Hey everyone was going to buy a M17x. Having trouble deciding which processor to choose. Between Intel® Core2 Duo T9800 2.93GHz (6MB Cache, 1066MHz FSB) and Intel® Core2 Quad Q9000 2.0GHz (6MB Cache, 1066MHz FSB) which is better for gaming, milti-tasking etc.

Gaming, in some cases the dual core, in some the quad core, in most cases it's not going to make a difference, and more and more games are being made to utilise quad cores.
For multi-tasking, the quad wins without a doubt. -
Ive been asking this question a lot lately and last night I ordered the faster dual-core(X9100) over the quad which is only necessary for certain tasks.
If you want an immediately faster PC in gaming then go for that T9800...I would and so would many others on here!
good luck. -

True as of right now just get a high end Dual core... and then later on pick up a quad and install it yourself, it's really no sweat
-
I wouldn't buy a quad unless it came cheap/was a good deal. I don't think personally that QX9300 is worth the grand that Dell wants.
I am getting a Q9000 as it was included in the e-value code I used. I figure that a Q9000 will be VERY easy to sell
Then I am going to get an X9100 because they are extremely easy to find and are cheaper than the Q9200 (which I can't find anymore - I won't buy the temp sensor-less ones on fleabay). -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Yeah the 9200 hasn't been getting very good reviews
Quad said it was very good at stock 2.4 but he couldn't OC to save his life
-
T9800 isn't worth the extra cost over the T9600.
-
Hey but doesn't the Q9000 have a better future since it has quad core???
-
-
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
well I got my Qx9300 for 400.... a deal I couldn't pass up and I'm glad I didn't... the prices are in the higher 500's now that Intel has started cracking down on the ES versions
-
I'll be using the laptop for basically gaming and school work. Anyways is the T9800 worth $250 more than the T9600???
-
no all you need is the t9600 it will play any game out on high ... YOU DO NOT NEED A QUAD ..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the t9600 will overclock easily to 3.2-3.4 ghz easy
save your money -
Hey thanks Moo, but what about the 2 additional cores of the Q9000??? Doesn't this make it better for multi tasking?????
Regards,
Darthmaniac -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Yes it does make for better multi tasking... Moo's point is right now you do not need a Quad... and when you do you can pick up a better one for cheaper
-
TBH quad is 100% better in multitasking.
-
not every one needs a quad and he does not need to be throwing money out for somethign he won't use .....a t9600 will be MORE THENE NOUGH FOR GAMING OR VISTA -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
It's true Big... Even I will admit that, the fact is that for normal use I really barely even am able to touch my quad... I have it becuase I do serious gaming, Video rendering etc.
-
Hey thanks so it looks like I'll be going with the T9600 and then I'll probably over clock it, but only i'm not very good at over-clocking, anyone have a good guide???

MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
There's always posting... but for me as well I have been working on OC my Qx9300 for the first time... every proc is different, it's going to be a system of trial an error for you
-
My multitasking is basically...
a VM running WIN XP + vs.net, phped, iis, mssql and sometimes netbeans
Another VM running gentoo linux + apache, mysql, and gcc/gc++ compiling something.
And of course my win 7 with foobar2k, TS, war3, CSS, firefox, msn, chrome (yes i use firefox and chrome at the same time).
Don't ask me how but almost 90% of the time thats what is running in my desktop lol.
Oh god... I need a i7, 12gb and gtx280m sli lol -
Probably have to search the net for a beginners guide. But are all guides for overclocking the T9600 the same or is there a specific one for Alienware???
I'm such a noob at this...

So am I! welcome to the club lol... Join us in the M17x Benchmark threads and we will be happy to help!

As the others say you probably really don't need a quad right now. I personally like quad cores, but that's just me. In my opinion you could probably overclock a Q9000 to 2.4GHz or higher which should be more than enough for nearly everything right now
but there's no guarantee on how high any processor will overclock.
As others have said, go with a dual core. Alternatively order it with the lowest processor and get a QX9300 off eBay however that can be fairly costly and while completely safe, if you ever need to send it back to AW you'll have to swap the processors back. -
Are their anythings you need to know while changing the processor???

Not a whole lot... remember to ground yourself and keep metal handy to continue grounding... Clean area, with a compressed air can... and you definitely need a magnetic screw driver or it is nearly impossible... Everything else is pretty straight forward although I would recommend using a guide from mandrake which I can send to you (PM me your email) and Moo's video helps too
-
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Ok you can take it off now if you like, I'm sending it
-
Hey thanks alot, where can I find Moo's video???

Hey thanks MrButterBiscuits. One last question, is it worth getting a blu ray optical drive??? Does it upscale DVDs or something???? I already have a ps3.
Regards,
Darthmaniac -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Yea Blu-ray does upscale normal DVD's, but blu-ray is always better
... It's definitely more convenient to have it in your laptop I have a PS3 as well but I love my Blu-ray burner drive movies and or burn any type of CD/DVD/BLU... Actually if you want the BB drive I believe someone found the same drives they use on Ebay for a pretty good price
