    Hi fellow NBR-AW users
if someone hasn't updated the recon3di in their R4 and above, i would suggest doing this now. After the MS update my sound card has become way more stable and haven't had the infamous disappearing sound card issue to date

And this update is available to both win7 and 8

I don't think I had any issues before the update, but I haven't had any issues after either, so so far so good!

I installed them and on the next restart the sound device was not detected. So I uninstalled them and planned on going back to generic Windows drivers but Windows automatically reinstalled these. After 2 restarts it has been ok, hopefully it stays that way.

I have had better reliability using native Windows drivers than I have Creative Recon3Di drivers. I'm trying these new drivers and so far, so good. The drivers that are native to Windows 7 and 8.X rarely ever have the issue with the sound device not detected and having to put the machine to sleep and awaken it to revive the audio chip.

Thankfully my M18x R2 has a perfect board. This was such a stupid issue, couldn't believe Dell never properly addressed it.

I'm getting the no audio device error again :( Today my storage drive wasn't detected as well. Took 3 restarts for the laptop to find the ssd again.

These drivers are really working well, not a single hiccup to date.

I am glad that I am not experiencing the
Absent sound when I unplugging the headphones while windows is active
The infamous recon3di missing card trick on windows reboot

Looks like everyone has some sort of nightmare experience with Alienware... BUY CLEVO next time! (Or Eurocom, which is Clevo...discounts available.)

I had the sound issues you guys are speaking of, with my M18X-R2 for a long time, but a motherboard replacement, fixed it for good. So, its a motherboard issue.

Every time someone reports an error do we have to run all over every thread saying buy a clevo? I still love my 18x r2's. They play all my games fine. If someone has an issue how about being a little more productive and help instead of oh just buy a clevo.....

So far, still no issues here either. I was running the native Windows Audio driver before I installed this and do not have the Creative software installed. I am on my third M18xR2 motherboard and all three have had this issue. It has never been more than a minor inconvenience, but it's always nice to not have to deal with an inconvenience if you don't have to. Putting the machine to sleep and waking it up again has always worked for me to bring back the audio. Since the "feature" of sleep mode was invented to the present, waking up my M18xR2 audio chip is the only value or useful purpose I have ever found in that, LOL.

@pathfindercod - M18xR2 is still the best laptop ever built in the history of computers as far as I am concerned. I love mine, too. Other than the shenanigans NVIDIA is pulling that make me frustrated, I have had no regrets with this amazing product. I love my M18xR1 also. I am starting to become very concerned about service parts availability and Dell/Alienware abandoning us. They also never stepped up to the plate and took ownership of this widespread audio chipset defect. They should have done a revision to the motherboards for the affected machines and gone back to the IDT/RealTek audio chip and replaced them all under a product recall... and, then to recover their costs, sued Creative for selling them a defective chipset.

Glad this driver has helped you guy out and made the issue less noticeable. I have owned a lot of laptops in from high school up and through finishing college now, and the M18x is by far my favorite. Nothing beats pulling it out in the library and having at least one person come ask me what it was. That being said, I also love my X220 and it has been invaluable, but its not as cool as the M18x :D

For those that haven't tried and don't know it already, you must access Micro$oft Update Catalog using Internet Explorer.

Here is a link to the Recon3Di drivers: http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Search.aspx?q=Recon3DI

To use them you must extract the downloaded CAB files to a new folder using a program such as WinZip, 7-Zip or WinRAR. I installed them through Device Manager by using the "have disk" method and pointing Device Manager to the folder the drivers were extracted to.

Note that there are new drivers available now (which were not there 2 weeks ago) for Windows 7, 8 and 10 (version 6.0.101.1042) and I have not tested them.
