i dont know why AW doesn't ban their own product responsibly - they know their hinges are giving them bad name. most companies would have a product recall to save face and seen in public as good business practise.
Not aw they dont even care, they will just keep on selling the computers with bad hinges hoping that it wouldnt happen.
I always feel bad for people that had suffered this as a consequence but there are a few handful of people on here boasting it will never happen to them because they baby their computer with kindness and tender loving care - they actually really believe the hinges will never break on them.
Anyway i hope you fix it soon.

Time to bring out a new 15 without the issues.

First of all i would just like to thank you for even reading this post as i am a noobie on this forum.
But i've been considering getting myself a m15x for my 1st laptop but after reading all these "horror" stories i've taken a step back. Like do you think that if i wait maybe a month or so they will have addressed this problem or do you think i would be better off just going to another brand. I really liked just the overall design of the laptop and just how the AlienFX thing is, but i dont want to spend about $2,000 just to have it break apart on me after 2 months. any advice guys? -
i mean some people dont have it happen some do the computer is amazing and nice just poor design only way i can tell you is the computer is a good computer but yes it does have a design flaw ...s ound familar...its your call people have said they fixed it etc i just got a m17 better gaming and cheaper and newer parts

I rang to the dhl and they said I'll have my laptop back on wednesday.I hopy everything will be fix and no more broken hinge.
-
Are most of these hinge cases still early adopters or are the more recent owners starting to have problems. if its still only early adopters then i might take roswell's word for it. -
it's a known issue, call Alienware tech support, explain the problem, mention you know it's a known issue, and then you'll need to send it in to have it fixed. Same on UK.
-
So I have high hopes that they are telling the truth about the reinforcement on the hinges. -
Just sent mine out after nearly a month of the issue.
CS said they will call and let me know if they can change it to skullcap. She added that they usually dont change it, but they can try to put in a request since I've had it since Decembershhhh!
Hoping for the best -
good luck Konig, when I asked them "Can I switch to skullcap?" they denied
-
Does the entire issue disappear with skullcap?
-
nope. but some people think it looks cooler

Hey guys I just want to say that I just got my m15x back from repair depot for the hinge breaking apart problem and it appears that alienware did a good job fixing it. According to the online invoice they replaced the two hinges, and I can't tell if they replaced the plastic cover, but anyways now it is fixed and the screen has barely any creaking at all. I have to listen real hard to hear it. I wanna give Alienware a good rep for this, and the people from support were very friendly when I had to explain the issue to them and offered to fix it w/o question.
-
That's great to hear rifle shot! Mine creaks quite a bit when closing but I hope it won't be anything serious and it is always nice to hear god stories about customer service when a problem does occur since I have myself covered for 3 years.

Just an update - DHL SUCKS! they sent my shipment back to me because of some "missing" documents. When they bought it back, I showed them that I had sent ALL the required papers and certificates. But apparently, these guys cannot use the same AWB now. Turns out I have to wait till Monday evening to get it picked, another day for Customs clearance, and then 2 business days for it to reach AW.

Hello,I want to say that I got my laptop back(finally) after 61 days. All chassis has been replaced.Hinge is fine however it's look like half-baked and I have little scratch(I'll put some pic soon). The chassis looks very good everything fit, there is almost no creaking.I don't now how but the volume quick touch is very very sensitive now, I can say that it works perfect now. It's look that AW did a good job but who knows for how long it will be enough...
EDIT: AW didn't fix a media reader, it is still use CPU on 100% when I read the memory card
Hire is my pic:

Bets of luck with your laptopnow -
Wow , 61 days seems exessive. I purchased 2 m15x's from ebay, one was in perfect condition and 1 had some scratches on the lid and base and had a (french canadian keyboard). So I ordered a new lid a new base and an american keyboard and replaced it all. Replacing the lid required removing the base and the lcd and basically disconnecting practically everything. It took me the better part of 2 hours to replace the lid, base and put in the new keyboard. It isn't hard to do just gota pay attention to what your doing. Just as a fyi its not the hinges that break , I noticed as i replaced my lid the hinges are attached to the lid via screws that screw into a plastic piece, this plastic piece seems to crumble (good thing i changed my lid as the palstic piece was falling apart). The hinges themselves are solid metal the screw into the frame under the base and the other side attaches to the lid via a whitish clearish plastic piece that is attached to the lid. Something that took me 2 hours to do (and i have never opened up a laptop before but i have been builidng my own pc's for the last 12 years) shouldnt take 61 days to turn around.

My m15x just reached the mothership - 23.1.09. Lets see how long they take to send it back to me.
As a sidenote, I'm very optimistic about the Skullcap now. Spoke to an Alienware rep, and had an email confirmation. Will wait and see what happens. -
61 days man you have the patenince of a snail. i had to wait 30 days for mine to be shipped
-
don't tell anything,I was so pis... off.Everytime when I call them they always say. "it should be ship in next week"
-
they did the same thing to me should ship tommorw or by the end of the week. it was in phase 6 for 2 1/2 weeks i sent a email threatened to cancel and it shipped later that night crazy huh
-
Just got confirmation that my laptop was shipped back yesterday! Reached them on Friday, and they sent it out on Tuesday! Is this case one of their fastest turnarounds?
Way to go Alienware!!
As a sidenote, they've changed it to Skullcap too WOOHOO
Just waiting for it to arrive, maybe early next week due to possible customs check. -
Its here!!
will post up pics in a couple of hours
Absolutely no creaking! -
holy crap! lol i know some angry m15x owners that wish it only took them that long instead of 61 days, 44 , 41 etc
good luck hope she lives a long time
-
They have really done a good job. Matter of fact, they have replaced the ENTIRE body, excluding the keyboard and the internals, and the sliding black panel underneath! beautiful service, I should say!
But their shipping department has messed up big time!
they have sent it back as documents, instead of a laptop. In doing so, I'm screwed!! I had submitted my original Bill of Entry to the customs department, and that is returned when the laptop comes back. But now, its not come the expected route, and hence they have avoided the customs officials altogether. Which means, I wont be able to receive my original documents, and worse still, I will have to probably pay import duty again (Rs 23000 or approx $470)! I'll speak this over with the AW customer service when they are in office in a couple of hours and see what comes of it. -
Did you send it to the UK or US service center ?
-
UK
Update: The customs sent me my documents yesterday, my assistant had forgotten to give them to me lol. So I'm safe for the moment. But anyways, DHL has seen the laptop inside the package, and have now started their own internal inquiry.
Oh No.. Crack Near The Hinge :(
