I updated without any problems, so I don't know what kind of issue your having :(.

On a side note slightly highjacking your thread. When you get your new Alienware and it comes preloaded with steam and portal. can this be used with an existing steam account?

I haven't had a problem updating my games through steam on my desktop or M11x. Though my games haven't had to updated with the new Steam client that is out now.

I already had a Steam account with Portal when my M11x arrived. On first boot up of Steam I tried to associated the free Portal into my account and it never appeared as an extra copy. If someone else had better luck let me know. I would have liked to have had a 2nd copy for a trade/gift.

Sounds like you might need to reinstall Steam and let it download all your games again. Last week they did both a client and server side update and the client one didn't update right on my desktop. I had a Steam Backup from last month, so I uninstalled Steam completely, ran the backup install and let it update. Smooth sailing since.
