    Well this is interesting....

I called Dell tech support for the hell of it to complain about my R1 and they told me I had 3 options.

    1) Wait for the fix. *cough* *cough*
    2) We'll replace the 260's with ATI cards.
    3) We can "cancel" your system. Which means I return it and they give me credit for an R2. (I already placed an order for an R2 on 1/25/10)

I took option number 2 because I've already replaced my q9000 with a qx9300. Plus, i have no idea where the original hard drive is. So I figured get the cards replaced and sell it on ebay.

After 20 minutes on hold the tech dood comes back and says. "You only have two options. Wait or return the laptop." He said "We're not sure replacing the cards with ATI's will fix the issue"

Should i even bother trying to get a q9000 (sold on ebay months ago) back in the laptop? Return it without the hard drive and take a bit of a credit loss?

    Oh what to do :)

I would send it back for a refund... You will take a big hit on Ebay.
If you still have the q9000 put that back in and then return it.. If the HD is an issue, just get a cheap replacement from newegg and throw in there.. I dont know what you had originally.

I'm now waiting on hold to speak with my 3rd tech support person. The first two didn't bother to give me a reference number so I couuld actually return it.

I'm not sending back till my R2 gets here anyways.. I need something to work on!

The funny thing is that I bought this as a display model from microcenter for $1800. I wonder how much credit i'm going to get.

    Matt-Heml ,

You have to send the unit back the way it was sent to you. So having a hard drive back in there will expedite your return.

How'd this work out? Might be in a similar boat as you. But even worse my purchase from MicroCenter was an open box.

I might get flamed for this but I would just return it CPU and HDDless, I returned my first M17x and got a replacement but I 'misplaced' my hard drive and set it back without it. I was expecting to get a call demanding payment for the drive but I never did...I suppose you could do the same with the CPU...
