This has been posted several times in various threads, although admittedly not in the AW forums.

Check out the Asus forums or the gaming forums.

Incidentally, a clean install that was not overclocked hit 13K.

yep, this is old news. and fyi, AW might be the only company getting the HD4870 with GDDR5 (and not GDDR3)... ;)

I posted in this forum because my point is that A.W. should be the one coming out with the newest tech. It seems to me that there was always a small company beating A.W. to the punch but now one of the biggest players is doing it. :(

asus is not small they make more money then AW and they rushed theres out the door .. AW is getting ddr5 instead of ddr5 (better performance over first any day) also AW is smaller and they are developing them good. the asus has had many issues and the drivers witht them have been bad and buggy. So in the end the AW 4870's will pwn the asus oc'd 4850's

If you are referring to Clevo when saying small, well.... Clevo generated 62 million in sales in 2005, while Alienware generated 170 million. While AW did generate greater sales, Clevo isn't exactly a "small" company.

I've never known AW for being the first and foremost with the highest tech outside of the M15X being the first 15" with a 8800M GTX (admittedly with multiple issues and complaints).

As for GDDR5 in the ATI 4870s released for AW models, I can only say that it has been confirmed only by AW.

I didn't say asus was small. My post says they are one of the biggest players mr.moo

And Im not trying to slam A.W., I love mine, I just wish they could bring new tech to the game a litter sooner.

To be fair to Asus though, you should really look at the problems AW had with the M15X when they were released (and several months later).

Don't feel too bad, Rob 41. I'm sure AW/Dell is trying their best.

How much performance gain can one realistically expect from 4870 GDDR5 over GDDR3? 10-20 percent?

That's not realistic. That QX9300 is OCd to almost 4Ghz. 3DMark is a synthetic benchmark that can be manipulated in many ways. What do the 3870s score with a QX9300 running at ~4Ghz? I'm interested to know what it scores on an everyday basis, i.e, you fire it up and do a couple of runs. Not this extreme OC with even more FSB OC bullsh*t.

actually...for us people running 1440x900...i dont even see the need to upgrade from the 3870 to the 4870...am i right? unless you love benchmarking...the only games i see it helping is crysis and gta IV.....from what i see the 4870's get about 2000-2500 more in 3dmark06 over the 3870's....not too big of a deal for a synthetic benchmark

Well, you have to give Asus some respect for building a notebook that can OC a Quad Core mobile to almost 4ghz on air!

That's true; two 3870s is more than ample power to run games at 1440x900 with high settings. However, games like Crysis, GTA and a few others that require a lot of shader processing may require the power of the 48xx cards to play comfortably at high settings at that resolution.

But, regarding 3dmark06 and synthetics, the 48xx cards don't perform a lot better than the 38xx cards in 3dmark06. Matter of fact, the difference between a 4870x2 and a 3870x2 in 3dmark06 with the same CPU is only about 1000 in favor of the newer one. 3dmark Vantage is where the biggest difference lie mostly because it excersizes more features associated with the DX10 API. For example, my system gets a GPU score of around 6500 stock. the GPU score in Vantage from a W90vp is 9700 stock (and this is just the GDDR3 versions of the cards).

    Is this really true.
They overclocked a laptop cpu from 2.53Ghz to 3.95Ghz.
I am highly doubtful that these results are real.
That is a 57% overclock. That doesnt seem possible on a laptop cpu.

I'd just be happy with some good drivers to run ut3. I can't stand the studder in frames that ATI cards have.

    ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870
The performance should be in the regions between 8800M GTX and GTS and therefore modern games (2008) like Call of Duty 4, Crysis, or World in Conflict should be playable in medium to high details.

    ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870
The gaming performance of the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870 should be compareable to the desktop HD 4850 (a bit below) and therefore very good. The high amount of shaders and the 256 bit bus allows to run every DirectX 9 game in high resolutions and details. Demanding DirectX 10 games, like Crysis can be played with high details.
