Say if you only have a WXGA screen for the built in screen. If I use the HDMI output to output to an external 1920 x 1080 monitor will my resolution choices still be limited to the 1440 x 900. My friend is telling me that the graphics card will recognize that the lcd screen built in is limited to 1440 x 900 so that graphics card will only output that 1440 x 900 as its max resolution even if its hooked up via HDMI to a 1920 x 1080 monitor. This does not sound right to me but I just want to be sure. Does anyone here know for sure if your built in screen is 1440 x 900 can you still output 1920 x 1080 to an external monitor?

I'm not sure what you're asking, but HDMI is a high definition output. In other words, if your external monitor is capable of receiving 1920 x 1080, that's what you'll get. Better than your built-in lappy tappy.

I know HDMI supports 1920 x 1080. that isnt what im asking. I am asking that since the built in monitor is 1440 x 900 when i connect itl via hdmi to an external monitor and go into the display menu where you can change the resolution of your desktop will it only have 1440 x 900 max selectable since my internal monitor is at the resolution? Or will it allow me to change the desktop resolution to 1920 x 1080 in the control panel display.

I don't see how I can be anymore clear with this. When you click control panel than display you can set the desktop resolution to various things. My buddy at school tells me that since my internal screen is 1440 x 900 that is the max resolution that will be selectable in the display option in the control panel. So he is saying if i use the hdmi connector to an external monitor that does support 1920 x 1080 that option will not be selectable in the control panel since the internal monitor is 1440 x 900 and thats the max resolution that will be selectable in the control panel no matter what external monitor I use. Sounds wrong to me so I am trying to ask here.

I am sure you will be able to use the better resolution. On my computer, I have been able to run 1600x1200 on one monitor and on my wide screen run 1680x 1050 with no issues. As long as it detects the display it should allow you to run at that resolution as long as the video card itself can support it.
Same thing as if you hooked up to an external monitor on the notebook. As long as the video card can support it (the resolution), you should be ok.
not that i see this happening but worse case is you hook up the HDMI, and the notebook will not do both resolutions at the same time, then once you see it on your tv, disable the notebook one. That way it is only drawing at one resolution. -
So you are not 100% sure if it will work or not. Does anyone with actual experience using a notebook and outputting to an external monitor know?
-
What I know for sure is that the resolution of HDMI is outputs at 1920 x 1080. So as long as your external monitor is capable and adjusted (typically automatic) of receiving that, you should get true HD. -
I have indeed done that and it has worked on mine. used external monitors.. Forexample my resolution on my noteobook monitor was 1440x900 by my monitor on my desk was 1600x1200, i could use the 1600x1200 resolution on my desk monitor.
My buddy has left that has done HDMI at his home so I cant ask him as I personally have not done HDMI. I have done VGA and DVI and had both work ok -
i know i SHOULD get it. But I need a 100% definite for sure answer. If my internal monitor only supports 1440 x 900 desktop resolution when I hook up an external 1920 x 1080 monitor and then set the desktop resolution in the control panel will the 1920 x 1080 resolution be selectable in the control panel of windows or will iot still only show the 1440 x 900 as the max selectable resolution?
-
Display 1 and display 2, one of them will be the notebook and one will be the external device. Select the external one and you will be able to change the resolution to the supported level of that device.
Anyone else actually done HDMI? Does it work like any other external display? -
