How's the waiting game treating you guys so far?

Btw I almost forgot, remember 3 of the issues on the keyboard on the older m14x r1/r2, m17x r3/r4 where when you close the top lid and when you open it, there are vertical oily marks that you have to wipe down which gets annoying and some even leave permanent scratches on the screen, and then the keyboard sometimes are not properly align and with some bumps?

these new keyboard on these new 14,17,18 will probably fix all those issues, what do you guys think?

it wasn't the keyboard that caused those type of problems, it was more because the rubber on the sides of the screen got worn down over time. With the new bezels though, It looks like that won't be a problem anymore. ;)

i loved how the old keys felt, hope im not too dissappointed in the new flat style

Does anyone know of any unboxing videos out there for the Alienware 17, I've seen some videos of the laptop but they're all in the dark or very bad lighting just want to see what it looks like in real life before purchasing it?

Even though their quotes keep reading OC, the reps keep saying that it's not OC.

Semi-related to the new machines - to me it looks like the 780M will be almost exactly the same speed as a desktop GTX 760, barring interference from optimus and other driver issues.

The GTX 760 has 1152 shaders at a boost clock of 1,032mhz, while the 780m has a full 1536 shaders at a boost clock of 797mhz, a difference of only 0.38%. So nearly identical shader performance.

On memory access, the 780m should perform 83% as well as the GTX 760, but it has the advantage of 4GB of vRAM instead of 2. So it should win when driving extremely large displays (not exactly the mo of a laptop GPU, though) or with huge textures. And of course when the architecture is shader bound, memory bandwidth won't matter - and even when it does, it's only 17%.

So take a look at the GTX 760 benchmarks, and hope that the mobile drivers catch up to the desktop ones!

Well, of course. But these are both stock :p

I've already heard of people getting +200mhz core on the 780m, and that brings it within striking distance of the GTX 680 (997mhz vs 1006mhz). I'm sure people will manage to get memory clocks of 6ghz, too, unless the larger memory chips run hotter than their desktop counterparts.

I was just told that the issue with my order was the config what bad. What was bad in the config you ask? IT WAS THE RESOURCE CD! They did not have the SKU added for the RESOURCE CD. So now I have had my order canceled for the 4th time... This time for an item that I will throw away almost immediately when I get the laptop. IF I EVEN GET THE LAPTOP. This whole process with Dell has been an absolute nightmare. I have never had such a hard time spending money.......

if you compare clock to clock, shaders to shaders then yes, but graphic card as a whole work together. you also have to look at bandwidth too =/

780m can probably overclock to a good 1000+ mhz, if not easily get to 950mhz. 780m is a lot more powerful than you think sir

Right, I know bandwidth matters - like I said above, the 780m should have 83% as much as the GTX780. If you mean processor bandwidth, then the 780m is equal to or better than the GTX760, as mxm3.0 is PCIe3.0 x16.

And yes, some people have already overclocked the 780m to 1000mhz with no voltage modifications.

I think the 780m is going to be a absolutely FANTASTIC card in the m17 and m18, with their cooling systems. Again, even at stock it is comparable with a desktop 760, which currently gets almost twice the FPS that the first 780m reviews posted, and I expect their performance to converge once drivers actually start rolling out.

I just got feed back from Dell, they told me that because that the Alienware Vindicator Backpack is not a Dell manufactured item they do not have a direct control to the production and supply. They say I should get it around the 26/07/2013. My laptop is estimated to be shipped the 19/07/2013. That a whole week without a proper backpack to carry my laptop around. Or maybe even more if the laptops got shipped sooner.

They told me that they could offer me a different backpack instead, but I don't know if I should just wait it out. Good things come to those who wait, right? Should I go for the older backpack, cause I'm kinda leaning toward the newer model.

If I were you - I would just concentrate on getting your laptop first. A proper back pack is a non issue at this point with all of the other issues that are going on with peoples orders. But if you wanna make it complicated that's your choice. All I know is my particular experience has been horrible and I will not make ANY changes once they get my order in production.

Just the single 780 available is Australia right now....

Would this be diy upgradeable ?

And can people please confirm what parts would be upgradeable?

    Obviously Ram is one.

So here is the scoop re my decision re whether to return the 17r4 and proceed with my order for the new 17 or to just keep the r4:

I did not go crazy configuring the r4. It came with i7-3630qm, 16 gb ram, gtx 660m, 256gb ssd, killer wireless, blu-ray, the basic 1600x900 glare prone screen and 2 years alienware support/accidental damage. That was priced at $2,160 pre-tax.

The new 17 I ordered was configured with 17-4800, 16 gb ram, gtx 780m, 256 ssd boot drive, 750 gb storage drive, blu-ray, 1920x1080 anti-glare hd screen and 4 years alienware support / accidental damage. That was priced at $3,149 pre-tax.

Dell is offering some cash and an extension of the service/accidental damage from 2 to 3 years to get me to keep the R4.

When the dust settles, the new 17 would cost me $1,190 more, for which I would be getting the upgraded processor, a much better gpu, a 750 gb storage drive in addition to a 256 ssd, a full hd anti-glare screen and a fourth year of support / accidental damage.

I am curious what you guys - the alienware experts - think about that value proposition.

These two machines are totally not comparable so for me, the config with the 1600x900 and gtx 660m are complete non-starters...It'd be easier to complate a fully loaded r4.

I agree that the two configurations are not comparable which is why it comes down not to whether the new 17 is a better configuratio (which it clearly is) but rather whether it is $1,190 better.

The fact that your getting a faster processor, an amazing gpu, a better screen, with 4 years of alien support and accidental damage. I would easily pay $1190 just for the gpu and processor alone. The other things are a bonus!!

You could just go in the config for the new 17 and add a few of these and see what the price difference would be separately...My gut feel is that you're getting little if any discount on the old machine actually. The different components on the new 17 spec are the most critical items.

I feel your pain. After four cancelled orders, a dozen phone calls and some online chat sessions, I finally have my order in production. I must've spent over 8 hours on the phone with them. Being transferred around was the worst part. It wasn't this hard when I bought my last Alienware in 2006. I hope I got a good deal and that they don't spit in it before shipping.

Hey Runna! I don't think your being fair when you put the 2 side by side. You could have told us a quote without the upgraded GPU and extra accidental service years. Not to mention the upgraded processor, which I see why you did that, because dell doesn't let you custom configure a laptop anymore-- and I'm sure they wouldn't allow you to downgrade it for a 200$ increase. :p There are sites you can customize a config and purchase through them instead, for things you may need more, as mentioned previously in the thread.

Also, 660M is an outdated GPU, so if your a gamer (and I'm sure you are otherwise why are you here?) then I suggest returning your old laptop. 770M is even better than 660M, and I bet 765 is too. I think the sales rep your talking to is trying to scam you, 1 year extra on the warranty isn't worth crap, he needs to step his game up-- or just let you return it... =_= Call someone else and talk to them for a return :)!

Complicating my return versus new issue is the fact that my new order (like others) has been cancelled. My God, Dell, this is insanity. It is bad enough to have a production and delivery lag, but cancelled orders and such is poor service to say the least.

I posted this in the Alienware M17x forum but I thought I would post it here too. Was checking on my order status of my new Alienware 17 this morning to discover it had been cancelled. Called Dell and spoke to a rep who informed me that due to a software "issue" on their end, my order had been cancelled in error. Waiting on an email confirming the rebooking, but I would log in and check to see if your order has been cancelled as well.

Just called in requesting an update on my "In production" status as i was curious about it since others have been cancelled and i was told that i should receieve a shipping update by monday.

Note: I've been in production since 6-20-13 and it has an expedite request on it so i don't know if others will be similar.

Phoned Dell regarding the cancellation of my order. Was told that the order was cancelled b/c it did not include the resource dvd. Got a new order number immediately, which reflects that the order is "in production". Delivery date bumped from July 22 to July 24 but they maintain it will be early.

Hello guys, I am new to the forums

I am a lady who likes to game :D. I wanted to share about my order as well:

Ordered M14 June 11 (thats when I first saw it on the website), The website said Approx shipping date is July 2. It was customized (non custom models ship faster). After my order was done, approx ship date was July 16. It was just confirmed on June 12 for 3 days, then in pre-production for like, 3 days, then went into production on June 18. . Now its June 27, its still in-production. I called, asked "what's the matter, can I get an exact information on my order", Dell rep said "sorry ma'am, we are trying to be be as fast as we can, let me check status of your order. Your order will be shipped somewhere in mid august at this stage." I said "why such delays" He replied "your order will be expedited" Then I asked another rep and he said Shipping date will be 22, and Delivery 26. That is currently the online information on Dell website. I live in Canada, btw, near US border.
