Ooh, didn't realize the manuals were online now. Just went through the 17 and they look surprisingly easy to work on coming from other laptops. Though I could've sworn an Alienware rep said removing the palm rest didn't require any screws in a video somewhere, I think it was the one from E3 where they had the system parts under a piece of plexiglass. Not a big deal though.

I ordered a 17 with upgraded screen and 780m at the end of June, EDD was July 26th but I checked the status today and it says it was shipped today and should be here on the 10th. So excited but sadly I am going to be at work all day.

So I have 2 options then. 1 is to see if they can get a new video card out to me or have them order a replacement machine. This is absolutely ridiculous!

    That totally blows.

I must confess, though, that my first thought was "Gee, I hope his replacement unit does not bump my order!"

I'm so ashamed (sorta) of my selfishness...

They're going to attempt to fix it multiple times before a replacement is even considered.

    Good luck.

I live in the US, I placed my order literally like 5 minutes before 9:00 EST on the 11th, which I think was right around time the site was updated for US orders (I could be wrong), I also didn't receive any discounts and ordered straight through the site. Within the US, Dallas, Texas to be precise.

Yup, you're getting there. Good job... keep going. You've come a long way in one day, but there's lots more where that came from. You'll have those MSI and Clevo reviews looking like they were done by noobs pretty soon.

Here is a really bad MSI 780M score for the haters to chew on... http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/6776977
(and there's lots more where that one came from if you search results on the Futuremark web site)

And another MSI 780M score almost exactly the same as yours... http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/6759006

The sky is not falling and there's not a "Dell problem" as some suggested. New car bugs, that's all. ;)

Mr Fox, with all due respect, 7200 in GPU points you list up is not bad 3dmark score. It is 200 lower than it should be, but its not the gigantic difference we saw with Alienware 17, 6000 vs 7500 points.

7003 GPU points he scored above is still too low. Also, what do he put behind tweaking? Is it overclocked? Did he mask the horrible 3Dmark score by doing the usual cheating to fool 3dmark?

I was not referring to the 7200 score as being bad. It was the one in the 3000 range. There are 2 links. Unless I accidentally pasted the wrong one, you'll find one is average and the other is abnormally low... much lower than Imarik's initial attempts. There are quite a few MSI 780M 3DMark11 runs that are terrible, but nobody is talking about them. Only the ones from the review are mentioned, either because the review information is accepted on face value as representative of "normal" or they are oblivious to how many raunchy 780M runs have been posted by MSI 780M users. It's the chicken little sky is falling thing going on here in this thread over a new product and an inexperienced user and it's pretty silly. The poor MSI runs that are posted could be reflections of the same.

The point is everyone jumped to conclusions and assumed something was wrong. There are not any 3DMark11 cheats that I know of that let you get a "validated" score and I have been riding in this rodeo for a while now. If I don't know of any cheats that let you get a valid score, then I suspect noobs don't either. I found his run through the Futuremark search feature and it's valid. Until the "professional" reviewers start providing links to the Futuremark web site so we can see their results and validate the integrity of what they publish, I question their validity. I tend to believe that they publish what they want us to see, and they didn't tell us everything. The best reviews are the ones we find in forums like this and the Furturemark database, not what gets metered and spoon fed to us by "professionals" that are as fallible as the rest of us.

Look at the orange bar in the graph for the screen shot posted. That's what is typical compared to submissions with the same GPU. His was in the bar with the most results (208 results), so I think it is more exemplary of the norm.

The other thing is, the out-of-box experience is irrelevant for true enthusiasts. What it does today matters little compared to what it is going to do when we (enthusiasts) get done with it. We see similar things play out with each GPU refresh. "What's wrong with Alienware" LOL. Then before long it is the Alienware machines that are kicking booty and taking names, and those that had better stock results don't look as good any more. The trolls and haters find something else to criticize because that doesn't work any more. ;)

I can tell you why you found bad ones run on MSI: pau1ow. He tested a GTX 780M without GPU Boost in the GT60. He scored everything from 6800 to 7000 in the beginning before me and some other reacted and told him that was not correct score. After that he found out that GPU Boost was missing. ;)
See the thread here for yourself if you don`t believe me: http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi/719363-review-msi-gt60-w-gtx-780m-4gb-gddr5-3.html

As for GT70, it score 7427 in GPU Points in 3DMark11 ( check here), a tiny bit lower than Dell and Clevo like usual. So yes, 7000 or 6000 points is not normal for the new Alienware`s. Reborn2013 have installed a GTX 780M inside his R4, and he had way higher than 6000 points. Which makes me wonder what is wrong with the new machines. 6000 points is what GTX 680M score

Noticed that 3000 score right now. LOL., obviously something very wrong and something that is not typical for any brand :D

You're still missing the point. This is all pole vaulting over mouse poop. We can pass judgment on brands 6 months from now. Right now it's wasted energy and hysteria.

Go search the Futuremark web site and tell me how many low scores were pau1ow. I doubt you will find all of the 208 in the typical bar are his runs, and they are not all MSI. 780M is a new product and there will be mixed results.

Reborn is not a noob with a new machine. Reborn's scores were even lower than 680M when he started tinkering with his Clevo 780M. They were terrible with a stock vBIOS. Others, including Riri-Fifi are still running benchmarks that look more like an average 680M than a Clevo 780M. In fact, neither has any benchmark runs with 780M that are as good as my 680M benchmark results.

Yes, though you might need to re-register it. The key is valid though, so it will work fine - re-registration would involve an automated phone call.

I've used the same key ~8 times (all in the same laptop though), and no issues so far.

Nope, Reborn doesn't have a system with Optimus. (Did you mean to say Enduro, or is that a dig at AMD, LOL?)

It's too early to pass judgment on any brand right now. I think they all suck compared to where they will be in a few months, and they should all end up being similar with a few outstanding examples to aspire to. What we see today is going to be irrelevant very soon.

    --Edit-- You mentioned reborn here.

That is from the Alienware 17 thread, not reborn. You can see I quoted Nyceis.

He tested without Optimus, got much better result than stock driver with Optimus. So either it was the 311.48 drivers messing up, or it is Optimus. Same thing that happend with Clevo and Enduro.

For the record... NVIDIA problems are typically vBIOS more than driver. Reborn has no Optimus and with a stock vBIOS his benchmarks are worse than 680M. NVIDIA cards all underperform with a stock vBIOS.... 580M, 675M, 680M and 780M, and even desktop Titan... all suck with a stock vBIOS.

It's sort of off-topic, but it started from a launch customer observation. So, it kind of is on topic at the same time. :D

I agree conceptually. If there is more discussion, let's take it to the M17x or M18x benchmark threads, depending on whether it is single or dual GPU.

So my order shipped today and so today i was supposed to receive my discounts from previous issues.
    I was supposed to get
    10% off the order
    $75 off for almost cancelling
    $70 Dell GC

    They ended up giving me:
$150 Dollar refund back on my method of purchase which was 10%
a $150 dollar Gift Card instead of the other 2.
I also spoke to someone over live chat today who said they would process the $70 dollar gift card
I am also unsure if i still get the 5% DPA Gift Card automatically of it it needs to be processed.

If it works out and they made mistakes i'll end up with $150 cash back, and almost $275 in Gift Cards.
    Wowerz.

Not bad Kevin, I got a solid 11% discount with the gtx 765m and fhd ips display upgrade and came out to $1,590 including tax and only paid $1,420 so it's a solid 10-11% discount. I could have gotten more discount like when I had my m11x r3 and m14x r2 where I got 25% discount but I didn't want to wait any longer and i'd take the 10% discount since it seem fair.
