So i just got off the phone with dell to get my RGB LED screen replaced due to multiple dead pixels. Is this a common issue with the RGB LED screens? I have had multiple standard LCD's and have never had any dead pixel issues, this screen came with 7 plus one cluster of what appears to be 3.

All 4 of my recent RGB LED's have had dead pixels. I don't know if it's a bad batch or what. I've also got an RGB LED replacement coming.

Edit: Replacement just got here. No dead pixels but a couple tiny pieces of dirt behind the E2E. They're barely visible so I'm going to keep it instead of dealing with obvious dead pixels.

I had only a single "stuck" pixel. It was dark, then switched to white and finally was revived. No more problems so far.

LED's MTBF is longer than that of an LCD's, so no, it's not supposed to be common.

Just to avoid confusion: These are all LCD panels. The backlighting is just RGB LED vs CCFL of past.

How can I do a precise check on my M17x display for dead/stuck pixels? I did a quick check, when I first received it about 2 weeks ago. But I want to thoroughly check it out now.

Download dead pixel buddy and cycle through the solid colors. Get up close to the panel to check. My new panel is in and I'm finally done with this panel lottery. Btw make sure to remove the webcam because the replacement panel doesn't come with one.

@lozz: I blame companies like samsung for marketing their led backlit LCDs as LED for contributing to the confusion. It's a dirty marketing ploy and just another reason I hate Samsung.

How does this replacing of the lcd work? They send you the lcd assembly and you do what with the old one? Also do they send a tech to check it out first?

Since my system was within the 21 day return window, I convinced AW tech support to send me the LCD assembly and let me do the job. She asked her supervisor and they said as long as I was willing to accept any damages that incurred as a result, they'd send it. I agreed and it got here this morning. They send you the front E2E portion with the LCD attached. There is no lid cover or webcam, you have to swap your originals in. The NBD service is awesome though, I talked to them yesterday at 3 PM PST and I thought there was no way it would be here by today but it was.

Word, that's why I got the premium care. Shipping charges alone will repay me.
I bet that little NBD LCD service cost dell at least $30-70

Dead pixel buddy was a bit hard to find a working download link for so I'm dropping it here. It's a very small zip file and very easy to use.

I have 3 dead pixels. But I'm not going to ask for replacement. I don't trust the service personnel to do a good job. Anyway the pixels are not really noticeable unless i look for them earnestly.

I am kinda worried about it, i am the kind of person which read some problem about a thing and unfortunately i got the same, which mean than maybe i will have some dead pixels when i get my machine, so, the question is simple, does dead pixels keep growing up ? or if i found one or three i will just get thos 1 o 3 for the entire life of the screen ?, should i worried too much about it if they are barely noticeable ?
    Thanks

Most of the time stuck or dead pixels are there right out of the box and rarely will more appear overtime so i would not worry about that....

If you have dead or stuck pixels and you barely notice them then that is great.... Me if i have a stuck pixel it makes me crazy but the dead ones (just little black spots) i can live with because you cant really ever see them...

Yep dead pixels are much easier to live with than stuck pixels. My last screen had a stuck blue pixel and it was driving me nuts because I could spot it 10 feet away while watching a movie. This new LCD has some flaws too, the edge 2 edge panel has a dirt smudge on the inside and there's no way to wipe it off. Fortunately it only shows up if I shine a light on the LCD while it's off or a solid black color is displayed so who cares about that. No dead or stuck pixels at least..I wish I had my old R2 that I sold s0ysauce, that thing was perfect in every way.

My M17x that I sold to my GF was perfect. No dead or stuck pixels, no dirt or smudges under the screen, and I just installed the 10.6 drivers for her without a problem. I decided to buy a desktop and hold out for a couple years on a gaming laptop.

My next laptop will be an affordable mid-range one for now.

Sucks to hear about all these panels with dead/stuck pixels though. Definitely must be a bad batch going around.

I haven't got any dead or stuck pixels on my R2. It would be good if Alienware tested for them before they shipped though.

Well the Dell phone techs struck again. Just got my new LCD installed and the new one had a couple of dead pixels. The tech got on the phone and called Dell, who then proceeded to tell him to try removing a stick of RAM and see if that fixed it!?!?!? After that of course has 0 effect they then wanted me to send my system in for DEPOT level repair. I asked for the techs phone and told them they were not going to repair dead pixels at depot level. They then wanted to do a system exchange but i would be getting a refurb instead of a new system. Of course i told them no to that also i said they could either send a new screen or they would have to send a new laptop (no refurb). Me and the tech who installed the screen got a good laugh while he got the replacement screen authorized. I love the people dell pays to provide "support".

That's because you can't upgrade your desktop anymore and it becomes too boring sitting and waiting for a new tech. ;)
I always try to reserve some room for upgrades. Currently, adding extra RAM, better CPU, bigger HDD to my 7 yrs old IBM ThinkPad. Believe it or not, but the dinosaur boots in ~15sec with the latest Ubuntu (10.04).

I had 6 on mine... dell tried to arrange tech replacement but the tech was shipped the wrong panel so they just issued a replacement system. New one doesnt have any dead pixels.

It's just a shame how many crappy screen i've seen in here. You'd think a top of the line like super top of the line laptop screen would have cleaner more sterile conditions to not allow dirt to get inside before the panels are sealed together and you would think quality control would be inspecting these panels for dead pixels. They should be held to a higher standard then normal screen which I know they allow a few dead pixels but for these high + professional quality RGB LED screens there should be strict quality control in place to be certain these screen are top notch for every 1

well new one is in and i only spotted 1 dead pixel, at this point im not gonna push for another. I only even see it when i run a pixel tester so its good enough. The tech that came today didn't have a clue what he was doing though so i talked him through each step of the dis-assembly and reassembly.
