My boyfriend didn't like how the Alienware looked because he said it was tacky, and I sorta agreed with it. But when we looked at the M11x in stores and showed him that you can change the colors of the lights (and turn off the headlights which neither of us liked), he was mighty impressed. And while I had trouble deciding between three laptops, the shiny of Alienware got me sold.

I'm planning on getting a M14x but this is the reason why I'm a little hesitant. The flashy lights are sure to attract a lot of unwanted attention. That and added to the fact that I'm a tiny girl, which most would consider an easy target. :(

The lights are all gimmicks. I like the AW lappies cuz they're really clean looking and don't have all that nerdy looking crap that MSI does with their current GX/GT models. Asus does designs really well too.

Not that I disagree with your basic argument, but the Mac has has a unix Terminal shell since Mac OS X and you can write scripts using some of the unix tools or the built in Automator program. Just saying...

I know that! The thing is that some Mac users say "Mac combines great usability with power from the command tool" as a pro-Mac argument. It's not really valid, since Windows also has one.

This has spiraled off a bit into mac vs pc, so I'll just leave a small argument and move back on to the public reaction.

Macs are perfectly marketed. Look at stocks. Every tech stock is falling... except apple. They make things thin and shiny and people go nuts. They could release steve job's poo in a crystal vase and people would clear the shelves. They are obviously a premium over windows pcs, and underperforming. But there is a sense of pride in it, because they're seen as high-class. A lot of people I know with macs are bursting with pride over them. I just leave them to their own, they waste their money, and I waste mine.

Personally, I probably would be turning off alienfx at my college. Alienware is, if you ignore the alienhead and alien writing, extremely classy. Its design and shape kill sager and asus (debatable for g-series, dont start a war...) With alien fx off, it is a very classy laptop. Even with it on, it is incredibly neat that we at least have the option for color optimization. I will have no problem walking around campus with my alienware next year, and if anybody asks, and points out the virtues of a mac, I'll be sure to laugh and keep walking.

I was at starbucks earlier this week busy clearing my work mail with the m14x. Minding my own business amongst the macs around me and I heard this: "What the ****.." :D

This means they'd feel schooled by our R3s :) But ferreal, the 14x is probably their best product in terms of size/performance. It's too bad that it only has 1 vent.
