ah. well, this is a hotly-discussed topic. AW says the m15x doesn't need any extra cooling. users say that in general, zalman coolers are the best. however, it seems that the m15x cooling system relies on conduction and the angle of the zalman coolers screws with this so temps actually go up. markus.kainer has apparently modded some top-secret cooler from the states, i've heard with nice results. all in all, no one really knows which cooler is good, or if they're of any use at all.

I have the Targus Chillmat, though it works, it's vastly undersized for the m15x. the pads on the top barely touch the feet on the computer...

it's deep enough, just not long enough side-to-side... so you can kinda take that as a point of reference.

I have a fan that i built at work just for kicks and it's supposed to be running for a server but i just smack it in a corner of my computer where there are fan vents and i just let it run for about 5 minutes and my computer currently which is an Asus idles around 37 degrees celisius Lol CPU wise. But the sound is really loud like a vacuum cleaner in my room. It actualyl really helps me cool my computer down. I suggest building some sort of insane fast speed fan. It should be pretty easy just requires some sawtering or how ever you spell it and you shut down you computer and smack it into an air vent and let the air blow through for about 5 -10 minutes and your CPU + GPU + HD should be cooled to i'd say roughly less than 35 degrees celsius.

mate, we're discussing laptop cooling solutions. "sawtering" in some "insane fast" server fan really would ruin the aesthetics of the m15x...

I'm not saying that you put it inside.. im just saying you put it outside where the airvent is and use it when you need to cool your laptop. It's only 5 minutes it's not like thats going to be the rest of your life infront of a computer...

eh... I have a zalman nc-2000 and to be honest, not that much of a difference. I noticed that all of the cool air that the zalman provides go towards the front of the laptop... where the cpu and gpu are at the back. However it does cool the cpu down by ~4C. As for the gpu it does nothing since the m15x fan kicks in only when the card hits 88C...

Is it absolutely necessary for a cooler? I was just debating on using my m15x without a cooler.

not really. if youv'e got your notebook on your lap, you can't game properly, so you can just as well set it to internal graphics, which runs much cooler, so you can actually have it on your lap.

An Alienware-something (a AW forum rep) stated that the M15x was conceived to be used WITHOUT a cooler on a completely FLAT surface without any block to air circulation.

More, as someone already said, several people did very through tests with several coolers (when the M15x came out) and none find any significant difference when using coolers.

If the M15X is like the M17X The fans are not at the bottem like most Laptops. They are at the top of the laptop. I can see the Fan Blades on the top vents when the laptop off. Then when the laptop on the airflow going downword. Then heat exit from the rear. Take your hand over the vents on the top you feel air blowing downword one one side I would guess on the right hand side on the M15x.

Most of the time laptops draw air from the bottem and then out from the rear. Which leaves alot of heat going up. My M17X the keyboard not Hot.

This could be why you dont need a laptop cooler or they do not work on this type of laptop When air drawn from the top not the bottem.

well if you planning on a cooler you should cross the Zalman NC1000 off your list. I have it and it doesnt change any of the temperatures whatsoever. Only thing i use the Zalman for now is to angle the keyboard when i have to type a really long paper.

yes the m15x spits out hot air from the back. the right side is alot warmer compared to the left side since the gpu is on the right side.

even on internal graphics it gets insanely hot on my lap. thats how my m15x has been for the past week because of the graphics card being "defected" .

Another factor to consider is your room temperature. Your system is more susceptible to overheating in stuffy/warm rooms. As milcs mentioned though, the system is built for sufficient cooling without the need for an external cooler.

they should rename the m15x to minidesktop, as it is def. not meant for your lap. unless you want to fry your legs. lol

the m15x can be used on the lap with integrated gfx on. it doesnt get that hot with integrated gfx. with dedicated it cook your leg. the exhaust also makes a nice hand dryer.

SO you are saying that with the m17x, it suck cool air in at the top, then blows it across and out of the inner components?

If this is correct then no notebook cooler will help as it would have to blow cool air in at the top?

Perhaps that's why Aw suggested we don't need a cooler?

Only time I would be using it on my lap would be watching my brother play madden. (I watch his strategies and use it against him! Bwahaha) I might just save money for a 4gb ram upgrade. 2 more days than its here :D
