So I was just watching an Alienware holiday shopping list video from the Alienware channel and when the dude got to the Alienware 51 backpack, he said he was just throwing this idea out there but even though it's meant for the 17 inch notebook, what's to stop you from putting something bigger than a 17 inch notebook in it and then winked and said he was "just saying". Seems like a pretty clear hint.

Lack of proper +18 inc panels will stop this dream. Alienware don’t even have proper panel options for their 17 inch Area-51m.

The current 2019 standard for 17” gaming laptops pretty much is the 1080p 144hz with or without Gsync.

The wink is odd though......what could he mean other than an 18 inch (or larger....) laptop? Maybe another ITX desktop?......

Could you imagine a return to a 19 inch machine like the old mALX??

Yeah seems pretty obvious to me something is coming, 18, 19, hell even 21 inch curved like the Acer Predator 21x. Something is up.

Indeed we would at least need something with 2560 x 1440 or 2560 x 1600 resolution and a refresh rate of 120Hz or higher but which panel manufacturer would be willing to produce that in 19" to 20"?

Please note that I am not mentioning 18" as I think that it is too close to 17.3". 19" would be a more substantial upgrade in size, especially with a 16:10 panel.

Hoping for a 21 inch curved with dual GPU's like the Predator 21x. Loved that thing.

Not taller than a classic 17" DTR screen so I was not impressed with the 21x. Now if ithe screen was at least 16:9 or taller...

$10000 and in a few hundred units. Expect a huge jump in price vs. the standard with custom made 18,4/21” screens. How the quality will be for low samples sold is another question. Panel maker’s doesn’t run charity. It’s about making profit!

This is the biggest hurdle for getting a good bigger screen - numbers. It does not help that some want 4k while others (me included) would prefer some kind of QHD resolution and everybody of course wants a higher refresh rate.

Yeah on a laptop like this I would rather a 1080p or at max 1440p screen because 95% of the time it will be hooked up to an external monitor anyway.

Yes, with bigger screens UHD is very nice and makes sense but with smaller screens you got to ask yourself why bother when you can enjoy a pixel perfect desktop with 2560 pixels across.

These alienware guys straight up lie in their product show off videos. They showed the M15 r2 and M17 r2 with dishonest cpu temps that did not reflect real world temps. So anything they say or hint at is just them talking out their rear mouth.

Not saying I would be against a larger laptop than the Area 51m. A 18'-19' monster would be nice to see in the old 17" body size. But, I'm not holding my breath until I see real proof. Like others have said they can't make a laptop screen that doesn't exist and 17" screens are vastly inferior to 15.6" right now. But, I'll gladly eat my words if I'm wrong.

I don't even want it in a 17" body, I want a beast. Big, heavy, thick, like the 18 was. High quality build. I would love a 21 inch curved like the Predator. I don't want something focused on traveling much farther than from 1 room to the other with the occasional trip out of the house on vacation or something. I want a true, beastly, desktop replacement with dual GPU's and a curved screen.

I think that Alienware 18 or MSI GT83 beast level will have to do - would not want for this to go into the Predator price region.

Somebody will have to build a nice big screen with at least QHD resolution and 120Hz or we will never get it.
For DTR purposes there would at least be the possibility to seek out the 18.4" UHD screen that was used for the Asus GX800 but I believe nobody even knows where that one was produced.

Dual GPU 17" laptops have been done before (M17x R1/M17x R2, I have working examples of both)

I have done a 18.4 4K screen upgrade to a GT73VR that is originally a 17.3 screen. Looks really good. Specs was Full Blown GTX 1080 with that 18.4 4K screen.

Edit: it was UHD model also. 3840 x 2160 RGB

Yes, I have seen that but unfortunately that screen is wider than even the biggest 17" chassis so it will not fit into any of the machines that otherwise would be good candidates for a bigger screen with a thinner bezel. Did you manage to get a GT80 case for it by now or do you have other plans for it?
