It looks alright. Personally, I'd stick with the black or silver if I was ordering. The red color chassis will probably launch by the end of July, following Dell's tendency to release new colors after a system has launch.

thats alright. I am getting mine custom airbrushed with blue to purple to gold color shifting paint for 200. So new colors wouldn't matter to me tho.
-
They're aluminum...why would you muck them up with paint.
Lrn2Anodize! -
For people like me who don't know what anodizing is:
"Anodizing, or anodising, is an electrolytic passivation process used to increase the thickness of the natural oxide layer on the surface of metal parts. Anodizing increases corrosion resistance and wear resistance, and provides better adhesion for paint primers and glues than bare metal. Anodic films can also be used for a number of cosmetic effects, either with thick porous coatings that can absorb dyes or with thin transparent coatings that add interference effects to reflected light. Anodizing is also used to prevent galling of threaded components and to make dielectric films for electrolytic capacitors. Anodic films are most commonly applied to protect aluminium alloys, although processes also exist for titanium, zinc, magnesium, and niobium. This process is not a useful treatment for iron or carbon steel because these metals exfoliate when oxidized; i.e. the iron oxide (also known as rust) flakes off, constantly exposing the underlying metal to corrosion. "Stay-Brite" is sometimes used as a market name for products made from anodised aluminium such as brass replica." -
The red version is probably going to be exclusive to ATi 4780XF systems, it is ATi's colors.

because color shifting paint is awesome. I love to blue to purple to gold. Lots of eyecandy. You like your bare metal look i like pretty shifting colors. I don't believe it is mucking it up.

Guess we will see. She says she has done some beautiful paint jobs on the material before so we will see. I love color shifting paint so my mind is already made up.
-
I absolutely love color shifting paint, just not on the already clean, industrial look of the M17x
-
did not an antendee of the E3 state there was no talk of the red unit?
that they had scrapped the red at this time and no talk of bringing it to fruition? -
The other benefit of aluminum finishes...etching.
OMGLAZERZPEWPEW!!! -

If I were alienware I would totally do this in red for ATI cyborg green for nvidia and blue for the hell of it
also like the m15x with its owner's name plate on the bottom they should offer custom engraving like apple does on ipods...
color shifting paint kicks ! -
red ain't happening, sneaky's sources say they dropped the color.
-
or for those that love the raw aluminum color or a actual polished chrome like finish without anodize use a small bit of red devil lye and water it strips the anodize right off and leave the aluminum and does not damage it... mmmmmmmmmm polished aluminum

Wow, that red is awful. Dell's influence here may drive me to another brand if they keep up stuff like this. I miss the nice shiny paint jobs of the older models. These newer finishes are probably cheaper to produce.

Get a clue -
I linked K|N because it was the first site that came to mind that I knew had images of laser etched laptops. -

I'll have a lot more pictures for you guys next time I'm on my MacBook Pro.
-
I would be very careful if you're going to attempt to paint this laptop. After certifiying on this model and seeing how it comes appart, it might be more difficult than you think. Also, I would strongly recommend leaving the original colors, as the materials may not hold up well to painting.
