    Looks like the UK site.

    Inc. Stevie.

They are probably changing the site around as they needed to edit the screen options. The 18 had a 400 nit TN panel listed which is obviously wrong.

    Getting an AW17.

Can any of you guys give any convincing reason why to get Windows 8 over Windows 7 or vice versa?

Keep win7. Windows 8 is for touch pad interface. It hard to get used to if you never used it before. Plus windows 7 is cheaper.

Could be, I got a reply today about that. Should be fixed soon.

Win 8 supports fast boot, around 8-10 second boot if you use an SSD.

Once you get used to the new start menu you'll find it much more convenient. (kinda like an improved spot light if you've ever used a mac)

Don't forget to purchase a US Alienware it needs to be taxed at point of purchase. Say New York would add 6.8% tax. This added over $500 to the price listed on the US site for a maxed out m18x. Once you put that price it the UK is not that much more. Don't get me wrong we still get screwed. To add to this we can't even get all the hardware in the UK. Why can we not even get an SSD option here?

I want to buy an m18x so bad and they are making it a nightmare to get what I want at a fair and marketable price.

I tried Windows 8, I really did (on my m17x r4). It simply doesn't work for a non touch computer. I put it on my x220 tablet, and it works great there, but for a standard keyboard/mouse setup, windows 8 is garbage.

I'm in Canada, and to be honest, I'm ok with the price. I bought my M14x for $1500.49 (bought 2 years warranty and a 1920 x 1080 screen upgrade). They taxed me $195.06 ($1695.55 in total). It not bad. I also got 100$ off.

You can also buy a SSD apart then instal it yourself. It a lot cheaper.

Get Windows 7. I used Windows 8 since December up until now and I'm switching back to Windows 7. I know that you can buy or download free mods to get that start orb or that aero glass thingy or the desktop gadgets but i'd rather have that as a regular default option than adding them mods and I still prefer windows 7 because it is just simpler, cleaner and just well tested.

Boot time does not matter because with a SATA3 SSD, you'll be at your desktop from cold boot in 15-25 sec and to use windows 8 just so you can get 8-10 sec boot is redundant because it's only several seconds and I never use fast start up on windows 8 since it messes up the time up timer and your shutdown isn't really a true shutdown but a hybrid shutdown and i'd rather have a real legit shutdown that really shutsdown and resets all timers and it refreshes everything.

Yeah, well Microsoft could have (and still can, in fact,) do something about that. They need to suck it up and admit they were not paying attention to customers like they did with the XBox One. Windows 8 is a crappy OS the way they provide it in standard form. I think it is superior to Windows 7 after I have tweaked the crud out of it, but that shouldn't be necessary. There's a chance to make a public statement about how you feel on this subject. Feel free to jump in and promote the idea of Microsoft learning to pay attention to customers and stop acting like Apple. Please be courteous and represent NBR in a positive manner.

    Windows and Office Storm Session

I think some of us lost hope. But, I haven't yet. There's always hope for an epiphany in Redmond. They just need to play musical chairs with some of the leadership team and stop acting stupid. Pretty simple task... just fix it and move on... try to learn from mistakes (i.e. WindowsME, Vista, etc.) and above all else, listen to customers and stop acting like Apple (giving us what you think we need).

FYI - This may be duplicate info but just in case:

I got a call from Dell and it seems the quality issues are with ALL new Alienware laptops. Not just the 18 as I read before. If anyone hears any different - please post. Otherwise that is the news I heard from customer care as of 06/25 1:34PM ET.

    Eh.

Windows 8.1 beta fixes nearly every problem it had. The return of the start menu, booting directly into the desktop, sizing and placing tiles, ect.

    Oh boy here we go.

I thought 8 was "ok" no where near as bad as Vista, just different. I'm getting the AW 17 with 8 so I can see how Windows 8.1 (blue) will be for free. I may downgrade to 7 again if it is super buggy (I have the disks for downgrade, but not upgrade).

I have a replacement for my M18XR2 coming as an 18. It has been in Pre-production for 2 days so far. US order. We shall see. According to Dell the screens for the M18XR2 were back ordered and delaying orders for over 2 months. They opted to cancel the replacement R2 and setup an 18 instead. Thank you Dell!!!!!

The Xbox team and the Windows teams are different sadly.

I'd bet the windows team has been in their current positions for years whereas the xbox teams are brand new. Thus the windows team is unwilling to admit defeat with how much effort they poured in.

All i've heard is that it boots to desktop now. They still didn't add a proper start button from what i've heard.

Why you would have offered a product that sold for billions of dollars and then change it inside out blows my mind. ( Oh snap. COD just came to mind -_-)

Question for those of you who managed to get a sizable discount for for the new AWs:

Were you placed on a business account instead of a consumer account in order to get the discount?

The reason I ask is that I just got an offer from a rep for the new AW17, almost %14 discount.. That is great and very much appreciated! :D

However, this apparently means that I no longer have a 'cooling off' period and cannot return the machine if I don't like it and get a refund. Meaning, the moment you open the box, it is yours and if you don't like it for whatever reason - tough, you have to keep it.

Does this sound right to you?

Nah, it's not a proper Start menu. It's a shortcut back to the crappy Modern UI Start screen tiled trash. But, let's get back on topic now. We have other threads for Windows 8 issues. Sorry for contributing to the off-topic bunny path. My bad.
No, it doesn't sound right. It sounds like misinformation, which is common coming from sales people. Unless they have a new policy, that is not true. If you are outside of the US, return policy can vary by country.

Hey, I hate to be the confirmer of bad news, but I just received a really weird phone call from Dell. The rep said that he was very sorry, but my order would be delayed due to LCD quality issues (so apparently is, indeed, not limited to UK, it also is affecting US). So I'm thinking, "Man, my EDD is July 25th and they know for sure it will be delayed past that???" The rep continued on to say that the new EDD was now....wait for it....July 25th....I said, "Ummm....the EDD has always been July 25th", and he just ignored me and went on to say that Dell would be sending me a $100 coupon in my email as compensation for the delay!? I said, "umm, ok, thanks" and that was it. That's just really weird, and I am bummed that I won't be getting my 18 until, most likely, sometime in July...but, $100 + my $250 GC makes the purchase a little sweeter, so I won't yell and fuss too much.

Sounds totally wrong, dell has a 14 day return period.

I'd say its still on thread as it is W7 vs W8 for the new machines. Which is an AWESOME move by Dell. If they didn't do this it would be Sager hands down.

You can nitpick any little problem you may have with it. After 3 or so "problems" ;) (with repair attempts) they have to give you a full refund.

I hope you are right, as it turns out, the consumer return period in the UK is only 7 days anyway :(
just another example of the different service between the US and UK... Bah!

Even if there was no return period, everything should be OK, however given my nightmare experience with my M17X order (which I had to return), i'm not sure I can bring myself to purchase the AW17 with NO return period...
Blind Faith - I have none!

Can Louis possibly clear this up?

I think I made my choice. A 18 is a desktop replacement, an I play on the couch at times. While dual graphics would be nice, a single 780 can run most if not all on ultra in a 17. Well I guess 2 would just make sure I'd always run every game on ultra... Never mind... :( I hate trying to make up my mind.

It is extremely rare to get a refund and there is nothing that requires them to do that for US customers. System exchange/replacement is generally what happens if you get a lemon with multiple failed repair attempts. I think I have seen maybe 2 examples of a refund outside of the return period over the past 3 or 4 years. And, those examples were not easy transactions just for the asking. If a customer has a technical problem of a serious nature, if you don't return it within the return period and order a new machine, you pretty much own it for good. For most folks that is not a problem. If they did not want it they would not have ordered it in the first place. I have had a few system exchanges and I am an extremely happy Alienware owner. I would not want a refund, just a properly working system.

The other thing to consider is, if you get a great deal through negotiation, if you get a refund within the return period you may not be able negotiate another deal as good as the first one.

If anyone cares, another review for the AW 17: Alienware 17 Review - ComputerShopper.com

I think that the lower-than-average benchmark scores are because of Floptimus. I don't think any of these sites test it with the Intel GPU off.

The "professional" reviews are often poor and of limited value with respect to system performance. I think many of them have no idea how to do it right. They do offer value for their photos and anecdotal observations about build quality, etc.

Sounds like the 18's will not ship for a week at least due to the global LCD QC issues...hard to say on the 14's and 17's. For all of u who ordered one of those, I certainly will be hoping for this weekend! (But I won't hold my breath, :)

of course no gtx 780m at launch. Hope it has 3 2.5" caddy space 1x optical drive space for hdd and an m sata. Support for 5 SATA III devices would be great. And it's sad the performance has improved so small from sandy bridge. I think I'm sitting out this generation, I'll wait for the next gpu process shift. GTX 780m does profive a little boost to gtx 680. But I doubt I'm gonna touch the gaming machine this generation. I'm goin for a zenbok infinity to replace my ux32vd.

I know this is a newbie question but I am new to 3d on a laptop. I have an 80" 3d display at home and interested in the 3d M17. What would I need to play my library of 3d movies on the Alienware. I have a M14X now and love it so I want to go with this 3d laptop. Is the bluray player in the M17 3d compatible or is in just for games. Does one need glasses like my Sharp at home? Thanks in advance.

WRONG. If you see that im from the US its 21 days.

    Returns | Dell

We might as well average them! (So that we can do the whole tier 1 support thing.)

First off i'd be curious which M14X you have R1 or R2?

if you get the right movie player you should be able to watch 3D bluray movies. And yes you will need glasses, but they should come with the system, or they used to at least with the last two M17x revisions
