I just join this forum a few days ago. A friend of mine told me about it. I currently own an aurora m9700(turion 2.4ghz, 1920x1200 res, 2gig ramm, dual 512mb 7900gs sli, 100gig hdd, DVD+RW DL, TV Tuner...), which I baught little under 1 1/2 years ago. Unluckily for me a few months later came the m9750 with dual core and support for 8series cards, but oh well thats life.
Anyhow here are my questions:
1) Alienware will give me an estimated $512 for my m9700 thru AlienExchange, is the amount worth it?
2) If I do trade in my m9700, do I place my order for the m15x, then send in my m9700 and then they send me a check i deposit it back into my bank account like a mail-in rebate?
3) If I do trade in my m9700, can I still get the student discount on the m15x?
4) Will the following build play games like Gear of War, World in Conflict, Rainbow 6 Vegas 2, BioShock on High with good frame rates?
Display: 1440x900 res
CPU: 2.1ghz
GPU: 8800M GTX
Memory: 1gig
HDD: 120gig 7,200rpm
OS: Vista Home Premium
I plan to upgrade the CPU/Memory/HDD myself in the future when I have the money, but atm college is taking up most of my money.

0) The M9750 doesn't have support for the good 8 series cards. The 7950GTX is the best you can do on that laptop.
1) You are getting a crappy amount of money for that setup. On ebay someone is selling a M9700 with a broken keyboard with worse specs than you have and he is already at $650 with 4 days left
http://cgi.ebay.com/ALIENWARE-AUROR...goryZ177QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
2) No idea I don't trust AW with handling money that carefully because they will most likely mess up.
3) Once again no idea but don't trade in your M9700.
4) You probably would need...
Display : 1440x900
CPU : 2.4Ghz
GPU : 8800GTX
Memory : 1GB (need to upgrade to 4GB yourself)
HDD : (You need more than 120 most likely)
OS : Fine
OR you can buy a clevo M860TU for... $1815 with...
Intel T9400 45nm "Montevina" Core™2 Duo 2.53GHz w/6MB L2 On-die cache - 1066MHz FSB 35 watt
512MB 9800GT ( = the 8800GTX)
2GB Ram (once again upgrade yourself)
160GB 5400RPM drive

unluckym9700,
When you use the trade-in program, we would send you a check or a gift card in your name which are the two options we offer and once we have received your system, it (credit) will be mailed out to you. You are eligible for the student program even when using the trade-in option. -

both laptops preform well and the benchmarks so far ive seen of both are pretty close, and yes looks is a factor when making my decision. Also I have delt with alienware tech and customer support about my m9700 and they were fast and helpful when compared to other companies support. Also I feel more comfortable with buying something from alienware, then I am from a site that has a website that looks like it was designed by a 15 yr old in highschool. Also to answer your question i have read the reviews on this site and all the countless pages on both laptops on this site and others. I only asked questions looking for constructed input not greiffing, so please keep it to yourself.

Hey, unlucky. You can probably get more for you m9700 if you go with ebay. But, trading it in to the AW service seems a safer route. It all depends on you really. Hope that you do get an m15x though. IT ROCKS!!

I agree. If your hinge survives, and I don't think any of us 1-2 month recent m15x owners have had it break yet (hoping it never does), the m15x is gooooood times.
As long as you're aware of the risks, go for it.
-
Them you should be direct and said: i don't liked the looks of the m860tu.
Also, people here tend to suggest the m860tu on good faith, not because of hate against AW or some kind of "grieving".
Not mentioning, if you aren't upgrading in a short term, you should go 2 GB ram, since Vista is kinda crappy with 1GB and 3 Years Warranty. -
in regards to the hinge, from all the discussion of it this forum is overflowing with i am well aware 15 of you owners have had the problem and are very unhappy about it. However with my m9700 from the second i opened the box I've always was over the top carefull and gental with it. I wont even have a sealed bottle of water or food anywere near it, so I'm not worried. I'll just continue to be anal-retentive about taking care of it. Also I don't understand what the difference is between "i don't like the looks of the m860tu" and "I don't like the design of the laptop especially the "wedge" shape and the brushed aluminum around the keyboard and mouse.". Was it confusing because I pointed out what i didn't like about it?

Guys he doesn't care what you think. All he wants to do is ask if he should get the M15x when he already knows the answer to it. He wants to spend more money to get less performance and reliability and shotty tech support (read my repair log) when he is already on a budget. Leave him alone

lol. funniness

-
Yea I don't know it's just incredibly hard to recommend them considering this is my 3rd time sending my M9750 back in a row with them now.
-
My advice is, if you like the build/size of the m9700, you should go for the Arima W840-DI, basically the same chassis as the m9700 (Arima W830-DA) and m9750 (W835-DI), I know darksmileysystems.com resells it at a pretty good price
-
Using "looks" is just to avoid further discussion. -
$10 hes gonna buy the laptop, the hinge MIGHT break, then he might pull a Sir Travis
(only older members are going to understand that)
But anyways let us know if you've purchased the laptop yet. -
-
if the hinge breaks i wont throw a huge fit and whine all over the forum and greif others about buying one and demand rediculas things like full refunds. i would pateintly deal with customer service and get the problem resolved. kthanxbye

can you wait until AW is integrated into dell, as you can get a dell accidental warranty and if you get a lemon again, "trip and fall" and get a new one...if they screw you over.
I always go for these warranties if I know the vendor has a bad rep and in the case of AW.. well they should be lucky they don't have such a warranty.. there would be a lot of ppl not paying the 15% restock fee -
-
lol. i miss the resident bonzi buddy super-fan.

To be honest, guys, this is the "alienware" forum. I don't understand pushing other laptop products and constantly bashing AW in this section. There are a lot of great products out there, yes. He was just asking some questions about it. I think his response pretty much mirrored how some of you just treated him.

Easy to say, hard to do.... only time will tell.
-
i wasnt attacking anyone i was responding to the people who are being insulting/rude instead of helpful and constructive
-
Them you should care how you write.
Basically your last post is saying: "all other users are big babies crying around".
And in reality most "crying, whining or grieving" comes from some one who felt mistreated be AW CS (at start of this issue AW wasn't willingly to cover it as part of warranty) or loose some important work duo a sudden creak on normally opening the laptop.
As it seems, you live in USA or EU, and doesn't take in account that on some countries you loose a whole month to see a repair done be AW. Can you figure a professional CAD designer without it´s notebook during 1 month? Or people that receive it "repaired" only to see it break in one week again?
I truly hope you get THE awesome m15x, but be aware that the chance of lemonade are high. -
In the end it's your money. -
i had to deal with problems from many different companies, alienware included. I ordered my aurora m9700 with vista and sli when they didnt have the drivers out and had to wait to get them. Also one of my 7900gs cards was defective and i had to send it back and they sent my a new one. So i had my share of problems/frustrations but I will say out of all the companies I've delt with when products have problems alienware has been the easiest and fastest in dealing with problems and the support people ive talked to have always been very understanding and polite. I also do sympathize with the people who had issues specialy with the hinge, it sucks to deal with but it happens. Maybe I just got lucky and delt with people on their good days and with people who gave a **** about their jobs.
