    So I picked up a used AW17 R5 (Ranger).

The warranty is done in June this year. I got a few quotes from different departments at Dell, with the best being $230 CAD for a one-year extension.

Is this good/bad? Any tips on getting a better deal?

You can probably haggle with them further. Ask to speak to a manager and say you'll pay XXX amount.

I got a three-year extension for about $450. You should be able to do much better than what you were quoted.

So I managed to get pretty much the same thing, $500 CAD for three years, or $350 CAD for 2 years.

I've done a few upgrades (replaced RAM, added a SSD). I also have some upgrades incoming (new LCD, new video card).

Will extending the warranty be worth it in this case? I'm assuming the warranty won't cover any components I replaced myself, and Dell would probably not cover any work required that was caused by components I replaced myself.

The current warranty is up in June of this year.

If you are doing that many upgrades, it would be better to not extend warranty unless you want to put the original GPU and screen back if and when the laptop has a hardware problem.

I agree with Game. No need to extend with substantial upgrades.

Thanks for the input - I ended up getting a refund on the warranty.

Really didn't make sense when some of the major components wouldn't even be covered under that warranty.

Even without any kind of upgrades, it is impossible to predict what will be available to serve as a system exchange in 2 or 3 more years. Folks that have extended warranties on the M18xR2 and Alienware 18 that are still valid for another year or two may be in a bad spot once replacement parts have dried up and nothing is left as an option for a system exchange other than a massive downgrade. Getting a BGA Alienware 17, even with an eGPU, as a replacement for a $4500+ SLI beast with an Extreme CPU is not a comforting proposition.

I would be beyond disgusted if I had to trade in an 18 for something far lesser with a single dGPU, that would be enough to make me cry.

I think that I would end up in a fetal position, clutching a flannel blankey and sucking my thumb over that, LOL.

That's pretty much why I just cancelled that warranty extension. In two years, the way things are going, they probably wouldn't have any spare parts left anyway.

In two years the way things are going there might not even be anymore alienware. Lol.

    Just saying.

That was the best thing to do. Warranty extensions are great if you get everything from our side but with 3rd party upgrades in there it kinda defeats the purpose.
