Hello Guys its me again,
as you know i have the alienware m9750 with t7200 Processor (2ghz) dual 7950GTX and 2gb of ram, i removed Vista and installed XP everything went fine, i upgraded to SP3, ok i tried some games like COD4 and it run very smooth with a maximum Heat of 80c, i installed Bioshock and after 30 mins of playing i get a warning message from NHC saying that the CPU has reached above 95c , under Vista i never saw anything like this, it only started to happen under XP only, same problem goes with Gears of war. i checked device manager and there are a few identified base control things or something. i tried games like Stranglehold,C&C3:Kanes Wrath and they never go above 80c.
Thanks in forward

Did you configure Windows XP properly for dual-core?

How's it going brainer,
I've found that some games definitely get the computer hotter than others. I'm not sure if you have crysis, but when I run it, my gpu temp hits a max of 97 degrees celcius.
Oh... and by the way, the 174.16 drivers will actually make your system run hotter. -
ok i'm now back on vista.. when Gears of war ran @ 95c on XP at the same settings it runs now @ 81c under Vista
-
well now after testing its like Heat VS performance.. undre vista i'm getting like 40FPS average in gears of war at 81c temp, while in XP i get 64 average FPS with 95c temps :S will vista ever get better with SLI?...
-
hrm...that is very interesting brainer. I have to say that some driver versions more agressively underclock than others, so maybe that is why vista is cooler and slower.
Also SLI does seem to be getting better under vista, but it is still taking a while, and all the attention seems to be on the 8XXX series cards. So i dont really know about support for our 7950s. Can hope though right?
Personally I play games on both XP and Vista (Server2008) dual boot on my system, and the Server2008 is even 64bit. I dont notice any differences in performance either way while playing (on the same driver that is, 174.16 currently). So whatever you feel good with you should stick with and just have the piece of mind.
Last thought - I also thought that SP3 would fix all dual core issues. better investigate this one further....Chaz and ideas? -
the wierd thing is i'm using the same driver on XP and Vista... 174.60, in XP it runs with always 60+ FPSin gears with heats going up to 95c, under Vista i get somewhat 45 FPS maybe. and 81c or less heat :S

and btw. i'm actually looking for peace of mind, because this crap is starting to ruin my life really.

Hi brainer,
I know exactly how you feel. I wouldn't go so far as to say it's ruining your life....... it's only a comptuer. But I do understand the frustration. I cashed out 2,500 for mine, and by the time I put the additional memory in it, along with the second drive for a raid setup, I'm close to 3 grand. Unfortunately for me, I've been having several problems with mine, as you've read in some of my more frustrating posts. Currently, I'm having to run only one 8700 GT card being that my second card is suspected to be faulty. I was getting horrible performance with 2 cards in SLI. I wasn't even able to load the 174.16 driver properly with 2 cards....... You can imagine my frustration after putting that kind of money up....I realize that other people have put up well over 5 grand, so I suppose I'm not that bad off. But I can easily say that this is the most expensive computer I've ever purchased. Like most people, I figured that since it was a high class Alienware, it would be well worth the money. However, to tell you the honest truth, and Asus G1 gaming laptop performs far smoother than this thing ever will......I'm confident that is only a driver issue, but I did, as everyone else, pay for an improvement and not a downgrade.
In response to your heat problems, try applying artic silver to the system. This seems to be what everyone suggests. I've actually got a tube handy when my new set of graphics cards arrive. I know exactly what you're thinking....."Why should I have to make this thing work when it should just run out of the Box? What did I pay all that money for?" To be honest, you paid for a high name in the gaming industry. Alienware computers are still a type of barebone system, despite the fact that they've come a long way in their own case design. You can easily spot similarities between them and Sager and Ibuypower. I've actually had less issues with Ibuypower, but as with all barebone systems, there's ups and downs in success.
I know this isn't quite the piece of mind you're looking for. But you are going to have to work at this computer to make it work. If not, you may just want to return it. I'm contemplating returning mine if this new set of video cards doesn't cure it.
Good luck,
Gabe -
Well, i'm actually satsfied about my product, its just i suspect that the XP sold to me in where i live (Palestine) is a pirated version thats why it overheats..
-
To the best of my knowledge, Windows wouldn't cause your system to overheat....pirated or not. The fans are controlled by the BIOS of the system.
-
i'm not really sure about that, because when i installed XP many Base control devices were missing :S , and i actually think that this was the thing causing overheating. anyway i'm now on vista and cant go back to XP
thanks for help guys
