Today in school, like always, I left my laptop on my desk which happens to be next to a window. I had math class so I had to leave it on my desk and go to another classroom without my laptop. While I was in class it started to rain very hard. After 45 min I come back to get my stuff and I see my M15x completely wet. Some girl wanted to open the window because it was hot and she didn´t realise my laptop was going to get wet. The laptop was off and the speakers were facing the window so I don´t think the processor nor the graphics card got wet. I removed the battery immediately and have not turned it on yet. My fear is that I think the screen will not work and probably the speakers will get damaged.
What should I do? Should I leave it in the sun in case water got in? Should I just turn it on right now? Will the normal warranty pay for the repair if it got damaged? Should I open my lappy to see if water reached the inside? Please help....

I would just leave it dry for at least 3 days. Open it up and take the components out and let them dry.

Then try and turn it on.

If it's broke, go after the chick that opened the window. I would make her pay for the damages, but that's just me ;)

Should I still take all the components out even if it voids my warranty?

Go to a store where they repair cell phones as soon as possible. They have a special chemical liquid they use to dry sensitive components. It reacts with the water and the evaporates. If the water stays in the laptop too long it will do definite damage. Happened to me with my old Toshiba (left on the balcony and then it started raining) but it worked like a dream after they dried it.

I couldn't possibly agree with this more :)

Let it dry. Most electronics can take some getting wet. Its trying to power them up while wet that causes the biggest problems.

Open it up, remove all the components and let them dry out. While doing that, call in and get some complete care for your system.

Yes, now would be a GREAT time to add complete care.

    Then it won't matter ;)

What Mandrake said. I have personally seen the concept work with a phone that fell into a toilet. The rice just sucks the moisture right out of everything!

you could try putting the components in a jar with uncooked rice , it sounds strange but it should absorb al the humidity

Okay Mandrake, why did you delete your post and make me look like I am crazy! lol

A bucket of rice should indeed make things right...

I am going to let it dry and I just have to wait and hope nothing got damaged....
If my laptop broke then I could chase the girl who opened the window and tell her to pay for it.

remove all batteries - including the watch sized cmos battery. water and electronics don't mix when power is involved.

The alcohol bath is recommended if the water has minerals in it (rain water does). You can do the same thing yourself if you can get 91% isopropyl from Wal-Mart and take your laptop apart. If not, any cellphone shop tech can do it. Luckily, laptops don't have the moisture paper on the inside like cellphones.

And yes, if you don't have CompleteCare, you should. I recc. it for anyone who doesn't leave the PC/laptop in the same place and never eats near it.

    Edit:
Oh, and yeah, don't bathe the HD, screen or optical drive. Mobo, ram, GPUs wires would be fine. Wipe down the case and fans.

I thought you were going crazy too :p

As far as what happened, I suggest using the warranty if it doesn't work. The rice is also a good idea.

Here is another idea. Sounds crazy, but it works. If it won't start, and you have access to deionized water, dissassemble the laptop and wash the motherboard in deionized water. Let it dry completely before attaching any power to the system obviously. It sounds wreckless, but it's worked on numerous devices, and should probably only be used as a last resort. I'll explain why it works. When things get wet, the minerals dry and stick to the electronics. They are conductive, so power starts running through them and it often times causes a short circut. Deionized water should be mineral free, and so it helps rinse any minerals from the motherboard. Hopefully there is no water in the HDD :(

Good luck, hope you get it working one way or the other.

I guess I will just let it dry by itself... water evaporates.... after 2 days I think I will turn it back on.
