When did you buy it. Where did you buy it. Have you check control panel then System and post what chips you have. Then post them here

It sounds like you have the R1

yes you can, probably buying one off of ebay would be cheapest, upgrading with dell is a ripoff. sometimes.

Dude, you want the R2 and a Core i7 or you will be missing out. A core i7 is a quad core just like the Q9000 but much much faster. Totally different in architecture. The i7 is a native quad core design with all 4 cores on a single die. It also has no FSB aka front side bus to deal with. The core2 quads have their cores seperated by a HeatSink and have a front side bus to deal with. So a core i7 at a lower clock speed than a core2 quad is still most likely going to be faster and perform better overall.

A QX9300 Is decent upgrade path! And can compete with i7 processors. A Q9000 can be overclocked to a decent 2,5Ghz or something, so that's not a real problem when on a tight budget. And the C2Q CPU with ATI 4780 Xf will be enough BPH to play games with decent FPS for the next 2 years or so. :p
And he has the benefit of an integrated GPU...

As said, you can upgrade your Q9000 to QX9300 (if you can get it for a nice price). Don't regret your M17x R1, it's a great machine, no matter what others tell you. There will always appear better tech a later moment! ;)

i agree with optimus prime on this one, the r1 is a sweet lappy. the only thing you really need is the 2nd gpu and your set for a long time.

But overall performance wise the QX9300 cant really compete with the Core i7 can it? I know price wise but if price isnt an issue and you want the best performance, then Core i7 is the way to go I think.

returned my 1730 for a cash refund and bought a alienware m17x in december. it came with the t9600 processor. come to find out that dell can't do a cash refund and will give me a alienware replacement for my 1730. they will take back the original alienware and credit me back. the new one will have the i7 720qm but my question is, i've noticed different post referring to a r1 vs a r2 whats the difference and how can you tell?
is the r1 the alienware version and the r2 the dell version?

    They have the same chassis.

R1 has core 2 duo and core 2 quad processors with nvidia and ATI GPUs available.

R2 has core i5/i7 processors and only single/dual 4870 GPUs available. It also has an option for an RGB LED backlit screen.

People who have the RGB screen say it is markedly better. One person said it beat their MBP screen, which is a very high quality display.

You'll have to talk to your rep about upgrading it.
