Based on the last updates from Joker and Nagshead we should be seeing it any time now... They anticipated 2-3 weeks to release a final, tested version.

The NB is incorporated into the chip so it's expected to run hotter. Plus the CPU was OC'd 5% so it was operating above stock frequency. The temps for core 1 peaked at 80c only one time, the rest of the time (once the fan revved up) it peaked at 78C. The rest of the cores ran 2-4C cooler. If you compare this to Soviet Sunrise's modded 8760, it runs on average 6C hotter without any mods and a thinner heatsink. I think that's pretty decent. A little copper modding + better fitted heatsink (remember mine is somewhat defective) should drop the core temperature another 2C which would be near Clevo temps.

I am quite sure Nagshead will post in here to let everyone know when it is out given how much time he spent in this thread back when they were trying to figure this thing out.

It's beginning to look that way. They are probably putting it through further QA to make sure everything works as it should. It's better that they thoroughly test this new bios and then release it rather than prematurely put it out with issues. My pre-release version is still not 100% perfect, it sometimes briefly flickers in GTA IV with a full load (maybe once every 30 minutes or so and it's very brief). I've mentioned this to nagshead so hopefully he brings this to the attention of the engineers. I'd estimate the throttling trip in the bios needs to be raised another 10 watts to completely get rid of the issue once and for all.

Makes sense. They might expect high demand for the m17x with HD5870 & This kind of flickering issues will cause bad QA issues. That's the last thing they want. I guess !

Wouldn't be a full refresh, the 5870's would just be added to the current R2 model.

Adding a note - the drivers labeled CD/DVD on the first post are actually the drivers for the media card reader. My SD card reader wasn't working and after a while of poking around and attempting to get them updated, still isn't working.

    Edit:
    1. I attempted to get the SD card reader working by installing the update (R251071.exe).
    2. Failed to work (though, the SD card would briefly appear when I was ejecting it).
    3. Uninstalled the RICOH Media Driver using the control panel. This was the update that I had installed.
    4. In Devices and Printers, it had the warning icon over the computer icon. Right clicked on it, then clicked Troubleshoot
    5. Troubleshooter detected the problem and brought up a window that allowed for a download from Dell.
    6. Downloaded and installed the update (Ricoh_R5C833_A00_R240788.exe)

This enabled the card reader, but the warning icon is still there and it is attempting to install the driver still.

Still trying to get the whole thing working just fine.

Anyone with any idea whether USB 3.0 will be included with next week's M17x-R2 with the ATI Radeon 5870 release? No so far fetched considering that the Asus N61jq already comes with USB 3.0

How do I check? I can customize the M6500 on Dell's US website but I don't see any USB 3.0 mentioned anywhere. ^_^;;; The Tech Specs tab still just mentions USB 2.0

You can get the 4870 on the R1 so why wouldnt they add the 5870 to the r2 in the graphic card options on the website. Its just a another option for the GPU not the CPU.

Hello guys . I dont know if any of you have seen this video over here

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOxr-fCUnq8&feature=related

At 2:07 it shows somebody playing on the new R2 M17x. The specs it says are i7 920 xm , 8 gigs of ram and dual ati 4870. Now I am wondering how the hell was that guy playing left 4 dead 2 without any flickering?!?!?
    I am just really curious

Probably a pre-production M17x-R2 with none of the bios restrictions production models have.

I tried new comand center and it must be flawed. My FX lighting freaked out constantly and I kept getting errors. I tried reinstalling but it got worse. So I had to go back to the origonal.

The date is the posting date, not the actual date of the software. The original R2 disc has A04, v 2.0.xx, the "new" broken one is A05, v2.5.xx, and the replacement posted yesterday is A04 again.

Oh man, that's awesome if the 5870 is that close :) At that point, my only hesitation in ordering one is my fear they'll ship me a CCFL screen by mistake, and I won't be able to tell the difference until a year or two from now when it starts fading :(

But...I think I'd probably risk it were this available today.

Dang, happy they're fixing the BIOS, but why the FRAK won't they fix the M15x? Do they hate money?

Dumb question, but my M17X has 6GB 1333Mhz RAM, is there anyone that has tested the performance difference 6GB Single Channel vs 4GB Dual Channel? I'm wondering if it's really worth switching out a 4GB module for a 2GB one for the Dual Channel config?

Tom's Hardware did an article on this a while back. Bottom line is that there is not much benefit to dual channel these days because processor caches are more efficient than in the early days. Certainly not worth the cost of a 4GB DIMM unless you actually need 8GB anyway.

Quick question for you guys, i have the M17x and im thinking about trying to see if they will replace it for the M17x-R2. Are there any problems besides the issue with the high end Quad core procs? I have seen that one but didnt know if there are any others.

    Please advise. Thanks.

The R2 is flawless. The 10.3 ATI drivers pretty much sealed the deal. With the new BIOS imminent there is nothing else to consider. It's a solid machine.

Now, as far as getting Dell to replace your R1 with an R2 if you are out of your 21-days, well, then good luck. That will be your biggest issue.

Well this was a replacement for my M1730. The rep said that if i was not happy with it that i could get a differnt machine. I called in a couple weeks after having the machine and complained about the DPC latency. Tech on the phone said that if they didnt have a fix within a couple of weeks he would push for an exchange. Well its been about a month. I really wanna keep my M17x but im so tired of waiting on them. Thanks for your input :)

I couldnt find the OP on this but someone had asked about the power supply replacement for the M17x. The one they show in parts dept is only a 210w and is $119.00. The actual 240w has a part # of 330-7843 (you will have to chat or call, as not on the website) But is only 59.95 plus tax and shipping. Just thought I would share.

    Hey guys,

Finally got my M17x and I was wondering, with the RGB LED screens, how are you correcting the massive red shift? The only way I can see so far is to use the ATi CCC to make color changes pulling some red. Are folks using the built in Windows calibration controls instead or some other utility? Any help greatly appreciated!

Hey txs for that info Grock :) , I been considering buying a spare power supply for my living room where I watch my movies from a HD projector. It is a lot easier just bringing the laptop there without unplugging the power supply in my bedroom.
I googled 330-7843 and came up with link below to the Power Supply

    My rep in Malaysia tells me the 5870 option will be out in March and the M17x R2 was launched here unofficially only after about a week after the Dell US website had it up so it shouldn't be that long for you guys in the US. Strange though, seeing that Dell assembles computers here in Malaysia (not sure about the Alienware though - most of its parts seem to come from China these days). ^_^;;;
