I've tried to install Windows 7 Home Premium on my M17 laptop several times now without success. It just gets stuck while saying that it's expanding Windows files.

    I've tried 2 new drives (a 320 gb and a 500 gb).

I've tried both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7 Home Premium.

I've tried 2 different copies (I own 2) of Windows 7 Home Premium.

I've gotten a USB DVD drive and used that.

I always get the same behavior. With 32-bit Win 7 it gets stuck at 29%. With 64-bit Win 7 it gets stuck around 88%.

I've been able to install all the versions on another laptop and using each of the above 2 drives, so I know it's not the disks, it's not the hard drives, it's not the DVD reader.

There's something specifically about this M17 that will not allow this to happen.

Has anyone else seen this or had issues (or succeeded)? It seems to me that the M17 is a complete dud and I should ask for a refund or something.

How long did you wait ?

SometimeS I have had it not move for 10 minutes

that does not make it a dud .... Obviously it's on your end since windows 7 works perfect on it ;)

    I have it running here

This has sat in the same place for up to 45 minutes because I was busy and leaving it alone. When it seizes up the dots stop going across and the CD also becomes inactive.

I'll repeat, the disks are good, the hard drives are good and the DVD readers are good. The only places where any/all fail is this particular laptop.

Have no idea what you mean by saying "Windows 7 runs perfect on it.".

This phase should only be where files are copied from the DVD to the hard drive (being expanded as they go).

I also installed Windows 7 on the hard drive on another laptop and tried to stop it before it started identifying hardware and then put it in the M17, and it sort of started, but unfortunately Windows 7 doesn't like playing this game.

This is a clean install. The full, $199 version of Win 7 Home Premium.

The hard disks I'm trying with are also new (Seagate drives). I've had enough experience with product installs going bad that I always start with fresh drives - so I don't screw what I currently have.

I almost wonder if it's a BIOS issue, but that seems silly at this phase, which should be copying files from the DVD and expanding them.

I'm running Windows 7 as well. I have never had a problem installing it, and I've installed it more than a few times.

On the "expanding" portion windows is not only "expanding" but also probing the hardware as well so it's a good idea to check your main components (including the drive/s)

Ah, this last bit of new is interesting.

So far as drives go, one of these used by be my drive on another laptop, but I think it would be useful to install another OS on this same computer and see how that goes. For teh disk I want to use (a 500 gb seagate) I actually instaleld Win 7 just fine on it on another lappy and then moved it into this one. It installed fine on the other machine but gave me issues when booting from it on this one (which I expected). I did think i caught it pre-probing.

I'm not sure if I have vista sitting around, but I do have Win 2003 EE and XP Pro.

Try putting in only one HDD, if the installation fails, replace with another one and see if it's the same.
