Don't forget that with the new Penryn processor you can squeeze out some extra battery too. I heard about a 16.5% increase (23-55 minutes.) I read about this it here... Linky

AW is already offering Penryn. I sense many early buyers are going to be angry.

Definitely some of them are going to be angry, but what's been has been done. They can always upgrade later on, which is a pain and very expensive.

very interesting link with those numbers i see its really not fair to compare the 5973 in a peryn form to a "theoretical lol" m17x based of a non penryn m15x.

i guess as soon as some one gets a penryn m15x in there hands we can start to see a clear picture of whats going on the m17x motherboard could be a hole new ball park as well.

So I asked to change my order. she said I could but the x9000 (I dont know about the other chips) will not be shipping out till mid March. and another 4 days to change my order. She said If I wanted it later, I could add it. No changes or anything. I could send it in and they would even do it. There is no way Im waiting another month. So. I will keep the orig. config.

That was my thought as well. I have waited this long, what is another few weeks for the latest technology. Although, they did not tell me the change would push back my order weeks. The sales rep. told me my order should still ship on time...I opted for the T9500 because I can't justify the added cost for the x9000. But that is me, good luck.

USA has the best waiting game.. no tears for you jelouse

i honestly don't think its THAT worth it.. the 45min increase in battery life in that test was only reflected in one test..... that was video encoding...
not to mention it was tested on laptops running on a different integrated gfx chipset.
who video encodes while on battery .. . pretty rare group of people lawl..

for normal use it prob be more like 5-7% and for gaming hardly any thing Kind of the same as turbo ram. ...

my main fear with my m15x order is true quadcore mobile .. seeing as the new 1033 chips out later this year only run at 2.2-3gigs i have a inkling that there will be a quadcore or 2 <_> /pray game designers don't make us all upgrade because the santa rosa will not be able to support them... then again a 3.2 gigs overclocked duel will prob be enough if i have to upgrade. :(
Cant wait to find out if the m15x can overclock the x9000 well.

Penryn is way better than the Santa Rosa refresh (Merom II so to speak) and it's well worth it. It will get you around 10% battery improvement and around 10% performance improvement. Heck, you can even see a 50% improvement with encoding (or something like that; read Anandtech's review of the Penryn line).
Thank God someone at Alienware figured out that they are supposed to release new stuff and be top of the game.

A new motherboard and new CPUs.
This may be very tough nut to crack for Alienware and their current laptops. I hope they will use this platform once it's released.

Yeah, considering the T9300 is around 300 and some bucks. The T9500 is around 500 if I'm not mistaken (for less than 5% performance improvement).

Just called to change my order as well. I'm going with the T9300. I can't justify spending 275$ on a 0.1 GHz speed increase. Will be interesting to see what this does to my shipping date.

This may be a dumb question, but how will we know when AW switches to Montevina? Will this be clearly advertised?
And is Montevina supposed to bring out the true potential of Penryn?

Fortunately i was able to switch from my merom 2.6ghz to the t9300 2.5ghz. However I wouldn't really be too disappointed if I was an earlier buyer. They have had their systems longer than we will have them and there is definitely a price to pay for that initial exclusivity. The performance gain, especially for gamers, is nil. The extra battery life and lower consumption is definitely a plus though.

I'm slightly disappointed in having got it early without Penryn, but its not such a big deal for me. So I lose out on 100-200 3dMark06 points and maybe 15 minutes or so of battery life....but I doubt it would be a significant difference in gaming. I'd be kicking myself if this latest update was for Montevina, however.

i honestly dont think Montevina will add any thing other than more expensive memory lawl ^_^... and possibly some non Xtream 2.8-3gig duel cores and like biger terbo mem (thats prob not montevina exclusive any way) quads... mehhhh cost 2 much / prob not out till 2009

regardless with the new cases of the alien ware notebooks i think they will stay santarosa for the next 2years before being discontinued/sold as refurbished.. expect to see your beloved laptop in a hand full of bright paint jobs and finishes before being concerned about any update.

sales support say "Gun Silver" with "skull ca"p is the next config we will see...at the end of march/ prob afue weeks before that for USA peeps (i assume its texture is like that of the stealth black m9750 or what ever) prob a response to the complaints about the touch pad being sticky and hard to slide across. ill most prob get it in that config... waiting for black will prob take to long and i must say the contrast of silver base to black scrn once opened does look nice.. . all black is abit boring.

Just wait till Farcry2 comes out and u will realize your hardware is ALOT more powerful than crysis tells you so.. like actually using your CPU ^_^
Ubisoft have already said that Farcry2 is drasticaly less demanding than crysis and it looks alot nicer (if not abit cartoony) from what ive seen.

I know all the these threads are popping up, but I just want to see how many people are calling in and making an order change to include the new Penryn?

I was in phase 6 and the rep told me, the laptop was suppose to ship out Friday the 22nd. But since I made the change and switched my 2.4 Ghz to 2.5, it might take an extra week to ship out.

Ya, looks that way but they went from the t7500 2.2ghz base to the t9300 2.5ghz penryn. The price went up like $100 which I think is worth the upgrade.

Also looks like they fixed that high range and selecting the defaults again thing.

well intel has not even shown Montevina yet they "are said to" in june..

but even then they could release the new chipset but not the new CPUs and have people running 800mghz penryns like the ones just out now for a while.... thus making no huge performance change...

Montevina laptops will prob show up towards the end of this year. and could possibly have no performance gain for gaming what so ever.... so i wouldn't factor it in unless u MUST HAVE quadcore ... but even then there is no indication when quadcores will be released for the montevina platform..

i dont think alienware will update the m15x and m17x to Montevina... they would at my best guess be inclined to sell pre overclocked x9000 at the highest speed of the montevina cpus 3.0
and just update the GFX card in the m15x and m17x when the top end Geforce9 go comes out (which could be well over a year).

A Montevina quadcore will prob come out around the end of the mXXx lifespan and thats when the next lot will come out.

all total guess work but when you look at the life spans of early ones i think it makes alot of sense ^_^

well I am going to bide my time
I went for the 2.2 ghz processor minimum spec I know but I know that it wont be a massive bottleneck for me :)

I have a feeling that the core components they are missing might include out of production processors :)
so an upgrade might be inevitable

eh, but I'm not mad -- if I wanted it I would've waited. However, it's good to see that AW is being proactive and was always intending to get Penryn into these m15xes as opposed to waiting a year or so

I was in Stage 5 and just called to change my order. I went from 2.4 GHz to T9300 2.5 GHz at no extra charge. She said it would delay my order 3-5 business days. I know this is pretty much echoing what everyone else had said, but I thought I'd let you know anyway.

I just called AW to change to the new CPU since my estimate date is 29th Feb. But guess what. "Sorry sir, But we shipped your order today".

    I was crushed...

So I advice people to call AW fast. I bet they are shipping all the orders with the old CPU fast AND HARD.

    just my luck.

I'll be calling them tonight to make this change. Is there an additional charge to change from the X7900 to the X9000?

BTW, my order's only in Phase 2 (submitted order the evening of 2/18). I'll let you know how it affects my ship date.

X7900 to X9000. No mention of money exchange yet. I just muscled in via e-mail on my phone at work, and got told I should have phoned, but because it was from the same e-mail address I ordered with, they'd go ahead with the swap if I confirmed it again by e-mail.

I think it actually works out cheaper by a handfull of pounds or so?

Got mine switched over from 2.4ghz to 2.5ghz Penryn. It was suppose to ship out on feb 22nd or thr 25th. but the rep said this might delay it another 5 days.

She was going to charge me $125 extra. but I told her that its the same price as the regular 2.4ghz core duo, then after 10 mins of being on hold, she came back saying that she wont charge me extra.
