Its only a 2GB stick - 2GB SODIMMs are fairly inexpensive these days. Those 4GB sticks are going to sit around 300-400+ USD.

So judging by the specs of this memory (speed etc), its the same exact stuff used in the M17x? So basically I can buy this and put it in (or have someone put it in) without voiding the warranty?

The M17x only has two memory slots. If you have 4GB in your system, you have both memory slots occupied (x2 2GB SODIMMs).

You'll have to buy a 4GB stick and pull one of the 2GB sticks to hit 6GB. You will not void your warranty - Dell won't cover an aftermarket SODIMM, but its not going to void your system warranty.

alienware.com website offers 8gb per stick for this laptop giving it a total of 16gb ( what is anyone really gonna use all that ram on i mean seriously?)

it might be cheaper to buy the 8gb then 2x 4gb?

Ha, only applications I can think of are VM, computer sciences (and only for high-intensity stuff), and large 3D Studio projects(In one project I already exhausted 4GB)....

there is a singular 8gb stick ram for a total of 16gb? I thought the M17x can only be configured up to 8gb ram
