I had a question but I also wanted to make this a fun thread. Do you take your alienware laptop to work with you and if you do, what kind of reactions/questions/curiosities do you get from people/co-qorkers? Post fun or interesting experiences you've had with people. :)

Since Alienware is relatively new here in India, not many people know about it. I've used the Area 51 m15x and now the M11x in office, and my meetings always begin with me getting my laptop on the table to connect it to projectors (I'm in business development). Suffice to say, I run through my meetings with ease, especially since the laptops are a great ice-breaker!!! :D
Oh, and the women love the lights!! :p
There is one unspoken rule in office though - No-one is allowed near the Alien!! Touch the screen and you're dead ;)

I'd had many-a-conversation with airport security about my laptop (M17x-R1). Most knew it was an Alienware on sight, and were jealous as all hell, some actually got someone to cover for them to get a good look at it.

I've used it in work a couple of times, and it got a few "nice laptop!"-type comments. Even my boss was impressed.

I took my m17x r3 to work because one of IT guys wanted to see it. He has an Asus gaming laptop a few generations old and is window shopping.

I got a lot of interest from the IT guys who practically stood in line to fondle it. To my surprise though, I got the most compliments from the women in the accounting department. They really liked the lights and the keyboard font.

On a side note, when you turn all the lights off, it really does not look out of place in the office. It's long battery life (6970m with the manually switchable graphics), full keyboard, and powerhouse processor make it a natural at getting work done.

I think people will look at you as a kid if you have a red one with all the lights blazing. If you go stealth black and turn off the lights most people will just notice that it is a nice laptop :p

Friend of mine had his M15x in a class up on campus and had his keyboard set to green in a dark room. The Professor singled him out in the middle of class and told him not to bring little kid toys to school anymore.

I'm retired but folks that come into my home see it straight away since it's viewable as one walks into the room and sits prominently on the desk where the desktop monitor used to be.

My neighbor is a writer and she remarked favorably when she saw my M17x r1 since the keyboard is lit and she thought it would make it much easier on her eyes when she types although she did find the keys a bit small.

I moved my new desktop into the family room where it uses my 37" Vizio HDTV as the monitor, I thought she was going to faint the day she saw me in my recliner with the wireless keyboard and mouse, in my lap and the wireless headphones on watching a BluRay movie. :)

Well I don' take it to 'work' but I do to uni once in a while. I'm scared people are looking at it with such.. devilish eyes, Im scared they'll steal it if i'm not looking lol.

I should take it to a coffee shop and see how that goes.

And I would've told that professor that his kids are going to college because of my tuition fees. No problems here when I take mine to work. They care more about production than anything else.

On campus I rarely get many odd looks. 80 percent of students/professors computers are Macs. Everyone I talk to doesnt even know what Alienware is. In my two years on campus I have only seen one m11x. Which is a shame.

Nothing exciting here...I think people who had negative thoughts about my m11x may have kept it to themselves.

There have been two girls that said they digged the little glowing alien head on my m11x while I was using it in class, though I would think it's a little dorky.

Gonna be weird when my red m14x comes in, since that's going to be flashy as hell

    This is hilarious.

Reminds me of an incident last nite at a Chinese to-go restaurant me and my gf were at. A lady who had just finished eating was exiting the restaurant and before she even stepped out, she already put a cigarette in her mouth. As I came in the store, she muttered obnoxiously "ching chong ching chong." I looked at her, and just ignored her and walked to go order my food. I hate people liek that. I really don't find what's so funny or satisfying about making fun of people's languages. I really do not understand at all. How does this relate to your story? Well, in my 24 years of life, I still have not been able to find a clever enough or even worth-my-time remark/response to racist idiots like the lady yesterday. Anything that I've come up with is similar to your response to the professor---long, too educated, and prolly something that the idiot racist wouldnt understand. Thus, it would end up wasting MY time to just respond to idiots like that, right?

Seriously, I hate people. They shoudl just keep their mouths shut, especially if they've nothing nice to say. And this lady, I'm not sure if she knew, but SHE was the one that NEEDED asian food---not me. Idiots lolz.

Oh, regarding your professor, yah, like everyone else already said, tell him to shove it.

I'd answer her with a "ching chong ling long" in a very loud and stereotypical asian accent haha. But yeah, haven't really encountered too many racists here in Texas. Surprising I know, but I guess it helps being in Austin.

From my understanding, Austin has a fairly younger population living there, so it's not surprising to hear that racism may not be as prevalent in that area. I think younger generations tend to not suffer from the ignorance our parents were exposed to before and during the time of the civil rights movement.

This racist b-word was prolly in her mid to late 30s though. Didn't help that she looked like a crackhead/prostitute either...I hate people around here, they're so ghetto...

Back on topic, I think that all black, silver, or white AW's would look very suitable for professional atmospheres. The red one's the sore thumb lolz.

That might work, although it's corny. See, I'm trying to find something that'll destroy her and wreck her self-esteem to the point that she'd either A) stop being racist, or B) possibly turn herself into the popo for being an idiot. Yah I said it: She should be arrested or jailed for being an idiot.

Heck, my professors would be happy if we even came to class...
Of course if it was dark and we were watching a movie, I would turn off AlienFX. If they told me not to bring it back, I would point to the numerous MBPs in the room with their backlit "apple".

I've never even seen an alienware at my campus. Most (95%) have never even heard of it. Perhaps 80-90% of my college has a MBP or MB. So sad :(

Black looks the most professional to me. Silver is pretty classy too. Red is a lil informal. Btw, is there any way to turn off the light on the alienhead?

Also I personally hate racists too :) Glad other people share my sentiment of those fags.

Apple laptops are yucky. Too common and boring. No sense of style or exclusiveness. Real Talk

All you hear from fanboys that they always brag about are 2 things:

1.) It is light and slim (ok?...)
2.) Mac never gets viruses (That's because most users are using windows in the world, and there is nothing worth infecting or spying on a Mac).

I remember someone once told me that Macs don't get viruses, but they DO get "bugs." Same stuff, right? LOLZ

In high school, most girls are in love with my computer because of the lights. The boys always are telling me how awesome is my laptop.
I had just got about 5 strange comments from pple, like "Emmmm thats a computer ? because it looks more like a toy" or "That computer looks creepy".

Definitely. Most of the people at my college think they're rich and cool because they all have macs. Personally, I would hate to conform to macs because everyone else has one, and they're so overpriced compared to their performance

There's some students at my school that carry them in hand and make sure to walk into the cafeteria or crowded hallways while holding it just to show off that they have a Mac.

I'd love to get an M18X (which starts at the exact same price as 2011 SB Macs @ 2k) and find a big pile of Mac users in the library. I'd then sit down, grab the M18X out of my bag, smile and yell out: "Hey guys! I just wanted to let you know that what I'm holding costs the same price as your Macs and I have 10 times the power", pack up and then go LOL

I would die of laughter :)

Once a lady called my sister a terrorist just because she wear a headscarf (obviously a muslim so in her brain we are killers or something....!) then when i stared at her she said so what you gonna blow me now LMAO worst thing of all we were in FREAKING Disney land, suppose to be a happy place yet she is angry? we don't even know her, we were just standing in line waiting for our ride.

We were in line with people behind us and front of us lol can't just move on we were stuck with that Bi**h i told her if she don't shut up she will regret it then hell went loose, she started screaming and called security :p

When security guy came he demanded from us to to jump out of the line to him i told him i wont get out from the line after waiting 20min for this ride, if you wanna talk wait until we are out, he agreed but said he will keep looking at us until we finish the ride to avoid trouble, right after that my sister is very young so her English is not perfect, she asked me to translate what is the security guy is saying and i began telling her what he said in my Native language (not English) then ALL OF SUDDEN the security guy YELL at me saying "SPEAK IN ENGLISH YOU ARE IN AMERICA"

Now that seriously made me pissed a bit he thought we were cursing or saying at them lol in our language? either way we did go to the ride but did not enjoy it at all because we knew what kind of crap await us outside, once we got out the lady and the security guy was with her.

I told the Security guy and the lady you two does not present the American people sadly there are always the retards in every society and surely you two belong to them and if you (The security guy) speak one word more with me i will call the police myself now so f**k off specially if you wanna keep your job scum, and you (The lady) such a shame for a women at your age to be so ugly from the inside and the outside, do you not have kids? (I was saying that because my sister is young :p) the stupid women actually said "no i don't have kids and I'm not married" and then i told her I'm not surprised because no man would stay with you let alone have kids from you, Surprisingly she stayed silent for 4-5 seconds then did burst into tears, we left then lolol it was very awkward experience

    lol high five!

Sounds like that lady got slammed for being an ignorant and racist idiot. It's one thing to be prejudiced, but it's another thing to be calling a young child a "terrorist" just for wearing a certain piece of garment. And shame on the security personnel for taking that lady's side. This just shows how incredibly intolerant and moronic some people have become these days.

I'm glad that lady got put in her place though. Good job :)

You can thank the American media (Fox News, etc.) for branding all Muslims as terrorists. I personally have never seen racism anywhere in Canada since there's people from allover the world in my area. Some of the nicest people and most loyal people I've met come from Muslim backgrounds to start a new life here.

I'll never forget when I worked at the Marriott Hotel in Niagara Falls, this drunk American came in the hotel and threw a handful of coins at my face as hard as he could when he heard I had a French accent. On another occasion, I went shopping in Buffalo, NY. and I was insulted for having a French accent by someone standing in line during checkout (belittling and insinuating that I was coming there to steal their jobs as a foreigner).

I totally feel unwelcome now after these incidents. It's like anyone who looks, speaks, dresses, acts differently is an outcast and will be publicly ridiculed until he/she leaves.

There's great people I've met from the US (lifetime friends; my electronic music band), but the US also contains some of the worst and most ignorant people I have ever met. :)

+1 for standing up for yourself.

Possible to get back on track with the thread topic - and not turn this into an "I Hate America" thread? It's easy to pick a random instance of something on an internet forum and claim it occurred, because there is no burden of proof.

The general public in my area doesn't seem to concerned with laptops in general, whether it's my Dell from work or my AW - they usually ignore it.

...now, you see Apple's everywhere, almost disturbingly so.

I’d like to keep us off track just for a second. Once upon a time I had said some insensitive things to someone I work with. I didn’t know it but he was really hurt and angry. I found out when we ran into a problem and he expressed far more anger than was required for the situation. And it was at me and I wasn’t responsible for the situation. We had lunch and I listened. I learned. I continued my smart remarks but I was very careful not to offend him. This happened years ago and to this day, if this guy ever needed anything I’d be there in a second for him.

Racism starts as ignorance. Once you are relieved of your ignorance it is outright stupid. Right handed people shouldn’t make more or less money than left handed people. People with blue eyes shouldn’t have an advantage at a manager’s position over someone with brown eyes.

I was working in a corporate environment and someone got upset with me and took an innocent comment completely the wrong way. As he was getting ready to let me have it when a friend of his came up and asked about the situation. I was accused of being a racist. His buddy pointed out that I was the most diverse person he had ever met. Tempers cooled and life continued. I learned that even if you have no intent to offend there may still be someone out there who wants to be offended.

Clearly this issue is very complex and won’t be settled here. I’m grateful for patient people. It is amazing how far a simple lunch will take you.

Can we turn this into a Macs-are-a-ripoff-thread instead? Cuz everyone @ work has a Mac, and in college, ppl either had an overpriced Mac or an overpriced Sony Vaio. And you all know that neither brand has any good hardware for their high prices...

I very regularly take on my Macbook Pro friends with my m11x, I'm so surprised at their unwillingness to admit the hardware superiority, I even had one friend end up basing his argument on the peripherals he got with his Mac. It makes me lol hardcore!!

Everyone who sees my little black m11x agrees it's cool, and the lights are even more impressive when you start switching them to different colours in the middle of a lecture.

I would love to see the reaction to a red m17x or any red alien in fact...

I was sitting at the bar with a friend one night, I had my iphone3 out showing him some things on it, the guy next to me pulls out his iphone4 and starts playing with that... then he pulls out his ipad to show me up again... so I pulled out the m11x to show him up :) the rest of the time at the bar the guy was asking me questions about the computer.

I know a macbook user who asked me once if i were a macbook user and i said no and never will, then he started telling me how macbook is awesome and how his ipad/iphone/ipod work perfectly with his macbook, how there are alternative to every windows software on macbook but plenty of mac programs have no alternative on windows etc

When he finished talking i asked him to give me 1 reason to actually switch and he couldn't give me any, (for video editing windows was better for me due my software Sony vegas pro 9 not even available on masc) for gaming everyone know how crap is gaming support on mac, for browsing he actually said safari................ i told him dude safari is available on windows  etc

At the end the guy paid +2000$ to browse and play music/videos it seems..... yeah i can pay 300$ for a windows laptop and do that.

Don't know about others but my experience in real life most Mac users are buying them to brag about having expensive laptop only :p they are nice people though and educated in general

I've had some discussions with people who use Macs and some of them are interesting.

When I detect that the other person is a Mac-fanatic I just say "OK dude, have it your way" and drop the subject. There's little reason to have a heated argument on that anyway.

When people actually are willing to listen and learn, most of the time I leave the Mac users with no arguments, BUT most of the time I am more knowledgeable on computers than those Mac users which gives me an unfair advantage in the discussion. In any case, some rebuttal arguments that come up often:

    1) Security: Microsoft actually addresses their security holes faster, and hacker competitions show that Mac OS is the least secure.
    2) Command line: Windows has a command line, a fact that surprises many Mac users. If you don't need it often, it just shows that Windows is well optimized for the average-Joe user.
    3) Scripts: Yeah, you can make scripts in Windows: batch files, Powershell, etc...
    4) Gaming: no comments
    5) Program availability: no comments
    6) Vendor lock-in: if you want to use a Mac you're tied to Apple's hardware and software. If you want to use Windows, you're tied to Microsoft's software (obviously), but you can choose your hardware freely.
    7) Price: generally, you can get similar hardware+warranty as a Mac for a lower price. Dell is a good example of this. My Latitude cost as much as a similarly spec'd Mac Pro at the time, but I get 3 years of on-site warranty while Macs get 3 years of mail-in warranty.

These are just those that pop into my head now, I'm sure I've used many more in the past...

    Love it!!

Thanks for that, those were some I didn't think of. I echo you on the unfair advantage of tech knowledge, has come up more than once when discussing it with one of my mac friends.

    Just to play Devil's Advocate

There's definitely a price difference (about $400-$500 to be exact) between similarly equipped Macbooks and Alienware's. At the same time, Mac's have a reputation for being "perfect" and reliable (marketing). Alienware doesn't share that reputation. Heck, neither does Dell. Technically you could make the same argument between basic Alienware setups and other brands of gaming laptops can you not?

That's not being Devil's Advocate at all, I completely agree! Apple did an absolutely amazing job in the marketing side. Their products are immediately recognized by ANYONE (not just us tech geeks), and pretty much anyone will agree that they confer some sense of pride to the ones that use them (even if a few people, like us, can tell whether the inside is as good as the outside or not).

I don't like Apple products in general (with a few exceptions), but I tip my hat to their marketing department, they know what they are doing.

I use a Mac for video editing just because I perfer Final Cut Pro over anything else, but that's about all they're useful for imo.
