I have a really odd noise occuring in my laptop, it's not grinding or otherwise but is literally a beep. It's not a standard beep or anything so I can't deduce what it is.

I've included a link to my server where you can download the audio recording.

Laptop is m17x and is happening the left hand side of the laptop below my 280M and the WLAN card.

Ah, lame. The fan bearing really?

It almost sounds more like a digitaly produced sound...

Think it's safe to remove the top of the laptop while it's running to get an idea?

Well, that would be my guess. I've heard that chirping sound from a few fans. As to opening it... Me personaly, i would do it. I pretty much know what i'm doing. It all comes down to how comfortable you are with it. :)

Alright i'll take it apart. I'm a software engineer anyways I should know this stuff by heart!

But yeah, I've also seen it taken apart completely by a technician twice to replace the motherboard so I should be okay.

I'll let you know if it was the bearing later :p

    Thanks!

Pssh, software, hardware all the same! /sarcasm

Nah, I've taken hardware classes in University so I'm pretty adept at working with it.

You sure it's not software generated?
Like turn off the sound volume, or disable the sound card?

My HD gave me the beeps before because it's a seagate 7200.4. HDPARM stopped that, and I fixed it with dell flash later.
