So here's a new question... has anybody gotten on the phone with a AW salesperson and tried to get an older model, aka something not a part of the new product launch? To be honest, I like the styling better of the M17xR4 and M18xR2 better (not to mention the vastly better customization options), and I'm going to guess that all their previous inventory did not beam back up to the mothership once the 14, 17 and 18 were rolled out. Logic says that Alienware probably has a good many of the previous-gen systems nestled in their warehouses, just looking for good homes at a steep discount...

So, has anybody gotten on the horn and tried to get one? What happened? Enlighten us. Knowledge is power.

Why not just use the outlet with a discount coupon?

Probably because you can't customise an outlet machine, for starters. Whilst they can represent great value, they are not new, and if you are looking for 'new' & 'customisable', you can't do that on the websites any longer. I just noticed that the M18xR2 has been pulled from the UK site, was there the other day....RIP M18xR2. I don't know how far you would get with a telephone enquiry, but that would seem to be the only possible way (or live chat, maybe) of configuring one of the older machines....

I can see what they will be telling you: Those parts are going to be used for waranty, we cannot sell one of them. Maybe your best bet is to buy it in any AW re-sellers and build it up by yourself.

Also, I would imagine that the production lines are now in high gear for manufacture of the new models - throwing in a mix of old and new would only make for a whole plethora of manufacturing errors. I could see many problems arising from that....people getting wrong components because the production line staff (not wanting to belittle them) just grab 'their' bit, slap it in and on it goes to the next guy to 'slap' his bit in.....

I had an older model on order that was set to be delivered tomorrow. Yesterday I received a delay email so I'm not holding out much hope that I will get my original order for my 18x. I will note that when I did order mine on the 16th of May the only options I could change were OS and memory other then the standard additional peripherals and warranty stuff.

At-least in the US you can still order the 2012 Alienware Laptop models, there are separate entries for New models (gaming) and old (2012) models under laptop tab.

Aw Australia will still let you order om14xr2/m17xr4/m18xr2 but that is because they haven't offered new models yet.
