"Older" game titles that will or won't run smoothly on the M15x

Hey everyone. Just wondered if any of you have experienced issues with running the "older" games that hold a special place in your nostalgic heart.

One game that I am very curious about is one of my favourite titles... Grim Fandango by Lucasarts. Does anybody know if this runs okay on the M15x? (I will be getting Vista 32bit).

Also, Vampire: Bloodlines, and Clive Barker's Undying. Any issues with those?

(Also, can someone please quickly explain how Steam works? When I installed The Orange Box on a previous laptop, I was under the impression that any Steam-backed game you install will install to their online server, so it doesn't take up any space on your HDD, and so you can log into your account from any computer to play your games. Is it true that you can install any non-Steam-backed title to their server so that you can play that on the move too? It just seemed to me like you only install Steam to the HDD, and all the games install to the Steam server. Won't their servers crash at some point if we all start installing games with them??)

You buy licenses from Steam to play a given game... But, in order to play, you will need to download the game into your computer.

Regarding the old titles... Can't help you there.

It should be ok, Vista has not given me problems.
And there's always compatibility mode in case it doesn`t work :)

Vampire: Bloodlines you probably won't have a problem with. Vista is still based off of the old NT structure. It's basicly an updated version of XP, which was a hybrid of W2K and Windows ME... I know people who've played it on all three without problem. Clive Barker's Undying, i've never heard of. as for the retro classic Grim Fandango... wasn't that released back in the days of windows 95/98? so there might be some issues there, but there ARE compatability modes. simply right click on the exe file (the one that runs it) go to properties, and there's an entire tab for compatability. don't mess around too much with the settings, however, I've had some great successes with the compatability modes working with games.

Sweet! I so want to hear the line "Manny! I'm not your secretary" again in that strong New Jersey accent! (Grim Fandango)

Hey Cat, I had the orange box loaded in Vista Basic. I founs that once you've licensed you software, Steam remembers this, you can now install from the disk or download your games from Steam, this has the benefit of working without any disks in the drive to play...

I have HL2 backed up on my external drive, you can use the backup option from Steam, it saves the whole thing as a backup...

How about DS2 and DS2BW... Classics but lookk good still...

Oh. and Starcraft... I can't wait for Starcraft II

Not sure if this would work but I wonder if there any emulator that acts as a slower computer. I been playing everything from the first Super Mario Brothers to Super Mario 64 On my laptop right now. Other games are Sonic and knuckles. Most of the games are easy for child to play. Man I have My 5 year old nephew hook on super Mario 64. Because the words are easy to read and the controls are easy.

Haha, good taste in games. ;) I loved every single one of those titles. Clive Barker's Undying was such a great sleeper hit. It's a shame more people didn't get a chance to play it. Masquerade: Bloodlines was awesome and a good followup to Masquerade: Redemption which I loved, even if it was a bit different. Anyway, haven't seen those titles mentioned in awhile. I will probably try installing one of them myself to see how they run when my m15x gets here.

Masters of Orion was awesome! Damn, that's taking me back to my Ultima 1,2,3,4 and Autoduel days. Well, maybe not quite that far back, but I think that's around the time I was playing a lot of Bard's Tale. Good times, and MoR was definitely a great game.

@ Groove... Toreadors are the best! ;)

I was a big World of Darkness / Vampire fan back in the day. I used to write stories on the Hunter-net list for a solid year or so. :)

Oh, and if anyone uses Steam for online gaming, you'll have to add me when I get my M15x. I think my user name is The Nat.

I remember that Undying came with my copy of American McGee's Alice, but I never played it. Alice though, I loved, especially since Wal Mart let me buy it at 14. I don't think there will be any problems playing it, willl there?
