ya and setting the minimum cpu % in power manager is helpful as well
removing the synaptics driver and using the realtek 2.20 driver also seemed to help
Did all those yesterday and spent all day running 3Dmark06 and OC'ing, stutter was greatly reduced. Was able to get P7141 in vantage at stock speeds for 3870x2 and Qx9300 - so you know that was a stutter free run. Several others were close to that as well.

this maximal performance is from rmclock. i am using always high performance at windows but stuttering with it too..
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
RMClock didn't give me any change when I played around with it.
-
what i did to stop stuttering...
my physical hardware mods that i show in my sig, dont install synaptics touchpad driver, make sure you have vista SP2 installed, keep windows on high performance, loosened ram timings a little since i had them very tight, and for some reason installing the jmicron estata drivers has been known to help especially with those running raid 0....heard this from zfactor and it holds truth....do not use raid 0 or any raid setup if u stutter....although i am now stutter free...if i try raid 0 i stutter like mad -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
plugging a e-sata into my whitebook. made it unstable.
-
im not saying to use an esata..im saying the esata drivers somehow help with raid configurations and stuttering
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
the jmicron driver actually says a raid controller, NOT the esata controller. just an fyi (driver off the OCZ DIY disk that is)
I just went through all the installs this weekend putting on Windows 7 so I know this for sure. Coincidence, I think not. -

So I have been playing around doing some benching for a few hours and guess what, ever since i upped the PCI-e frequency using setfsb I aint stuttered once. And I was before the change. So I think I am on to something in the "cause of stuttering" department!
-
Wait, are you saying "Project Freeze" wasn't the end all be all of fixes for quad core stuttering? I thought the issue was "completely resolved" with the project freeze? (yeah thats a bit of sarcasm).
-
I've got stuttering with DFFS turned off, it was turned off in the first place, so it might be a contributing factor but turning it off won't necessarily fix it.
From what's said above I'm uninstalling my Synaptics touchpad driver to see if that helps at all. -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
@Marvie
Did you read project freeze?
It dedicated to cooling the laptop and it has nothing to do with stuttering. that's why we split it from the quad core stuttering thread.
@Evil
That should help out all. It did for me at least. Let us know what happens. -
Ok, so I should have said "copper modding the northbridge" instead then.
-
Hmm, I've still got the stutter. Maybe some options in RMClock are causing it (yes I have DFFS turned off) so I'm going to uninstall RMClock (and by that I mean deleting the files as there is no uninstall...) and see if that's any different.
It's actually been a lot worse for me lately for some reason. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
anyone else try the pci-e frequency thing?

I started at 102, then did 104 and 106 and 110. None of them gave me any stuttering over MANY runs of 3dMark 06 and vantage. The scores were so closely grouped that I have to say that NO stuttering took place - stuttering will widely vary the scores (lower for the stuttered runs)
So I'm pretty happy now, this resulted in the 2 new scores in my sig! (bare in mind my Qx9300 is only at 3013MHz for those scores) -
I know it is not completely fitting in this thread, but I did not want to create an extra thread about it.
My sounds is stuttering whenever my speakers (Logitech Cinema Z) are connected to any of the USB Ports.
The only port without stuttering is the combined eSata port.
New installation of the Logitech Software did not help.
Anyone have an idea? -

Question:

Shockwave_Omega Notebook Consultant
I'm currently also testing some of these settings..
I have already noticed a VERY BIG difference between running 3dmark06 with music on the background with and without the settings Kanuni mentioned.
I restarted my laptop earlier ( due to some updates.. I harldy used my laptop in the last couple of months ) without the settings and it was terribly stuttering and stuff.. Now restarted and loaded up those settings Kanuni posted. No stuttering what so ever ( except with the CPU tests but its minor and to be expected ).
With these settings the laptop feels how it should do. I'm just curious on how to save the settings in RMclock so I dont have to set them each time I restart the laptop.
The standard clocked system doesnt set a landspeed record but it feels as it should have done from the start with this processor. Might finally leave it in there and say goodbye to the P8400.. -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
make sure you install all the .net framework
-
Shockwave_Omega Notebook Consultant
Hmm yeah got those installed but how do I save those settings so I dont have to set them each time I restart? Do I need to install one of those registry keys?
-
lol -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
nope i think you need .net 2.0 i'm not sure the exact number.
snow your stuttering now aswell? -
Shockwave_Omega Notebook Consultant
actually its .net 1.1 you need
I havent had a stutter or glitch in the music since I started using the fore named settings. If they can bake this into a nice bios update everything should be ok -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
nice and thanks for the info. i forgot what version of .net for rmclock.
how long have you been running this? -
Shockwave_Omega Notebook Consultant
3 days now. I only have stuttering when RMclock isnt running and offcourse in the CPU test of 3Dmark06.
I would love to just switch of the throttle on my CPU though .. I know some treehugging hippy invented it going: [Gayvoice/Andy D*ck mode on] Oww.. My.. Goooood... We really really really need this you know.. For the trees and so on. [Gayvoice/Andy D*ck mode off]
I just want it to go full speed ahead Mr. Sulu! -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I found that setting the min cpu utilization really helped my system. although stutter still happened occasionally, was greatly reduced.

ya haha didn't even look, that is an excellent question Marvie100
And the answer should be no. -

he has a qx9300 also. he is fine with the p8400.

What Don said
My AW shipped with a lowly P8400.. I bought an OEM QX9300 (HP sparepart) from some guy.
I have 0,0 problems with the P8400 however it lacks some power at certain times. The QX9300 as with so many other M17 users has been a problem since day 1 that I got it. I tried just about everything.. Even the copper shim ( think mine was too small thought..)
I am still looking for a good dual core sollution to replace the QX9300 though. -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
the x9100 es is pretty good
-
wow sorry to hear ur qx9300 isnt working right. Idk what it was then but from what i have done to my m17 i havent seen one stutter for a long time with my qx9300 ever since i did all my mods....if u go dual core, get the x9100 for sure...so u can OC like hell
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
and the x9100 ES are E0 stepping from what I saw, where retail and OEM are C0, so that's awesome for the OC
-
I tend to think that this fix might only help with a QX9300. DFFS was never enabled on my Q9000 in the first place.
-
I second the motion for the X9100. For me 3.5 is stable with just Setfsb. If I used the OCZ .28 bios it may go higher. I don't know, but I'm pretty sure it would especially if I could increase the voltage. When at 3.5 it's only a couple degrees higher than at stock.
Possibly found another cause of stuttering--M17
