Ok so for the last couple of months my laptops LCD has randomly gone black. I could see the desktop but it was really dark, as if it had no backlight.
All it took was me to pivot the screen up and down a bit and it would come back shiny as new.
Sometimes it would require me closing it all the way to put it into standby then turning it back on.
Then today nothing worked. It stayed dark. Nothing I Can do ca get the backlight back on. What are my options here?
I went to Alienware to find information on reseating the LCD cable but all their schematics and diagrams have pictures that do not fit my Area 51 at all. They look NOTHING like my laptop and thus their instructions are worthless. This is really bothersome.
Any ideas? I am off warranty. Had this computer 4 years now.

there are numerous 3rd party notebook repair shops. i'm sure they could replace your LCD (for a fee, of course).
-
I dont think its broken. I think a wire is loose.
-
well, re-seat the connector ribbon then.
-
.....did you even read my post? I am asking if anyone knows how on this model...
-
off the bat, i'd say shut it down, take out the battery, disconnect it from the AC, open it up, find the LCD connector, take it out, put it back in. make sure you pull it out by the connector and not by the cables. put the back panel on again, insert battery, connect AC, et voila.

Give AW customer service a ring, they'll guide you through it.

he said he's past the warranty though...

Yes I read, and you never said you RANG them. You said you went to alienware, so we assume you mean the website.
-
very much so. at risk of sounding clichéd, you need to work with us so we can work with you...
-
Sorry I should have been more clear. They gave me the link to the site and instructions. Which even though they said they were for my model... the diagram did not match my machine at all.
-
you still have that link?
-
No but trust me it looks nothing like my laptops insides.
I have taken out the GPU before... but there are no cables there. -
ok, fine, seems like you know everything so why bother posting? Seriously, if you want help, you gotta answer questions so we can better understand ur situation!

My situation is this
I have a Area-51 m766 laptop.
I want to reseat the LCD cable.
The instructions on alienwares site are horrible.
Does anyone here have experiance with the 766 that might help me? -
anyone got an idea?
-
i myself don't know, but can't you just open up your notebook and look for the (ostensibly only) cable running to your monitor? and then following that cable back to it's connector, and then reseating it?
-
Anyone got any ideas?

hi i have an alienware m766 with issues and i would like to know what i can do to save it.
i'm a mobile dj and when this laptop gets hot it starts to splutter the music out,its using a 3.6 pent 4 and 2 gb of ddr1 ram.also i noticed it takes a while to open folders for example the music folders when i go into the folder its fine untill i load music with wmp then it hangs,.................... then plays file.after that it will play files as fast as i expect it too,i have downloaded and used 6 different pc mixers all start to stutter about an hour into it, there is a known issue with the graphic card, when you play games the screen is garbled, but normal use its fine i dont play games nor does the mixing program really use the card at all.
someone please help. -
