Is it possible to install DDR2 ram into M17 and work as normal?
In case you ask me why:
Read this: http://ixbtlabs.com/articles3/cpu/ddr2-800-vs-ddr3-1333.html
and then this: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=22540&vpn=VS2GSDS667D2&manufacture=CORSAIR&promoid=1029

no. and no. get a nice 4gb kit from newegg for about 150 dollars. or pork out another 100 to aw so u don`t have to go through the hassle, rmas *possible* warranty voids ect.
-
150 > 2 x 37.
-
um idg what you said there m8
-
actually, sorry.
2 x 29 = 58 for 4 gb ddr2 ram, and that's in CAD, local.
If the performance is less than 1% in games, then why need to spend extra 100 to get from newegg? -
why would you force downgrade from the DDR3 to the DDR2 platform?
thats akin to saying you want pleather seats even though it comes with leather ones. -
Did you go to the link? -
DDR3 and DDR2 use different slot's i belive DDR2 is 200pin and DDR3 is 204 pin.
There is also a notch along the pins, this notch will be in a different place for DDR/DDR2/DDR3 memory.
So no. DDR3 will only work in DDR3. No DDR2 for the M17. -
then your second link goes to a 667 module, not 800. kinda hard to justify a comparison after the article when you look at 667 memory vice 800.
all in all - you can upgrade the AW proc in the furture to take advantage of the DDR3 memory.
yes, several have been proponants (for) of the DDR2 since it it near the capapbilities of the DDR3 for less the cost, but if you decide in the future to upgrade, you would then need to upgrade memory and cpu...thus more cost involved.
if you were asking if you could mix the DDR2 and the DDR3 to fill all the slots, the answer would be from me...no...it may work, but then your DDR3 would be degraded to DDR2 specs. (if that could even work, which i doubt)
so - in short, if you want to save some cash, get the 800 DDR2 not the 667 DDR2 and fill all the slots. the other question is wether the Mobo in this unit can handle either memory. you may be stuck with use of DDR3 only if the Mobo can only use DDR3.
and personally, id rather have two leather seats that will last then 4 pleather that need to be upgraded in the future. this way all you need to do is then get two other leather seats (when the price is cheaper even) and you have a set of four.

ddr3 affects data transfer rate fyi. not so much gaming but still it does boost performance.
