I just dished out 2600.00 for a laptop. I was wondering , was there a point in getting 4GB of Ram when going to be running on Windows Vista 32bit?
Does the Ram help anything else besides windows?
-
-
you can use 3.2 gigs of that ram. and i would rather put 2 sticks of the same ram than put a 1 gig stick and a 2 gig stick. yes ram will help you when you want to multi task.
-
Even though a 32-bit can only utilize up to 4GB of RAM, having two x 2GB sticks allows it to run in dual-channel (which is said to be more stable and more faster than a single channel). If your computer does not have more than 512MB in video memory, you can probably utilize 3GB of that RAM, which is obviously faster than having 1GB (512MB x 2) or 2GB (1GB x 2) of RAM, or better than a single channel 1GB + 2GB stick of RAM combined.
-
I agree with exiled. Best to have two of the same Memory chips then 2 differnt Memory chips.
-
forgot to mention.. how my laptop
2.4ghz ---4gb ram-- 400gb harddrive --512mb nvideo 8700 and Lightscribe i had to pay 2600 .. why do they charge tax if it ships from miami and im in NY -
You couldve saved a few by adding in your own ram.
-
whats the m16x
-
can I see a picture on your m16x
-
I choose 1GB (2x512mb) from AW + bought 4gb Crucial running @ 800mhz for $93. The very same day I ordered it from newegg, I put my 2x512 for auction over ebay and sold them for $50
So my 4gb cost me only approx $50 and is much better quality than offered by AW.. can you believe it they sent me Qimonda Ram... they are getting cheap on parts and still charge us same money? huh!!!
BTW.. if it's m15x and you want to use your full RAM go for Vista x64. See my signature for HOWTO do that
-
im waiting for the m12x, dam
lol -

Alienware is so bad on the RAM option. They really need to take a second look at that.
-
^^ LOL no they dont; not if people keep buying it.

Fooled by the title of this thread...

ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED...
I finally saved up money for an M15x, its currently being built and I believe its in phase 6 with estimated shipping date Aug 26/27. My problem is I spent $2600.00 for
Regular 720p ,2.4ghz, nvidia 512mb 8700, 4gb Ram, 400gb harddrive 5400rpm, windows vista
im thinking since its in phase 6 of building it might be too late to make changes to it so please give me your honest opinion... Should I just downgrade to 1GBRAM, and upgrade the video card to Nvidia 512mb 8800? and I can get 4GB ram at a computer store for like $100.00? Or should I just leave it alone because it will still be a fine computer...? Also do you think its too late and what would Alienware say?
Thanks for the help -
P.S. Forgot to mention if I do actually go through with changing it , it would be the 2nd time since I placed the order
-
If it aint too late shakenbake, I would.
8800 GTXM 512 rocks in my opinion. And what with the saving on the memory and doing an upgrade yourself at a later date. With the money you save, sounds like the best way to go..
Good luck man. -
but is it ever too late with Alienware? Is it possible they tell me they cant do it? I know for a fact that if I go with the 1GB RAM and 512MB 8800 then it will be exact same price...
What about the RAM is there a special type I have to buy? Can I install it myself? Will it perform as good as the ones that Alienware put in? -
Don't worry about it. Just call ASAP. It's very worth it, and if you happen to save enough you might want to consider the T9300. I forget the price difference, if it's too big of agap between the 2.4-2.5 don't get it but the T9300 is the best deal there, I believe. Of course the 8800M GTX is a must have, but not really that essential if you don't game or do preformance stressing things.
-
Are they open Saturday? Is there any RAM does someone can suggest to me , and is it possible that I can put it in myself?
-
I changed my order before but now that the ordering process is in stage 6 im afraid it might be too late for me to change my order. Does anyone know if Alienware changed orders more then one time and if it is ever too late?
-
Very possible. The process is as easy as unscrewing the bottom and inserting the RAM. Check this thread for the kinds of RAM compatible with m15x.

I'm not sure you needed another thread for this, but if it's for the RAM, it's worth trying at any point.
-
sorry about the extra thread wont happen again, just a bit nervous. Im just trying to find out if its possible that they will say NO?
-
It shouldn't be a big deal. Even if they say no, they wouldn't cancel your order over it so might as well try.
-
Thank you so much for your help!
-
No problem. I actually didn't feel that helpful so I looked up the hours that their sales team is available and it says Monday-Friday 9AM - 9PM EST and Saturday 10AM - 6PM EST. So, yeah they should be available Saturdays.
-
i cant believe im saying this......
but get the clevo m860tu -
im sorry to say they will cancel the order and re start it. if it is already in production then that means everything has been pulled for your order and checked. stage 6 or phase 6 means it has already been built and has left the production line and is now in the first phase of testing.
the only way of knowing is to ring them up.
it depends where you ordered it from as if it was the uk site it is a bank holiday on monday (not sure if it is in ireland or not but you need to check) if it is then you need to RING NOW otherwise you wont be able to speak to anyone until tuesday. secondly it depends what you want to change from your order. if its ram then you can do this yourself without interupting the completion of your laptop.
could you also put your ordered specification in your signature so we all know what you orderd.
good luck -

so for people to post stupid and non-contructive comments limited to 'buy a clevo' is nothing but a reflection of the limited ability to actually respond in kind to the topic of the post. -
what he said
-
Actually, whizzo, when did you get your m15x and how is it now?
-
june 2nd i believe. it's in perfect working order.
-
... yeah. that. -
the worst they can say is no....but then if you present the issue(s) in a nice and professional attitude, thy may offer to take them off the order.
i mean in all reality, how hard would it be to unscrew the bottm, remove and replace memory modules, then ship it out with the 1G in place of 4G.
not hard, just a question if they would, dependant on the location of the unit. -
How about you Mystik? Date and current condition?
I think those of us that have m15x in good to perfect condition need to let it be known. -

To make a long story short, I ordered the M15x I made one change to the order 2 days ago and now its currently in Phase 6... I decided I wanted to make 1 last final change by adding the 8800 Nvidia instead of the 8700 I originally thought about... Taking out the 4gb of Ram and adding 1 ( this way I can put my own in later , I only figured that out about a day ago)
I called today and the lady on the phone told me the order status/ changing department is closed and that I have to call on Monday. I asked if I would be able to change my order on Monday and she said I would.
Im afraid she is just trying to get me off the phone , im really really nervous right now that they will say No its too late when I call on Monday. Please let me know what you think will happen? -
I think I might need to go clean the fins on my heatsinks though... had a bit of a problem while playing mass effect recently.
only other recent problem: digital mic disappeared. reinstalled sound drivers, and it's back.
LOVE my M15X! in about a month, I'll be upgrading to 64-bit Vista Business with a side-order of Ubuntu 8.04 -
well, any changes now will just make your whole process start over. so if you're worried it'll be too late on monday and they'll ship you the 8700m-gt etc., you could just cancel your order via phone IMMEDIATELY and place a new order with the 8800m-gtx and 1Gb RAM.
-
if you call in and change your order, you'll likely be kicked back a few phases, and your delivery will definitely be delayed.
I don't think they'll have a problem making the changes though. I don't think they ever do. they're in the market to make customers happy right?
anyways, Stick to your guns, if you want it a certain way, be forceful, but not offensive. if they can't do the change for you, ask to speak to someone who can.
Have all your vital information (order #, etc) on-hand as well as a method of payment nearby (ccard, etc)... you wouldn't want to have to make 3-4 calls for one small change.
frankly, the 8700M GT (I know, I have it) is a very decent card... comparing it to the 8800 is like comparing jet fighters... the newer ones are faster, etc, but the older ones are still JET FREAKIN FIGHTERS!
FYI, I plan on upgrading my 8700M GT in about 8 months to the 8800M GT, to try and crank all the potential out of my laptop and keep it going for as long as possible. so the "stick with it and upgrade later" option is present. -
I'd ask for it in writing somewhere, even just an email from her as proof.
-
My friend told me that I shouldnt have a problem because that lady did say I would be able to change it and I can use that agaisnt them... I can also threaten to cancel my order .... I dont mind waiting an extra week for the change but I just hope they will do it for me without any problems... Any last thoughts?
Rate my M16X please!
