Because the spec page for the AW 18 states PLS which is basically what IPS is.

    Or it did...

I just need/want an upgrade. It's for school as well as gaming. So is portability an issue to some rather than the 17? I never thought if consider it but 2099 for SLI and dual slots. Kind of hard to beat.

All of them have a noticeable improvement from what I can see, I'm just waiting on confirmation from a few techs about specifics and I'll post them in the opener.

I understand PLS is samsung made IPS, but these 3 letter never appear on any dell affiliated site/text/video.

It says laser engraved nameplate but when I ordered there was no option for this. What's going on?

Great stuff. I'm keen to know about this. Would be nice to have the option of ditching the reflective screens and going matte/anti-glare....

    Alienware 2013 Launch

Nameplates are not exactly customizable, they now include the laptop's model and a few specs like GPU and CPU.

Sold my Alienware m14x and pre-ordered a Razer Blade.

Maybe I will be back in this part of the forum one day.

    Until then, later gents.

Thanks , you guys shouldn't hide it in a blog post. Put it in the tech spec. :p

Using the 2649 option with 780m sli, just hit 3k w.o haggle /gift card. Similar config clevo is 2.5k. AW seem to be the clear winner.

There is a forum thread somewhere with the complete list. Quick search should bring it right up. ;)

Looks like I'll be waiting for the configuration options to be expanded before I even look at buying an Alienware 17. Only upgrades I want are the screen and 780m. Not all the extra Ram and crap. :(

FIY i just got a call from a dell sales guy, not sure how they got my number, but they offered me the alienware 14 the max out version with 3years warranty with accidental damage, with a14 inch backpack for 2600... so 500+ less than the website price...

I just cant justify buying this instead of the razer 17... =(

Thats a stupid answer... Since the blade is not aimed to compete with a 20lb 5min battery life system....

I think it will be fair to compare the razer with the 14" and both of them have the same video card

All these people talking about the razer blade crushing the aw14 and all doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Yes it is sleeker, but more expensive than a similarly spec'd aw14. The razer gives you nothing to customize except ssd size. Also, would like to see a real comparison in the hands of people as opposed to folks on "review" sites giving basic spec rundown and showing the laptops.

Same here man. From what Luis said it does not sound like they will though. 'Pre-made configurations are meant to help shorten the ETA on new orders, I don't think that will change much.' Typical corporate BS I'm afraid. Tell the customers it's for their benefit - truth it's cheaper and produces higher profit!

I was ready to order one as soon as they went up but apparently only chassis color available atm is silver? I absolutely must have nebula red or at least pure black, guess it's time to wait a bit more which I'm OK with, but maybe Mr. Luis could please let us know about the color options situation? Will they come in the future? One of the main reasons I wanted an AW for my next machine was that glorious nebula red coloring. There is no mention regarding the colors, could we please have some info on this?

+1, also I would like to see if Razer can claim to run Quad Core CPU, GPU, and RAM all at their full operating power at the same time. Plus if there is throttling due to thermals. Don't get me wrong, I love my Razer R1, but I wouldn't compare it to AW 17 even if the had the same GPU, Its not designed to do the same thing, I.E. game at full power with mobile option for AW and Game super mobile for Razer

Yes no IPS is a shame, especially since the 18" comes with such a nice screen. At least it looked that way with the video that had all 3 models in it, the PLS screen had great viewing angels and brightness.

I finally got a sales rep to give me a discount but lucky I checked this thread and saw the 2nd edit that the 17" screen was TN.

Ok I want the 17 Alienware, I am not a hardcore gamer but I want to game for the next few years. Dell is being a butt not letting me config. the base with a 780m, so, would the 770m be good enough for me?

Personally, I'm actually quite happy to see the demise of the glass/plexi covered screen, but each to their own. Not arsed about name plates either....shame there isn't a colour choice as I loved my Nebula Red. I imagine offering all kinds of options costs Dell a LOT of dough.....offering less does not, but also allows for better pricing. I was expecting to see 780m sli as a cost option of around $1200 - $1400, so it ain't all bad.

Whine away man, AW's USP's are gradually getting dumped by Dell. The nameplate was always a pain for them. Only offered in the US and Canada and I noticed that US/CA residents get their AW's from a central depot whereas the ROW gets them direct from the factory. I wonder if this was something to do with the etching? Now they can streamline distribution if this was the case...

I was just wondering this too. I was going to get the 1999.00 17 and upgrade the 770 to a 780 but for some reason that adds almost 3 weeks to the ship date. So would have gone with the 770. Then I saw that the 18 was SLI. I am not the most informed with GPUs but would 2 765m' be up to par with a 770?

edit: I would like that extra beef and inch in the laptop. (I want a desktop replacement) Would have to move the laptop like 2 times a month.)

2 765m's would perform better. But some games may not be optimised for multi GPUs.

So, that means that there is NO option of IPS or PLS screen AT ALL on the 17x, but AL panels are antiglare/non glossy? - what is the 3d screen? - matte/antiglare?

Only 14x has option of matte IPS but is not the same PLS panel as on the 18x?

No matte or anti-glare option on the 18x, but it IS a IPS/PLS panel? - if so, how reflective vs the R2?

All screens no longer come with glossy plexi covering? - they now have a more traditional edged bezel?

The way I see it, the 14 inch IPS panels are naturally matte and the 18 inch PLS ones are glossy. Seeing as now the plexi front has been eliminated, whatever finish on the panels will now show through.

So would a single 780 be better than multiple 765'? I'm under the impression that the dual is better. AND you can slap in two 780's down the road.

Well I think I saw that a 780 was around 2x the quality (not sure) but that a 765 depends on scaling and its safe to say you might have 1 gpu + 1 gpu = 1.5 again I am not an authority in gpu's
