Just when I thought this wouldn't happen to me :( . The crack must have happened today because this morning when I opened the lid it was fine.

You can't see it very well in the pic but where the crack is, something on the inside has actually pushed the exterior of the casing out..
I'll call AW in a bit but I don't really want to ship it now just before GTA IV is due to come out  . I think the other cracks I've seen were larger so I think I'll keep the lid opened for now so it doesn't expand but I should get it replaced under warranty I hope?

I remember years back when the hinge on my Toshiba Satellite broke, leaving the LCD panel flopping about. That was two laptops ago. Since then, I vowed I'd never close the lid of my laptop unless I needed to -- which amounts to packing the machine up for transport; a once per week affair. As a result of this practice, the hinges on my laptops remain firm and relatively unworked for years.

Sorry to hear about your trouble, man. Hope you get it resolved before it turns into a bigger problem.

    I cancelled my order.

Was going to get this with a 9800m GT and then swap my parts from the FX to this. But these hinge issues spooked me.

Reminds me of the Apple TiBook.

Sorry to hear about the hinge Crystak.

I've had a quick look through the forum but can't find any offical word from AW about this. Do we really have to just accept our hinges will snap and bits of our laptops will spill out? If this happens to mine after my 12 month warranty period I'm going to have to fork out for repairs on a £1600 laptop. Surely not?

Actually, AW has been surprising lenient lately about dealing with hinge issue cases. Just give Roswell a call and see if you can get your case replaced. Several people here have been able to get their cases replaced, so I'm sure you might be able to get yours replaced as well.

What about UK owners ? This is really freaking me out now as well. I don't realy open/close it too often so I guess the problem would only be delayed right ?

lol, it's not a good way to delay the problem by not open/close a laptop.

A laptop should be designed to open/close 4 or 5 times a day.

If you're living in the UK, you should be able to get your case replaced as well if you ever run into it. Mappy, a user here from the UK had his case replaced and in fact, in 8 days. The turnaround date varies between person to person but 8 days is actually pretty fast.

Frankly replacing the case should be the least they do, even if it's not under warranty any more. I think we're all agreed that we didn't pay this much for a laptop with such poor build quality that the case splits leaving wires and plastic literally hanging out after only a few months of use. To be honest replacing a clealry defective chassis with another defective chassis is no compensation or solution.

I wonder why do they use the exact hinge used by other brand laptops like ASUS A8j? This is exactly what I had before, the cracks the pattern etc...is it because it's cheaper to build? guess so or they might as well switch to metal hinge. This is not a good sign, although my other friends who own the laptop haven't have this issue yet. So I'm looking forward to my new m15x, hopefully there is a solution which don't totally rely on AW end to fix.

Aye, but I think it's an exaggeration to suggest that all chassis' are defective. Now I'm not saying that there are any different versions/models of the chassis, but I think it's fair to say that this issue is not going to happen to everyone who has an m15x.

That's true, but you can't deny the build quality is really poor for such an expensive laptop. I can feel how weak and flimsy the hinge area is and it ****** me off. Lol

    And I won't deny that. =)

I would have been nice if the build quality was better, but I mean, I'm fairly satisfied with it as it is. Haven't had any problems for the past 4 (going on 5) months with it.

Turned my laptop around, and noticed a very small gap there. No real cause for worry, but then tried the DIY fix at the bottom right. The screw was not even in there tight! I put it back together, but the gap is still there. Will post a pic in a while

Well I did contact them and they were so surprised they couldn't believe it (I love the french guy) and said it would "most likely be covered under warranty" and that I don't have to send it in straight away.

Nofate, I got some white plastic coming out as well; give them a call, they have to do something about it, we're both in EU.

Yeah, if this does happen to me in the UK then would it be possible to change to a Skullcap ? I prefer the Ripley frankly but it seems that there haven't been any cracks with the Skullcap reported so far (someone mentioned this in another thread). Skullcaps been out for 2-3 months now and hinge cracking has been seen within 1-2 months in some cases with Ripley so, the Skullcaps have had enough time to show similar defects if present within this timeframe.

I actually got a crack I noticed a few weeks ago near the hinge and asked them if it was covered and they said yes... that it was no problem. I haven't sent mine in yet because of a project for school I'm doing on mine... but I'll be sending it in the end of this coming week or the beginning of the next.

Thankfully I live in Florida so it takes only a day or so to get there and the same way back.

For the record, I don't think this is the biggest deal. I had a macbookpro that was made of metal and I got gaps and whatnot near the USB ports. I also had a toshiba that had a lot of design problems (the keys broke and fell off despite being gentle with it).

I'd say more than 25. Mine is much worse than any of these pictures. I've had it about 4 months. Use it every day to and from work and thats probably why it broke through so much use, but on a 5k product...come on. I hope I get a full refund as I will never buy any of there products again.

I personally don't recall denying it, but I still don't believe it will happen to everyone-- nor will I believe that they would do anything extensive to prevent it completely. It's way too late in the year to modify the chassis and I think the best they can do at the moment is to replace the chassis if the hinges ever break or reinforce it with some type of bonding material (ie. glue).

I think I have argued enough about this, but if they were to do anything about this, it would be to revamp their 15.4" notebook (putting into consideration the complaints and flaws of the m15x) and creatively destroy the m15x.

ring technical support NOW! and explain to them. UK Freephone: 0800-279 9751
if it says that it has already left AW then it is already in the hands of DHL
i dont think dhl will stop the delivery to wherever it is going but AW can contact them and stop it.
