.

    UPDATE:
    The tracking info has updated.....
    Held for pickup
    MINNEAPOLIS, MN
    Score! :D :D :D :D :D

So when I go to pick up my Dell warranty parts at Fedex in 20 I'll pick up my lappy. WEEEEE

Why would you pay an american wage if you can pay a chineese wage for a very manual, tedious, repetitive job. Why are people suprised that the construction is outsourced to low wage countries.

Anyways, I should be getting my M15x any day now, and right now it looks that it is indeed the best laptop on the market in that "size". On another note, I read somewhere that the touchpad is a lot more responsive on Ubuntu (I will confirm as soon as I get the laptop), so this can be fixed by a driver. On another note, who wants to use a touchpad on a gaming notebook?

I am loving my M15X. Hooked it up to my 24" monitor via an HDMI to Displayport adapter yesterday and began my trip through LOST Season 5 :p Tonight I get to try it on our 52"!

No dead/stuck pixels, no motherboard whining, quiet at idle, very fast, I scored just over 12k 3dmarks stock with some control panel tweaks, love the design, speakers are decent and 2 hours of playing L4D2 showed it to be markedly faster than my desktop ([email protected],GF9800GT) while the fans only became noticeable a handful of times.

So far it has bested my expectations and I am quite pleased with it.

Oh, and the touchpad on mine is entirely usable out of the box. Its refresh speed is slower than a mouse, but it is accurate and accelerates adequately for me to use it without struggling.

Does Dell tracking update from "In Production" to a boxing stage or does it just go straight to "Shipping"?

I think that the "boxing" stage only shows up if you call for a status update (it's part of the "production" stage on the website status update).

yeah, boxing only comes up if you call, but don't trust them too much. It went two days for my machine to go from boxing to shipping.

also dang snowstorm, delayed my M15x from being delivered today.

Thought I would chime in on my positive experience with the M15x as well...ordered 24 Oct and received 3 Nov 09 (via AAFES, retired military).

Since receiving the laptop I have had nothing but positive experiences. Flawless screen, practically silent operation, exceptionally cool operation under load (WoW, COD2, Dragon Age), exceptional fit and finish. About the only complaint I would have is the weight, but I knew that going in.

This laptop is worth every penny I paid for it, and when it's time to upgrade, I will likely go Alienware (via Dell) again...although that will be a year or two down the road.

If your intent is to purchase this laptop to use it daily and.or game on it (and not run synthetic benchmarks), I believe you will be exceptionally happy with your purchase.

This is my first Alienware, desktop or laptop. I have used high dollar gaming desktops and I have used an XPS1710 with GTX 7950 for power machines. This M15x beats both of those hands down, both for size, quietness, and speed...granted those previous gaming machines were limited by technology available at the time of purchase.

Don't be disappointed or distracted by the few that are having issues...I believe they are real issues, however they are the minority. Even $100k automobiles have a few that slip by and need corrections...it is a fact of manufacturing.

Try it and use it for real world applications...you will be assimilated!

I personally am not letting the negative hype scare me from what I know is a great system. I can't wait to get my hands on mine.

    TX for your input

New M15x with the 256GB SSD arrived today. Windows experience rates it as a 6.8 with the GPU being the bottleneck. Even though this thing has a Samsung with no GC/Trim, it flies. Guess I'll be either selling it or running Tony TRIM.
