Problems & Solutions: Running Win7 on m15x

Hi All,

I am creating this thread as I will be monitoring all the Win7 problems very closely. Please report all the problems here and I will try to find answers to them and keep this post updated.

The idea is to keep a repository of problems and solutions as they occur. It's been quite some time I have been using Win7 on m15x and faced quite a lot challenges.

At this time I am keeping this thread empty without any problem and update them later. Mostly I am concerned about software issues but any problem can be documented here.

So, please keep them coming and I will try to find the solution in every possible manner.

I've been running 7068 x64 for a while on my m15x and so far, the synaptics touchpad drivers don't work on Win7, and we all know that the AlienFX stuff causes a memory leak.

 

build 7000 worked flawlessly, just now getting to RC(7100). I will see what works and what not.

trying to run Ntune or any associated program (nvidia monitor) gives me a BSOD.

Also with win7 build 7000 x64 my latency would stay below 300us, most of the time.
Now with 7100 I am getting a spike when I open a new window, using (181.72 driver) and an average latency of 450us, with a spike of 1400us, every second or so.

 

Ok, I got a fix for my problem. Downloaded a Vista x64 driver I used the 182.50 with a modded inf, no more high latency spikes. Stays between 150us and 350us now.

I can feel a little bit of performance difference too, windows appear faster, and smoother.

It seems that any vista x64 driver will work in 7 currently. I am using a bunch of Vista x64 driver with out a problem.

Also if you are experiencing high latency when watching HD streaming video, to fix this open task manager and set the affinity of the program to CPU 0 only. This fixed my VLC HD, and firefox HD streaming.

 

Oh, I lag REALLY badly when using an SD card. If I'm copying files to/from an SD card in the built-in slot, I can't listen to music, play games, or watch videos. I can only do things that don't require low latency, like instant message, email or surf static websites.

 

I'm experiencing a rather strange issue when copying large files across the network. I have the RC of Win7 installed on both my m15x and my desktop but only the m15x is experiencing this.

Whenever I use explorer to copy large files across the network (4GB or larger), explorer will hang/freeze for several minutes before it unfreezes and resumes file copying. I've only tried the latest official network driver for x64 vista so I have yet to determine if it is a driver issue or something else.

Also, as dwend points out. Certain nvidia drivers will give you a rather high latency. Though updating helps I still find that the latency is generally higher than it was in vista. This is really to be expected as latency issues are often driver related.

 

I'm running build 7106 and got these problem

- Using the CC ver 1.28 SP1, Alien Fusion eating up to 40-80% CPU and about 1Gb
- I notice a latency even when trying to scroll long web pages. I think the default driver downloaded from Windows Update for W7 is not stable
- Keyboard is not very reponsive sometimes ( I dont know why maybe caused by Alien Fusion CPU&RAM overload).

 

Hello I got really problem with win7. I just installed 32 bit version. Everything works smooth until I try to install graphic nvidia drivers. Every time I install graphic drivers I will get Blue Death when my windows is starting. Currently trying to clean my system as much as possible, because according to forum and web 8800 GTX should't have problems to work.
