True true. The way I see it is if you're spending thousands of dollars why not spend an extra $100 for double the ram and some future proofing?
-
-
I maxed out my config for the 14 with the base 1080p, so 16gb, 4700MQ, 765m gpu, 256 SSD+ 750 GB, $1899
I also think 16gb is good for future proofing -
I spent 1399. Couldn't justify 100 usd more for another 8GB of RAM. I mean if you are spending 4-5k sureeeee. Considering you can buy 16-24GB of ram for 100 USD i can upgrade it later if i want
WHY ARE THESE FORUMS SO SLOW LOADING?! -

Everything's perfectly fine on this side. Check your internet speeds and change the forum layout to vB4 Default Style (lower left corner on any page). -
My internet is fine, in fact im at work on a corporate T1 connection lol. Works like this at home too. Takes 30 seconds sometimes just to quote someone. IE why i had 2 posts on the last page. I'm not sure what i am supposed to click.
35ping, 84MBPS Down, 11MBPS UP and it took me 17 seconds from clicking edit for it to display. -

Has anyone gotten past pre production yet?
-
Just i spoke with rep and alienware now calling "NEW ALIENWARE" not r3 r5 r4 hehehe

Looks like it's indeed triple heatpipe for the GTX 780M. At least on the AW 17. The CPU only has dual heatpipes though.
The AW 18 should have the same triple heatpipes too. -
They are Indian and quoting what is written on the website as told by their managers. It looks like Dell took a page out of Apples book.

This pretty much sums up the UK in a short sentence.
I'll probably end up getting my brother to buy mine (he lives in Canada), check it to make sure everything is alright, then bring it over when he comes to visit. Then pray nothing goes wrong after that...

I know that living in the UK is expensive, especially when it comes to AW. However, I spec'd up a loaded M18xR2 and an M18xR3 - the R3 was a fair bit cheaper, which kinda surprised me....I was expecting it to cost more, like for like.
-
Yeah I tried that too. Its like the 680m in SLI costs more than the 780m in SLI.

Wanted to call out that we updated the OP with links to side by side comparison charts for each model. Take a look!

On the side by side comparison. the 18 is listed with single gpu's too. It also shows 2 screen types. It lists Killer wireless options for all too.
-
The new comparison tables have spawned more questions:
What is the Killer 1420 and 1430? They aren't announced by Bigfoot yet so is this a accidental leak/reveal?
The WirelessHD is listed as Sibeam WiHD Wigig. Could we have a bit more info on this? I know the Wigig is available on the Precision systems but allowed for more than just display options. -
JUST PUCHASED!!!!
Managed to get $125 off plus a $200 gift card (they gave me the better gift card over the standard 5% b/c of student status).
So I got the M17 with 280m, upgraded screen, and 16GB all for a total of $2,239 with tax included.
Did I do alright? Hope this was pretty good over a base M18 (worried about weight)........

Full specs on the Alienware 14: here Short answer 2 HDD's and 1 mSata
Alienware 17: here up to 3 HDD's 1 mSata (3 if no ODD)
Alienware 18: here up to 3 HDD's 1 mSata (3 if no ODD)
From my memory, it can take a couple of days to get out of Pre-Production. That is completely normal.
Alienware 14
Alienware 17
Alienware 18
New design, new codenames. -
Can you answer the other questions above? What's with all the Killer options and screen options and single GPU on the 18 in the comparison tables? I never saw any options for them when ordering.
-

Also, UK site has the panel listed as 400nit - 1st post says 350nit....which one is it, and are there two types of display for the Alienware 18 (see, what I did there?.....correct naming LOL)
-
i really cant make me mind up which i want. M14 with 765m gpu which is more in my budget or a m18 with SLI thats a way lot more. descisions decisions.
Saying that tho i surpose if i sell my MSI GE70 for £500 that would help. Ive got £800 saved at the moment. Advice needed peeps!! -
Lots of people are mentioning $100 off. There is a coupon code you can apply to your cart for this: V5RJ5XGR9XFCW
Works for any laptop over $999. -
Okay so, the 765 and 770 will run games like battlefield and company of hero's, as well as oblivion at high graphics right?
-
ThatOldGuy Notebook Virtuoso
Yes, and either can run Oblivion at ultra with hi-res texture pack -
So does the AW 14 come with a 180W brick with the GTX 765m? It states to different bricks for the AW 14 on the side by side. On my order it says a 150W though. 1

Has anyone noticed the new 17 and 18I has the same battery, an 8 cell 86 wh battery? The old m17x had a 9 cell 90wh and the m18x had a 12 cell 96 wh. That's why the battery life on the new models Sucks. What is dell thinking with all these corner cutting. Also I noticed, along with taking away the alien head power button they took away the cool top right media control buttons on the keyboard bezel. What the hell?
Sent from my SPH-L900 using Tapatalk 2 -
Well that tells me enough right there. Haha
-
I'm more pissed over the missing media buttons than the slightly smaller battery. Looks like I'll be mapping the macro keys to play/pause, fast forward, volume up and volume down...

No need to prey, dell's warranty is fully transferable between countries where the model is sold so you can buy anywhere. Simple web form to transfer
I was very popular when regularly travelling between Brazil and the US

Here's an in depth look at the Alienware 18!
Alienware 18 Gaming Laptop with Intel Haswell, Nvidia Geforce - YouTube -
Hey satan thats one serious rig you have ordered, and a serious price aswell. Congrats
-
looking ahead, any guesses as to what the next release is going to be called? Alienware 14/17/18 r2? that could get confusing...especially for parents buying presents on ebay.
-
It says it will ship in the middle of July...is that true? I'm leaving for a trip July 8th
-
most people are getting the same shipment dates so more than likely yes.
-
Mine says July 18th and it's in pre-production. For those that don't know what that means it means that they are getting all the parts and everything they need ready.
Thanks! I know I'll never use even a 1/4 of that ram but for $150 why not? Maybe I'll land a job a Pixar one day and it will come in handy lol. -
The new Vindicator backpacks are kick@$$!! How soon can I expect them to show up on Amazon at a sub-$100 price?
-
This makes me ponder if they have all the parts yet. Surely they could have started some systems by now.
-
I thought about whether or not the AW 17 or 14, and I remembered: HDMI In/Out. I'm sold.
-
I'm sure they have the parts. They're probably backed up from the 2012 model sale. When I ordered my last one it took a few days to get out of pre-production, that was 2 months ago.
-
I said HDMI IN/out
-
For the Alienware 18 comparison listed on the first page, it says:
18.4-inch WideFHD (1920 x 1080) WLED LCD BLK
18.4-inch FlatFHD (1920 x 1080) WLED LCD-Samsung (Post RTS)
What is the difference between those two? -
Samsung is a PLS, better color
-
That page is filled with mistakes like the 18 being available with one video card so who knows.
-
Also, for the AW 18 option that comes with 8GB DDR3 RAM, is it 1 x 8GB or 2 x 4GB?
In that case when I customize it, why does it not show up as an option?
Is the default 18.4" WLED FHD (1920 X 1080) TrueLife Display the Samsung IPS panel? Can any Dell rep confirm this? -
The site states the RAM comes in Dual Channel meaning 2x4.
Some people have gotten Quotes stating it comes with the TN panel instead of the IPS panel. Hard to say anything right now. Not sure what the sales reps will know is true and we don't have them to talk to tech support. -
Hello everyone, this is my first post.
I wanted to get some opinions on the Specs/Display vs price. I think I negotiated pretty good (discounted at a little over $500. I didn't even think prices were negotiable until I saw this thread) Considering it is a new system (total price before tax a little over 2,550.
Alienware 17.3" 120Hz WLED FHD (1920 x 1080) TrueLife Display w/3D Bundle (Is the 3D any good?)
Overclocked 4th Gen i7-4900MQ (up to 4.0GHz w/ Turbo Boost)
NVIDIA 780M with 4GB GDDR5
750GB (7,200 RPM) + 64GB mSATA SSD
16GB RAM
Blu-ray Drive
Windows 8 Pro
I was thinking about the 18" but size was somewhat important and figured the 3D feature might be good. Any thoughts? -
3D Is dying again. ESPN just announced they are killing 3D broadcasts later this year. Roll with the 18. See if the same rep can help you out with that. You'll get a better screen( Better colors) and better performance. -
Avoid 3D like the plague. Go for the 18 if you can.

i noticed that they removed the SPDIF-out. I really liked it as I use it all the time.
