Hopefully i'm posting this in the right place.

OK guys, I've had my M17x R-1 for almost a year now. It was originally a graduation gift from my parents, and is my default laptop at college. Since my parents technically bought it, does this mean that official ownership is linked to them, even if the dell account it's registered with is under my name? Is there any easy way I can check this out? I'm asking this because every time I call technical support, they ask for my mom's information (which leads me to believe that she technically has ownership), and I don't want to have to deal with that down the road when I'm completely independent of my parents. Help is appreciated.

My second question pertains to extending my warranty. When i try to see the extend and upgrade warranty options, the site goes into a loop while trying to load my system information (the page refreshes over and over, maybe 50 times) before deciding that it can't find it. Does this mean I have to suck it up and actually call customer support? I hate calling customer support. I really just hope the site is broken.

    Thanks,

    Nick

It's very easy to transfer ownership.

Just get your Mum to ring Dell and it takes less then a minute to add your info on their system

If you want to do it yourself then it is still easy, but will take a few days before you get an answer from dell. Go to the dell website, then in the Black bar at the bottom of the Page click on "Warranty information" then on the Left hand side of the page in Blue, amost at the bottom you will see the "Warranty information" header the last headerunder this is "Ownership transfers" click on this and fill in the form, then wait for an answer

The online transfer works very well, I have used it to transfer to and from myself many times.

If you do the transfer from the actual computer online it is even quicker as it takes the service tag, and express service codes from the computer.

thanks guys. For some reason i was unsubscribed from this thread, so I haven't seen your replies. I guess I'll fill out the forms and see what a new warranty will cost me.

The basic warranty is 279 for 1yr, 413 for 2yrs. Its best to call a couple reps to get prices. I had one offer 2yr for 347, if you get it extended through tech service most of them dont know the prices.

Well it looks like I'm just going to have to call Dell about extending the warranty (i hate calling them). When I go to the website to see upgrade options, it goes into a loop while trying to find my system information and just refreshes the page over and over again. I'm not really sure why this is. It might be because my laptop is a replacement over my first system.

I do have another question. Should I wait to transfer ownership until after I extend the warranty, or should I transfer ownership now and then extend the warranty?

Also, when I call about the extending the warranty, I take it that I should call customer support?

Depends on whose paying for the warranty extension, if your extending it through one of your cards it shouldnt be an issue, if its paid through one of your parents cards you would have to get one of them to give the representitive the card #.

You can extend the warranty through technical support, just ask the person your talking to what the prices are. A 1 Year Basic Service Plan addition the laptop comes with cost me 279, 2 was 413, but ask the rep first.

I just went to the Dell site and did this and it said the transfer was successful?
Is this the entire answer from them or am I also waiting for an Email confirmation of some kind?

    Thanks
    Ed

So Dell actually called me today (well, my mom really) about extending my warranty. So my mom went ahead and paid for the whole thing, which was a big surprise. Anyways, I got a full 4-year service plan for $578.38. And they're also sending us a $75 gift card. I guess now I just need to transfer ownership before i go back to school.

Oh, trust me, I know! I am extremely grateful that she's doing this for me. There's no way I could have afforded that on my own.
