On December 26th I ordered an M17 which unfortunately as I'm told by Alienware will be delayed due to a bluetooth adapter being out of stock.
I decided to go with Alienware because I've always remembered them for having really high spec PC's. A lot of people have told me they're overpriced. I have to argue that point though. I really really love my iMac which to some is way overpriced. Though I know I paid for the extra quality and attention to detail, which is what I'm hoping I'll get with Alienware.
After browsing these forums for a few days it seems a lot of people are dissatisfied with Alienware and the M17 and I have to say that getting this computer is taking a REALLY long time. I'm sure I'll forgive them for the wait once I get it, but after reading on here, it sounds like a lot of people are having issues.
Is this something I should be concerned about? Can I really trust Alienware in terms of quality and if something does go wrong, will I get the service I need to rectify the problem.

in my expirience with the M17 i say you should cancel it and get the dell m1730 ive heard better things with that and that it has a better graphic card
-
There are a few people around which had a few issues and just spam it all over the place. Thats why it makes you believe that there are so many problems.
There are many people that are really happy with their M17 (im one of them) make sure you dont let the others cloud your judgement. -
mines perfect
-
I love mine. I had no problems so far.
-Well one problem -VISTA. -

Can you get M1730 cheaper than M17?

pardon me -
I hate betas
its bad enough i like to format every 1 month, imagine having to format in between for newer betas/final
-
Maybe you can check out the bay for it -
Should be soon, they are probably gonna release 3-4 different beta versions through out the year then hopefully the final on the beginning of 2010

all computers have problems (except my sager so far). if you are that worried dont forget you have the chance to test it and then send it back for a refund. only problem is the 15% rip off re stocking fee. -
My m17 has been perfect. The two best things I did and I would highly recommend, getting the 8.12 modded drivers, and make sure you put a spacer at the back of the notebook for increased ventallation. Other than those two points, I would highly recommend the m17. It packs alot of power for a stellar price compared to an nvidia based solution.

My only complaint has been Alienware's lack of information. I've bought 2 of these, one arrived, no problems, but we had to wait nearly 7 days past the estimated ship date. We were never told what was going on with the delay until we contacted them. Then we were told 5 different things depending on the rep we talked to.
The current laptop we've got on order was supposed to ship out 12/29. We called yesterday, and they don't have any idea why it wasn't shipped out, as it's been sitting in Phase 6 for 14 days. They promised us an ETA in our email last night, and low and behold no email this morning with any updated info. I'll be sitting on hold with them shortly to once again battle with the customer service group to find out what the heck is actually going on.
Performance wise, once a few tweaks were in place (8.12 drivers, etc.), I haven't had any problems. -
If you check the posts closely you will see one person is saying similar things in three different threads

ok lets get stright to the point... he talking about the m17 not the m17x
the m17 is for the price amasing, not 1 bit overpriced,
unless you do what i had and max out everything, the ram and harddrive i think you can replace yourself for cheeper and it wont void the warrenty
the m17 is a extremely good build quailty, ( unless you live in canada for some reason,)
the price of the gfx cards are amasing compared to the nvidia ones.
what you pay with the m17 is what you get, im really really chuffed with mine considering my 4870x2 system, with a core2quad 2.4 4gbs of ram computer only got 17000 in 3dmark o6, and this gets 14000,
the noise output is resonable, unlike the other notebooks which are noisey and get alot hotter, the only thing is the aleinsense and the finger print reader is buggy and slow as hell, disabled them stright away
apart from that its awsome, dont let people put you off,
remember you ONLY hear about bad experiences, thats what this forum is here for, help and support. and if your system is working fine you dont need help and support, the good experience people are just hiding in the shadows browsing -

Okay, thanks everybody! I have a feeling I'm going to really like this laptop and I won't have any issues, but right I'm really dissapointed with Alienware in terms of building it and getting it shipped out. I'm still on Phase 3 according to the status tracking site and I ordered it on December 26th. I understand its the holiday and a weekend but still, Phase 1 - 3 all has to do with payments. Your telling me it took that long? BS. I really hope my laptop isn't delayed though.
The first thing I'll do when it arrives is get the 8.12 drivers. I'll be sure to let everyone know if something goes wrong! Thanks a bunch everyone! -
i've used my notebook daily and kept it on for most of the day for over a year now, and i have not had any problems yet (except upgrading drivers... though it is my fault for that)
many people bash Alienware because it is a name brand, and many people go against name brand things beause it's a comforming way to be a "non-conformist". the m15x did have problems, and Alienware did address them, and many people got new laptops because of it, though, there are many people who had horrible experiences with Alienware.
for the most part, you hear problems from the people with problems. Alienware uses newer technology and ideas in their notebooks than i've seen in other manufacturers. there aren't many high performance ATI solutions in notebooks, so OCZ Whitebook / M17 is a big hit with technology that really hasn't been out before.
the m15x was one of the first gen 15 inch notebooks with the 8800m series, which is basically asking for lava to flow out of the vents. that said, there are most likely going to be problems, and Alienware was the one who had to experiment with them.
if you're worried about the M17, go to the Other Brands sub forum, and check out the OCZ threads. look a the OCZ Whitebook as it is the exact same thing as the M17. many people have given good reps for it. -
