first off, 4850s on the M17x would be a waste of time

Second off, Moo, are those secondary card prices for the card alone or a set....they seem way out of whack

Based on the doubling of the price it sounds more like a set that comes with the heatsinks maybe and a SLI cable ?.

Although I will note, I have had higher CPU scores but not with the good GPU score for the overall. I think 13132 was my best CPU score

    umm... what is flashing?lol...

    no,im serious.

Do I need to flash it in the following cases?

    1) Going from a Single 260M up to a single 280M (If I bought from Sleey0)
    2) Going from a 280M down to a 260M
    3) Going from Dual 280M to a single 280M
    4) Vice versa of #3 but with 260M

I never saw this until now. I took care of business.

    yep...waiting on you now.

Thanks for bumping this up. When they say flashing they are referring to programming a new bios to the GPU.

Aren't both the graphics card the same one on both sides? - they just flip the connector port right?

They are physically the same card. So the only difference is the bios which controls how they work.

    Slave
    master

    Parent
    daughter

and the vbios can be changed on the cards, so if you have 2 slave cards you get a master bios then load up dos and just put a new bios on the gpu. Then that gpu is a master so you now have sli

You never need to flash unless your trying to make a 260 look like a 280 or vice versa. Or if you want to change some settings like voltage or speeds.

So wait, that makes absoluetly no sense!
Dell/ Alienware is charging someone twice the amount for the same (Physically) graphics card?!

Instead of buying the "secondary" GPU, why don't you just buy two of the "primary" and sli them?

This is stupid. What a rip off I say for dell/alienware to make a profit out of those noobs.!

    ---

anyways, can you SLI the M17x into having 3 same GPU, say the 260M?
Would it work and what performance gain you get

I think there is absolute no difference between slave and master card. They should be interchangeable. You don't even need to flash VBIOS. At least this is true on my m17x-R1. The PCI slots specify one as master and another as slave, but those cards don't control how they work together. I think we can make an experiment, let someone switch two 260s or 280s in SLI without doing any flash see if it works.

If you already have one 260 just get another primary 260 and you saved 300.

I don't know why DELL price their product with this non-sense. Just let you know when they first launches M17x in China, the price of upgrading from 260 to 280SLI is 583RMB(less than 90 USD). That lasted for more than a month. LOL

Regarding your question you can't fit a 3rd card in the system.

well, for testing purposes and if one can get a sli cable that goes 3-way, would you be able to sli all three 260M?

*the extra 260M would just be hanging out and not physically inside the system. :D

SLI doesn't work 3-way...neither does a gpu hanging outside of the system. What are you trying to do?

Edit: Let me qualify that statement by saying it doesn't work 3-way in a notebook.

I imagine he believes the integrated 9400m can be exchanged for a 260m, but even if that was possible it'd still be only sli, since the hybrid totaly switches over.

So almost double the price for the second one :( do you have a link Moo? I checked all over the site and chatted with two agents and none could find the link to be able to buy it. Since I´m not in the US I´ll have a friend buy it for me ( I´ll send the money via wiretransfer) so I can´t just call and place the order, I need a link so can tell my friend where/how to buy it. can the sli cable be purchased online? even if I buy the second 260 ( and let myself get ripped off by the price just to have peace of mind and not have to flash anything) I don´t get a cable? That´s the only thing I regret about not buying for my M17x a second GPU :(

One positive side effect for those with second 260M/280Ms is the support for full PhysX. Arkham Asylum is a great way to demo this where you can set PhysX to Normal (GPU), High (dedicated GPU).

My jaw was like /slack /crash /tinkle when I realised it was realtime and not cinematic on the intro - truly amazing and heartening to see! :)
