It doesn't help the battery out, these are Li-Ion batteries which don't have the dreaded "memory effect".

doesn't it help the battery by not using up cycles? All batteries can take so many drain and recharge cycles I thought? On average 300 cycles which I believe the M11x is rated at.

If you're plugged in and the battery is at full, then its not like its constantly pumping juice to the battery, right? :p

Oh wait I thought you said something about conditioning it. Yeah if you store your battery at 40% charge it will last longer than keeping it always plugged in. Sorry, I think I'm going insane. :confused2:

np, quick Q. Does your guys volume UP/Down display a notification on screen showing the volume bar go up/down? Only on mute/unmute does a notification pop up. Rather annoying not seeing where the volume level is and having to look in the corner where the volume slider is.

wow thats pretty strange since the m11x feels so solidly built. Is there a gap in the hinge area like what happened to the m15x.

    @Caskey

Wow that is really lame. The hinge basically split in half where the 2 pieces of plastic meet together right? I guess the only solution is to call Dell tomorrow for warranty service

the port is right above the memory card slot. i dont have the 3g card on my m11x but for some reason the port is still there but putting in a sim card doesn't do anything

    @ Casey

My right hinge is really loose too. Makes an awful squeak sound whenever i move the screen.

Also on the left side of the screen I think the screen might be sliding down? I see light starting to come from the cracks now. The right side of the screen doesn't have that problem.

@dingo and ryuken = the chassis for the m11x is the same regardless of region. So the simcard slot is there whether you have a modem or not. Only americans can get a 3g modem option. The reason why we in Asia Pac don't have to the option to get one with a 3g modem is still a mystery, much like how we don't get engraving.

I guess those of us in build hell will see if they fix the gap in the plastic screen cover issue by the time they build our orders. Hopefully Dell steps it up here, I don't want to call a tech out to fix my lappy.

if this is turing out to be the same issue like the m15x i will be very very disappointed because this feels so much sturdier than the m15x. also if this is like the m15x then having it being fixed over time is unlikely. It is either the hinges are an issue or the person who put your laptop together did not do a good job.

    @jackpfree

i think i can indivually select the black option in the alienfx wheel. that will turn off the lights. so instead of selecting a color u select black.

    Yes, there are 5 zones.

maybe someone can correct me, but the power button cannot be turned off completely.

also, the fan lights up only if the key board is also lit. it would be cool if the fan was its own zone

-for some reason I was under the impression this thing could output sdpif optical. couldnt get it to work, tried both outputs and the retasking input, no luck. maybe I was wrong about optical out.

the fan lighting up doesnt really matter lol since you cant see the light from the back. It would be cool if we could see the light through the heatsink in the back so the light in the fan is pretty useless and kinda just wasting power lol

After having my M11x for a day, I am sad to stay I still haven't played any games on it except just one...Torchlight...running off the integrated graphics. haha . Runs great at max settings at that too.

I am downloading a bunch of stuff off of steam, though. Definately will give it the gaming rounds this weekend. So far I have liked the size and quickness of it all. And call me crazy, I even like the weight to it. Does not feel cheap at all. My LCD screen does not have a gap at the top either like some have reported.

On the negative side of things though, I do have an issue so far. The hinge on the right side of LCD screen gives out a squeek when I turn the LCD in wide angles. After I give the laptop its thorough gaming, software, and hardware rounds this weekend, I'll definately be giving Dell a call about it.

Edit: Hmm, just read that someone's right hinge broke right off and another person's right hinge is squeeking like mine. That doesn't sound good.

all these reports of people having problems with their M11x's, from loud fans, breaking hinges, gaps in construction, and other problems really have me glad i held out on ordering one. from what i understand dell's customer service and computer technicians really aren't much better than back in the day when i owned an XPS M1330. god that was nightmare.

It could all be a bad coincidence but myself and 2 people having right hinge problems (and with one of those breaking off entirely) might point to a defect in this short amount of time.

I wonder if it is just a piece that can be replaced by itself or if it is part of the LCD top.

    The issues with the m11x:
    Some BSOD when overclocked.
Some can't turn of the fan.
Some screens don't really like the way they are put in and start moving.
Some right hing thingy will do the rice crispy thing and sometimes break off.
Some have some battery issues to.
    Some just don't like you.

Is there a m11x issue thread all ready?

If this little monster won't drop at least 100 euro's in price, I will hold off for a while.
I actually thought the price had dropped but I went in to the dell site for businesses, *#@$@ still 799 eurodollars for consumers.
€ 671 without the taxes looks so much better than the 799 with taxes.

    No happy day :(

@anyone that has it - question about the kabuto mat... do you use it to also clean the screen on the M11X? And if so, does it scratch the screen itself?

the kabuto was made with a topside cloth, really soft - it had the idea of cleaning the screen in mind. Just don't use the bottom side which has a rubberized feel to it. Yeah you'll be fine. Only complaint is the kabuto fits too well, that it leaves no room up top for the hinge to come down and close completely leaving a gap toward the front since the Kabuto is just barely too thick. Bummer.

UPDATE: I did have the problems listed below, but now MAME games play faster- not sure why. Even some games play fine with PSCX2. MAME is not GPU dependent, but the newer version of PCSX2 uses the GPU more than any other emulator.

MAME 3D games tested poorly on M11x- I am stunned.

Something is not adding up here. The M11x even when overclocked performs SLOWER than the UL50 clocked at 1.3ghz. Dead or Alive, Soul Calibur, NFL Blitz all are slower on the M11x.

The M11x is slower in all of my tests compared to two different computers clocked at 1.3ghz. I am very dissapointed and will probably be returning the M11x if I can not figure this out.

Please put this in perspective. The M11x overclocked (1.3 was even slower) is slower than two demo units at Best Buy that are both clocked at 1.3ghz and have a ton of Best Buy demo and security junk running in the background.

A clean, minimum processed, open M11x is about 10% to 15% slower. Same chipset, so does not make sense. I am completely stunned, since I expected the M11x to perform 23% better than the stock clocked UL's.

3D has nothing to do with it and I have tried both methods, including changing to "performance". This makes no sense at all. Especially considering all of the processes running on the Best Buy demo units.

MAME is my main baby. I feel like I have lost a puppy now, since figured the M11x would be the perfect MAME system. Should have been- something must be wrong, but have tested several times.

This is my first post-Dell Alienware order. It's been an eye opener. My guess is no. The delay does not mean they will fix these issues. The delay is incompetence, not an overwhelming desire for perfection!

I'm not exactly sure what material it is. It's a woven material, not the softest (on the outside at least) but it's nice. Lol nm I Just looked at the tag 97% polyester 3% polymide. It's soft but I wouldn't recommend using it to clean the screen, Maybe in emergencies but not often. It's not soft enough and with plastic you don't want to mess with the screen like that. The kabuto is MUCH softer.

btw it's not a mat, but a cheap sleeve for the laptop. I'm using it temporarily for transport inside a messenger bag to avoid scratches, but it's too slippery and thin for a pernament solution. I feel like if I held onto just the sleeve and laptop, it could slide out.

Did some quick searching but couldn't find anything:

Is there a way to have your AW detect your overall color in your background and change the light effects to that?

@j1246d - I think you have to use the command center to set the color options... It doesnt auto switch with your background colors. It's a manual thing
