I'm planning on buying the Alienware M11x and I want to make sure that it won't have a lot of problems when I use it. Please note that I've never had a laptop before and I've also never purchased anything online too.
I'm thinking of buying it online and customizing it but I see a couple things which I want to clarify:

    "Overclockable Intel® Core™2 Duo SU7300 1.3GHz (3MB Cache)"
I see that it says Duo so I'm guessing that it has 2 "1.3GHz" Core, so would that make it 2.6 GHz in total? If not then how much GHz does it have?

When I was selecting my external optical drive and noticed:
" System does not come with a DVD or CD Drive. The external drive below is needed to access DVD or CD media. Drive may be required for OS recovery."
So does it mean that I need to buy one of the options listed inorder to be able to put cds in the laptop?

"65 Watt 3 Prong AC Adapter with 3.28 ft Power Cord Product details [$60.00]"
So for the power adapters, I'm guessing that the cords for the laptop doesn't come with it for free, so would I need purchase one?

    Thanks :)

2 1.3ghz core means there's 2 different core, both individually clocked at 1.3GHz.

The notebook itself if you look at the pictures of it, has no DVD-rom built into it. You will need an external DVD-rom to be able to use any DVD. So yes, you'll need to buy an external drive, you can either order it from dell, or just buy it elsewhere. Such an offer isn't available for my region, so I can't exactly offer any advice in this regard. The same goes for the power adapter

    1. You need to be USB dvd rom. It can be from anywhere.
    2. You dont need to buy a powercord. Comes with it.
    3. the notebook is amazing. It is a little power house.
    4. The cpu is a 1.3 duocore that overclocks to 1.73.
    Hope you like it. StevenX

I see that m11x can play games such as Modern Warfare but then I noticed about the GHz required to play the game is 3.2 GHz. So I am wondering how you can play that game even though the over clock is only up to 1.73.

Those requirements were probably for a Pentium 4, and the Core architecture is far superior. Also keep in mind that it's a dual core, and that it's more like 3.46GHz assuming the game/application is multithreaded.

    COD4 will run fine.

Different technology. The one stated in the requirement is a good ol Intel Pentium 4 3.2ghz. Not a Intel Core 2 Duo series processor. In simple terms, newer technology tend to function better than the older technology.

Processor: Intel Pentium 4 3.2 GHz or AMD Athlon 64 3200+ processor or better supported

As above a core 2 duo is "or better"

Co-op/Multiplayer Hosting: To host Co-op or MP matches, a 2Ghz dual-core or better processor is recommended.

Though apparently you shouldnt Host MultiPlayer games playing them with a different host should be fine

Yes, I agree with Siris.. the laptop is NOT a server. It doesn't have enough processing power to host unless it does absolutely nothing else. BW, StevenX

I would also like to check if the M11x can handle starcraft 2 the spec requirement is:

    PC Minimum Requirements:
    • Windows XP SP3/Vista SP1/Windows 7
    • 2.2 Ghz Pentium IV or equivalent AMD Athlon processor
    • 1 GB system RAM/1.5 GB for Vista and Windows 7
    • 128 MB NVidia GeForce 6600 GT/ATI Radeon 9800 PRO video card
    • 1024x768 minimum display resolution
    • 4 GB free hard space (Beta)
    • Broadband connection

I know that the spec will change but it gives me a general idea what is needed to play. Thanks for all the help so far :)

I'm pretty sure that it should work though since its 2.2 ghz pentium

Coolkid - do a search on you tube for starcraft 2 beta and m11x. Notebook plays it fine.

    Best wishes, StevenX

The number of cores in a processor do NOT add up to one massive, super-fast processor. By that logic, my processor has an output of 8GHz.

If it worked like that, why do you think so many people still use dual core processors, instead of quad cores (or i7s)?

Basically, it does have two cores, each at 1.3GHz, yes. However, the way it works is that both cores can't work on the same 'thread'. If a program can split what it needs to process into threads (i.e. if a program supports a dual core processor), then yes, it'll utilise all of the processor. If it's a program that can only use one core (as with many older games) then no, it'll just use one core.

I hope that clarifies things a bit for you.

Yes. It means that the laptop does not have a built in CD/DVD drive.

You don't have to buy one of the USB CD/DVD drives that they offer; any USB CD/DVD drive should work. You should be able to buy one quite easily from many larger computer shops.

No, the laptop does have a power adaptor with it. That's just if you want to buy an additional power adaptor as a spare.
